Gunboat to introduce new players to site
I introduced several friends to Webdiplomacy, through a full-press game. Several players (five!) indicated they want to play another gunboat game on the side to get the hang of the site. They're reasonably experienced, so we're looking for two reasonable other players to give some staunch opposition.
Who feels like a game?!

Thoughts of Americans about opinions of "foreigners"about Americans?
So, Americans, what do you think of our opinions of you? What do you think we think about you? I'm curious, because I hear rather often how we are all blaming America blablabla while I know no one who actually does that.

I am about to graduate...
Hello WebDip community.
I am about to graduate high school (2 weeks after tomorrow) and I was wondering if anybody here has any general tips or experiences they can share with me and/or anybody who is graduating. I believe many of you on this site have gone through college or high school already, and was just wondering if anybody could ease my nerves about my future.
I am going to be attending University of River Falls - Wisconsin in the USA; I plan on becoming a teacher.

Gay Magical Elves...
http://www.latimes.com/features/books/jacketcopy/la-et-jc-bret-easton-ellis-out-gay-elite-20130514,0,5341223.story

BRAVO to Bret Easton Ellis for saying all the truth a straight white man could never utter. Fuck gay political correctness. I tired of having to pay homage to every bung-plunger that feels the need to reveal his bedroom habits to me!

And jimgov -- of course, naturally, you are too ignorant, and too stupid, to actually address anything I have said specifically. You just come on and throw insults. Typical mindless liberal.

Define for me **specifically** jimgov where I am being closed minded. Define for me **specifically** where I am being a homophobe.

Moron.

Why would I address anything you say. You are a troll. You do not address a troll's comments. It just feeds the troll. You simply point out what it is. And it is a troll.
krellin (80 DX)
17 May 13 UTC
Because - and I know you are too mental deficient to read much - I have attacked the sexual reporting of BOTH hetero and homo choices. I don't want to hear about ANY of them.

I have said be gay, get married, have three wives/spouses if you want...

So...where precisely am I closed minded or homophobic, moron?

I have ONLY said, "shut the fuck up about it". Since you disagree with that, I assume you, jimgov, must get your jollies off by hearing about other's sex lives. their are plenty of web sites for people like you.
hecks (164 D)

Before I, for the sake of my mental health and my blood pressure, bail in this idiotic forum, I leave one thought.

Krellin, you horse's ass, read the goddamn piece Ellis wrote, not the LA Times synopsis thereof: http://www.out.com/news-opinion/2013/05/13/bret-easton-ellis-gay-men-magical-elves

Obviously, it's not Collins nor his coming out that Ellis has a problem with. Ellis says, "It was an undeniable moment and also extremely cool. Jason Collins is the future." He says, " What Ellis has a problem with is the way the media presents it: " I’m all for coming out on one’s own terms, but heralding it as the most important news story of the week feels to me, as a gay man, well, kind of alienating."

Indeed, Collins shared the same concerns, trying to separate himself from the very media-whoreishness of which Krellin accuses him, writing in SI: "Though I'm coming out to the world, I intend to guard my privacy. I'm making this blanket statement in part to keep rumors and misunderstandings at bay. I hope fans will respect me for raising my hand. And I hope teammates will remember that I've never been an in-your-face kind of guy. All you need to know is that I'm single. I see no need to delve into specifics."

So I don't know... Ellis has a good point. It's just not the one Krellin things he has.

"I’m all for coming out on one’s own terms, but heralding it as the most important news story of the week feels to me, as a gay man, well, kind of alienating."

DING! He wrong though -- Collins didn't come out "on his own terms" He came out purposely in a media splash.

Other than that, the writer agrees with me - being gay and "coming out' doesn't mean "media event". what *I* said bvefore was be cool...show up with your man, act like it's NORMAL...that is coming out on yoru own terms. Making a press report about it is media bullshit.
krellin (80 DX)

"writing in SI:" yeah...he wrote in SI..and pretends he didn't want to be the media whore he became? Give me a break.

Ellis isn't saying Collins should shut up about it. He's saying, good for Collins, but being gay shouldn't make him a hero. It should just make him another basketball player. Right? I don't know. Maybe you've got a point in there somewhere, Krellin, but, as is your habit, you're burying it in bravado, ignorance, and offensiveness. You'd sound much smarter if you weren't always trying so hard to sound smart.
krellin (80 DX)
17 May 13 UTC
jimgov -- MAN UP BITCH. Just ONCE in your life try to answer point for point something you don't agree with, instead of jut calling people names. God you are pathetic. I guess it's hard to type with only one hand while you get off on media reports of Collin's coming out, huh? Or are you baby raping again (I know you like when I say that...)

I threw out a couple ad hominems at Krellin earlier that I'd like to take back, or at least apologize. But I maintain... you'd be a lot less reviled on this site if you'd just say what you mean instead of trying to "win" every conversation. I think it's clear that what you're saying and what Ellis is saying are fundamentally different in both tone and content.
krellin (80 DX)
17 May 13 UTC
hecks - if he doesn't want to be a hero about it, he would just *live his life*. Instead, he came out to major media outlets, and then PRETENDED he didn't want it to be a big thing. Why do you an I need to know he's gay? the onyl people it *might* matter to are his family and friends, etc. He came out to the press specifically to make it a national announcement...you cant' do that and then say, "I didn't want to be a media hero". Come on, man....get real.

I don't know. I'll just leave Krellin (and any subsequent readers here) with the simple encouragement to read Ellis's op-ed in Out in its entirety, with an open mind. You'll all agree that it's far more nuanced and insightful than anything Krellin, I, or others have said in this thread. And it's a point nuanced enough that it can't be won or lost.

And with that, I'll close by saying to Krellin, thanks. Thanks for letting me know about Ellis's piece. I hadn't seen it. And, though I haven't found your commentary on it particularly edifying, what Ellis has to say is quite thought-provoking.

With that, I'm going to go finish some work, mow the lawn, eat a burger, drink a beer, watch a Bond film with the missus, and do all those other real-life things suited to a beautiful weekend that make life worth living.
krellin (80 DX)

Have a great day hecks. And..honestly...I'll try to take you comments specifically to me (about discussion, versus "trying to win") to heart....perhaps you have a point.

but jimgov is just a worthless troll who is incapable of "discussing" anything...pathetic.
gavrilop (357 D)
17 May 13 UTC
I don't really *want* to hear hecks talking about how he has a wife, but that's my problem, and I don't need to complain about it.

Given a choice between my minor discomfort, or making him feel like a second-class citizen, I prefer for hecks to announce his straightness on his own terms.
krellin (80 DX)
17 May 13 UTC
gavrilop - nobody is being made a second class citizen. that is *such* a bullshit argument.

I don't want to hear about Collins being a butt plugger OR about hecks. What is so hard to grasp about that. EVERYBODY needs to learn to keep their sex lives private...it's not a big deal that people have sex which both sexes...so just shut the fuck up about it and stop pretending YOUR personal choice is so god damned special. Collins is NOT SPECIAL. His being gay is NOT SPECIAL. So why does he feel the need to announce it in the NATIOANAL MEDIA...and then pretend he isn't trying to be a public media hero.

Give me a break.

I ALSO don't want to hear about how jimgov like to jack off to pictures of babies in diapers...but next thing you know he'll be demanding special attention for HIS sexual desires.

I agree with you. James Bond films are disgusting. When he announces how he and his wife are going to watch a movie, I can't stop thinking about how they might have sex at some indeterminate time in the future. I should never have thoughts that make me uneasy.

Men's Clothing
I just got my first real job last week and now I'm in a bit of a tight spot. My wardrobe needs to be updated to be semi-professional and done (mostly) on the kind-of cheap. My work environment is not overly formal (no tie or suit) but I still want to look good and purchase good quality and good fitting clothing and would like some recommendations.

Using the vote button in gunboat
Can someone please clarify what the new rules are about using the vote buttons in gunboat? Back in the day communication using these buttons was accepted (eg. "Cancel" = let's stop fighting, "Draw" = let's take out the big guy, "Pause" = Somebody help me, etc.). I know there was some tl;dr about it in the Gunboat Tournament thread but if any mods/admins can clear it up here i'd appreciate it.
