Can anyone tell me why I didn't get put into Group C's games? I signed up.
gman314 (100 D)
10 Oct 10 UTC
Because you didn't join and they were about to all get cancelled. We then made a new group C out of committed players who would actually join the games. They did.
Group A Game 1 finished. (I didn't win. :( )

http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=36998

Standings:
1. President Eden -- 36 (victory x2, defeat)
2. Onar -- 24 (survival x2, draw)
3. KingRishard -- 23 (survival x2, draw)
4. Oskar -- 12 (defeat, survival, draw)
5. Xeterog -- 7 (survival, defeat x2)
6. realpauldec -- 0 (survival, defeat x2)
7. P-man -- 0 (resign, defeat, defeat)

@gman: Austria in Game 2 had two bereavements in his family so requested a pause. But from the Global chat in Game 2 it looks like he's back now and we are just waiting for other players to vote Unpause.

In group B, we have decided to tally game 1 as a draw but to continue playing.

hey are we going to start the next round immediately after these end? is there a period in between?
gman314 (100 D)

I'm not sure yet. We need more committed players because right now a lot do not meet the qualification of less than 200 D. Also, points are not the best ranker, ghostrating is. I would like to base the league on a GR of less than 100 but that still leaves many of us overqualified and is also difficult to find. Another problem with GR is that many with less than 100 are often inconsistent. So, once we resolve some of those problems we might continue in some fashion.

Last game of Group A is done: gameID=37006

1.Oskar - wins with 18
2. Xeterog - survives with 13 (should be 14..my retreat would be to RUM)
3. Onar - Survives with 3 (should be 2 due to my retreat)
4. President Eden - Survives with 0 (still has a unit)
5,6,7: KingRichard, P-Man, and realpauldec were defeated.
Xeterog (100 D)

Oh, and this game is why I miss the commentary that had started up. Everyone, even those in game, thought that France and I were going after each other from the start (I was England). By the time it was evident we were allied, it was really too late to do much about it. I was just a little slow on advancing into Russia (probably started a year late), or we might have been able to pull off the 17-17 draw.

Xeterog (100 D)
25 Oct 10 UTC
guess that makes the final rankings for Group A to be:
1. President Eden -- 36 (victory x2, Survival, defeat)
2. Onar -- 27 (survival x3, draw)
3. Oskar -- 30 (Vicrory, draw, survival, defeat)
4. KingRishard -- 23 (survival x2, draw, defeat)
5. Xeterog -- 20 (survival x2, defeat x2)
6. realpauldec -- 0 (survival, defeat x3)
7. P-man -- 0 (defeatx3, resign)

(onar could be 26, and Xeterog could be 21 if the retreat in game 2 happened--but it doesn't affect the standings)
Xeterog (100 D)
25 Oct 10 UTC
can you edit a post: I can't sort apparently :) updated standings:

1. President Eden -- 36 (victory x2, Survival, defeat)
2. Oskar -- 30 (Vicrory, draw, survival, defeat)
3. Onar -- 27 (survival x3, draw)
4. KingRishard -- 23 (survival x2, draw, defeat)
5. Xeterog -- 20 (survival x2, defeat x2)
6. realpauldec -- 0 (survival, defeat x3)
7. P-man -- 0 (defeatx3, resign)
Xeterog (100 D)
25 Oct 10 UTC
I might have done that wrong tho...appears we use points won? correct? (I was just going by SC's)..
Xeterog (100 D)
25 Oct 10 UTC
ok. re-tallied the points. Assuming 11 SC awarded per player in a 3-way draw here are the standings (both by points won and by SC..it's the same either way really)

Player/Points/SC
1.President_Eden/40/36
2.Oskar/31/29
3.Onar/30/27
4.KingRichard/24/21
5.Xeterog/21/19
6.realpauldec/0/0
7.P-Man/0/3 (resigned game 4 with 3 SC's)
FatherSnitch (476 D(B))

Is Group A going to do End-of-Game statements? It would be interesting to hear the participants' thoughts on how the games developed.
I wouldn't mind doing EOGs for my games.

@Xeterog: The retreat's not going to count due to a known bug in the calculation of victory (after resolution/before retreats). It goes by points earned, as well, so the final standings are:

1. President Eden (36) (win x2, survival, defeat) (YES!)
2. Oskar (30) (win, draw, survival, defeat)
3. Onar (27) (draw, survival x3)
4. KingRishard (23) (draw, survival x2, defeat)
5. Xeterog (20) (survival x2, defeat x2)
6. realpauldec (0) (survival, defeat x3)
7. P-man (0) (defeat x3, resign)

So, if we're having two advance from the three groups plus a wildcard selection (for the seventh player), President Eden and Oskar advance to the finals, with Onar waiting on the possible wildcard berth.
Xeterog (100 D)
25 Oct 10 UTC
Hmm, how do we come up with different numbers? My last post was done from the end-game points listed for each game..(points earned/SC)...and we are off by one on either one pretty much down the line...

Should we do a separate topic for the EOG's? mine probably won't be detailed, but I could post something. Learned a bit from this (mainly, it does not pay to try the 'wait and see what everyone else is doing before committing to a course of action' game)...

My statements:

Group A, Game 1 (Germany
France and I functioned as allies. That said, I never got comfortable with him and was constantly looking for an opportunity to preempt what I believed was an inevitable stab. I got the sense that he had annoyed the other players in the game, especially Russia, which in turn led to them throwing their weight behind me. In the end, I gave some serious thought to soloing but after a turn or two, it became pretty clear that I was never going to make it against a united France and Turkey.

Group A, Game 2 (France)
Xeterog pretty much summed up my thoughts on this game when he wrote "Everyone, even those in game, thought that France and I were going after each other from the start (I was England). By the time it was evident we were allied, it was really too late to do much about it. I was just a little slow on advancing into Russia (probably started a year late), or we might have been able to pull off the 17-17 draw." I was prepared to forego the 18th SC to allow him to knock off Russia but in the end he gave me the go ahead to take the 18th SC and put us out of the collective misery of dealing with an intransigent Russia.

Group A, Game 3 (France)
Neither England or Germany were receptive to an alliance. England promptly invaded the channel after making representations that he was interested in working with me. Whereas Germany seemed happy just to pump me for info so he could best plan how to frustrate me. Which in the end worked out quite well. Italy and I had a strong alliance going. I was just never able to convince to put pressure on Germany to give me the relief I needed. During the first week of the tourney, I was traveling with sporadic access to the internet. So, I'd have to guess my protracted silence may have predisposed England and Germany not to work with me.

Group A, Game 4 (England)
Largely due to the aforementioned sporadic internet access, lack of experience playing so many games simultaneously and having to enter orders on my phone when I did have access, I screwed up my orders in the fall of '01 causing me not to have any builds. I never recovered from that.
@Xeterog: I used my last standings (which are accurate) and added the points totals you gave us earlier in the thread to get my results. Not sure why ours differ.

@Oskar: You're not kidding about France in game 1; more on that later. ;P
Xeterog (100 D)
25 Oct 10 UTC
ah, that probably explains it. the 1st one I did was SC's only. I went back and opened each game and made a spreadsheet with the numbers from the game (points earned and SC)..not that any really matter as the standings are the same any way we do it.
gman314 (100 D)
27 Oct 10 UTC
President Eden: I got the same standings as you but slightly different scores. Really, it's irrelevant but:

1. President Eden (36) (win x2, survival, defeat) (YES!)
2. Oskar (29.33) (win, draw, survival, defeat)
3. Onar (27.33) (draw, survival x3)
4. KingRishard (21.33) (draw, survival x2, defeat)
5. Xeterog (19) (survival x2, defeat x2)
6. realpauldec (0) (survival, defeat x3)
7. P-man (0) (defeat x3, resign)
Onar (131 D)

lol, game 1, I wanted to have a gamelong alliance with germany. I thought about stabbing, but for whatever reason, russia pissed me off too much to form an alliance with him.

game 2, as I've said, I was amazed I even got a survive. Russia is my absolute worst country.

game 3, I didn't expect italy to win. But when he did, I didn't really feel bad. Just a tad disappointed that he beat me to it. I kept yo-yo-ing between working with france, and working with england, but france's lack of press at some critical stage cemented my thoughts for that game. In hindsight, I should've waited on stabbing the english, or at least built more fleets.

game 4 was over too quickly for me to realise where I went wrong.

Group C Game 2 (gameID=37655) finished in a 3-way draw so current points table is as follows:

tarspaceheel 12
kevinpost 12
FatherSnitch 12
Dejan0707 0
ODaly 0
killer135 0
Graeme01 0

Game 1 (gameID=37654) looks like it will end very soon!
FatherSnitch (476 D(B))
31 Oct 10 UTC
Group C Game 1 has finished with a win for Dejan 0707. Table now looks like this:

Dejan0707 0+19=19
FatherSnitch 12+7=19
tarspaceheel 12+3=15
kevinpost 12+0=12
Graeme01 0+5=5
ODaly 0+0=0
killer135 0+0=0
FatherSnitch (476 D(B))
03 Nov 10 UTC
Group C Game 4 (gameID=37657) has just ended in a 4-way draw to leave the league table delicately balanced with Game 3 (gameID=37656) the only remaining game.

Dejan0707 0+19+9=28
FatherSnitch 12+7+9=28
tarspaceheel 12+3+9=24
Graeme01 0+5+9=14
kevinpost 12+0+0=12
ODaly 0+0+0=0
killer135 0+0+0=0

Game 3 is in a state of flux. A Russian/Austrian alliance looked ready to sweep the board in 1907, only for the other powers to band together to resist, precipitating an apparent collapse of the R/A alliance. Which alliances survive, collapse, are built or repaired in the next few turns will determine the direction of the game.
tarspaceheel (503 D)
03 Nov 10 UTC
Game 3 really could go a lot of different directions. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.

Incidentally, to what extent are in-game negotiations based on the league standings to be considered metagaming? I never really understood where to draw the line on that.
FatherSnitch (476 D(B))
03 Nov 10 UTC
I think in the big leagues, it is considered acceptable. What I don't think is OK in anonymous games is open discussion of identities. So if I were still in Game 3, I would certainly factor league standings into my decision-making process, based on my guesswork as to who is who, but I wouldn't discuss my identity (or other players' possible identities) with the other players (except perhaps towards the endgame if it would make no difference to the outcome of the game). How does everyone else feel about this?
Agreed with FatherSnitch.
tarspaceheel (503 D)
03 Nov 10 UTC
Great, that's pretty much what I was thinking, but I wanted to be sure. Good luck to everyone remaining in Game 3!
Graeme01 (100 D)
03 Nov 10 UTC
Agreed. By the way, when do the level 2 games start? Group C game 3, regardless of which way it goes, is at a point where it will probably end within about 3 or 4 years (a week or so).

Paying someone to stab
In a game I played (gameID=38537), after a lot of profanity, Russia offered everybody else on the global to stab me for money. Nobody has taken him seriously (I hope - although I was the last player to be eliminated by a 2-way draw), but this really bothers me. How would you react? What do you think about this act?

The Greatest World Leader of All-Time (And I'm ALREADY Sick of William+Kate! GAH!)
Pretty simple--if you had to choose any past or present world leader to lead your nation--or a new one like, say, Freedonia...Hail, Hail Freedonia!--who would it be? What Kings, Queens, Emperors and Emissaries, Prime Ministers and Presidents have been the greatest in history, and who would you want to LIVE under? We look at the best of the best here (and off-topic, as much as I like the Royal Family in England generally...STOP IT, US NEWS, I DON'T CARE ABOUT A WEDDING YEARS OFF NOW!!!)
