Gunboat to introduce new players to site
I introduced several friends to Webdiplomacy, through a full-press game. Several players (five!) indicated they want to play another gunboat game on the side to get the hang of the site. They're reasonably experienced, so we're looking for two reasonable other players to give some staunch opposition.
Who feels like a game?!

Thoughts of Americans about opinions of "foreigners"about Americans?
So, Americans, what do you think of our opinions of you? What do you think we think about you? I'm curious, because I hear rather often how we are all blaming America blablabla while I know no one who actually does that.

Thank you, abge, for your years of service to webdip
Abgemacht has been around for almost as long as the site, and he has been such a positive force for the site as a player and a mod/admin. His request to retire has been finally accepted :).
Please join me in thanking abge for his years of service.

I am about to graduate...
Hello WebDip community.
I am about to graduate high school (2 weeks after tomorrow) and I was wondering if anybody here has any general tips or experiences they can share with me and/or anybody who is graduating. I believe many of you on this site have gone through college or high school already, and was just wondering if anybody could ease my nerves about my future.
I am going to be attending University of River Falls - Wisconsin in the USA; I plan on becoming a teacher.

Gay Magical Elves...

BRAVO to Bret Easton Ellis for saying all the truth a straight white man could never utter. Fuck gay political correctness. I tired of having to pay homage to every bung-plunger that feels the need to reveal his bedroom habits to me!

Men's Clothing
I just got my first real job last week and now I'm in a bit of a tight spot. My wardrobe needs to be updated to be semi-professional and done (mostly) on the kind-of cheap. My work environment is not overly formal (no tie or suit) but I still want to look good and purchase good quality and good fitting clothing and would like some recommendations.

I Have Been, And Always Shall Be, Your Shakespeare & Star Trek Nerd: Trek 12/2?
Is he dead, Jim, or zipping along at Warp 9...thoughts?
What's everyone think about this latest adventure? (Come on out, you fellow Trekkies and casual viewers alike...though those of you that hated the Abrams reset--I thought it was good overall, rough in patches--well...if you didn't like Star Trek 2009, oh, are you going to hate this one...it really IS Star Trek 12/2, down to the very lines...but does it work?)

Using the vote button in gunboat
Can someone please clarify what the new rules are about using the vote buttons in gunboat? Back in the day communication using these buttons was accepted (eg. "Cancel" = let's stop fighting, "Draw" = let's take out the big guy, "Pause" = Somebody help me, etc.). I know there was some tl;dr about it in the Gunboat Tournament thread but if any mods/admins can clear it up here i'd appreciate it.

Want 250 free points?
Replacement Italy needed for end-game stalemate line: gameID=115863
Buy-in is 44 D, a position in the draw will net you at least 250 D in return. All you have to do is play nice with Russia and France against Germany and Turkey.
jmbostwick (2308 D)
17 May 13 UTC
Game is in Spring, 1909, and Italy is in a vital position in the stalemate line, but will have to be an active participant in order to ensure survival.
hecks (164 D)

If that's all it takes, why did Italy CD? I'm very intrigued, and very suspicious.

jmbo - You are commenting on a live game. You ahve gone beyond simply trying to invite a player, but instead are discussing strategy in an ongoing anon game.

I demand nothing be done immediately.....
jmbostwick (2308 D)
17 May 13 UTC
Hm... As I see it, krellin, nothing I discussed is "privileged" information, since it can all be readily gained from reading the Global Chat. Being an "active participant" is vague enough that I haven't encouraged any particular strategy, as is the description of the position as "vital". I've proffered no analysis of possible moves, discussed no privileged information regarding the diplomatic state of the board, and made no suggestion or encouragement towards possible action. If the mods disagree, I will of course repost the thread without the offending statements, whatever those are deemed to be.

Hecks -- I won't care to speculate on why someone would take over a country in Spring 08 and then leave again in Spring 09. To me, it seems a particularly foolish move, but then it's often difficult to judge the strength of position when you've only got one SC.
2ndWhiteLine (2596 D(B))
17 May 13 UTC
jbm, unless you're in the game, you can't read global chat. Also, it is only OK to discuss an ongoing game if it is non anon and full press, meaning that there are no barriers to communication.
jmbostwick (2308 D)
17 May 13 UTC
...oh. My msitake, 2WL -- it's obvious in retrospect, but I forgot completely that chat can't be read unless you're part of the game. Someone did join, though, so please feel free do disregard this thread.
Yonni (136 D(S))

2WL, you can read global chat in a game you're not in by clicking on messages at the bottom of the screen.

I suggest nothing be done impetuously anytime soon . . .
krellin (80 DX)
17 May 13 UTC
jmbo - I honestly don't care about discussing the game, but didn't want you to get in trouble should it evolve further. The point, though, is that by soliciting for a new player, who's first introduction to the game will be "Hey...all you ahve to do is come in the the game and do 'X' and you'll quadrupal your investment"...is a little less than an innocent call for a player.

You are using the thread to try to persuade the outcome of an on-going game
Timur (673 D(B))
17 May 13 UTC
@Yonni: That sounds so intrusive. Thanks for the info anyway.
jmbostwick (2308 D)
17 May 13 UTC
Yonni -- even better, thank you for the information!

krellin -- That's fair, it's definitely not a straight-up "Player needed for X" post, so I can see that I might be pushing the edge of the rules too far. On the other hand, people often post "Player needed, Strong Austria position!" without mod involvement, so clearly one is allowed to use -some- level of showmanship when advertising for replacements. I concede, though, that my call may have indeed crossed the line from showmanship to a rules violation, and if so I submit myself to appropriate punishment from the mods.

All is well. They have a 'Spartacus'. Well may he fare. All my best wishes are with him. The catacombs are probably a good place to reside; saves moving far on demise.

And jmb, note that none of the rest of us investment-quadrupling junkies jumped at the offer, tempting as it was. Try to keep the guy alive, please. Personal plea.

No, I have no connection with him/her whatsoever, but, depending on his experience and standing, he may have simply been drawn in due to the promise of riches beyond his previous imaginings. I was actually tempted by your post till I saw the situation. No comment on that. I have no right to comment. I just proffer skewed opinions. Everyone ignore me, but keep whoever this f*cker is safe.

OP understandable. Frustration can do that. 'Let's move this game along.' Rarely leads to a positive result. Hope you find a successful and amicable resolution.
(Sounds like a press release to N*rth K*rea :~) Since those rarely work, good luck.

Signing out, off and into a rehab centre somewhere near nowhere anyone might have possibly known me. Only a few places qualify.
One has a large, green neon D on the roof. Full of weirdos, but they seem sussed, intelligent and, actually, quite cool, in their way.
The other is Findhorn, in the Highlands of Scotland. Doesn't have a large green F on the roof, but it's a thought. (Google, if interested. Worth exploring.)
Another, Bogancloch, in the middle of Clashindarroch Forest. B, not yet.
Yet another, not to be explored as of now . . .

Timur, you seriously need to lay off the drugs. It's starting to show through.

I did notice that no one here took the plea -- either y'all are smarter than you sound, or you just don't know a good thing when you see it. I guess time will tell :)
Six. Could be a record here.

@jmb: Laid off the serious stuff by the end of the 1970's. This nonsense is just me now, with a few beers, perhaps, on occasion. Heavy duty no. Mild even no. No nothing. In China. Golden Triangle right round the corner. Anything at one's beck and call. Nothing.
Don't blame drugs. My mind has simply altered over the years and I see things in a different light from others, which is probably why I allow weaker opponents to win games, now I think of it.

@MoW: Hit for 6. Wow. A personal best. Thanks.

Grey Press WTA - join!
I've introduced some real life friends to webdip in a slow game. Being the addicts we are, we're also starting a sidegame with some of the players. But just to repeat: Note that some of the players know each other.

Looking for two more!
