Is it my impression, or has it taken too long for the mainstream media to expose the Black Lives Matter movement in America for the nonsense that it is?

New player looking for advice

As someone who's never played Diplomacy before, I don't really want to join a game that's already in progress, being unable to gauge its position. At the same time, if I start a game that I want to say is 'for noobs' then a bunch of people will join it and destroy everyone else. There also aren't any starting-up games which will accept me as a brand-new player. Which approach is better for getting started: picking up games in progress, or starting my own games?

Hoping for a love child from webDiplomacy and Backstabbr

I just started playing online for the first time since the Diplomacy Judge days, and have a couple games here and a couple games at Backstabbr. I love the features here, but the UI for Backstabbr is far nicer (in the sense that it's easier to tell what's happening on the board). Any chance the developers here would work on a cleaner UI inspired by Backstabbr? Do others agree that the webDiplomacy UI could be improved?

Constitutional Rights for Embryonic Americans?

In the GOP debate last Thursday, unsurprisingly, abortion was a point of discussion amongst candidates. Obviously they were all pro-life to some extent or another, but Mike Huckabee went so far as to say that abortion was already illegal, because unborn children have the rights to equal protection under the law and due process. Right from conception, they have constitutional rights, he argues.

Regardless of your position on abortion, is this a valid argument?

SIGNUPS ARE STILL OPEN AND NOBODY IS EXCLUDED YET

The only pertinent detail that Valis and I are changing is the size of the tournament. To do this, we need to get an accurate number of players who are interested. At the moment, RR qualification is still the same (95, followed by 90).

For the record, I fully agree that players like ssorenn, Chaqa, and Nigee should be in the tournament. That's what prompted the effort to expand. Well, that and the popularity of gunboat on this site.

Please continue to signup and please do not create an "alternates" list yet.

Valis and I will continue signups through Saturday.

This may be a case where RR unduly penalizes folks who play a lot of live games. I would certainly vote for lowering the threshold, but perhaps with the understanding that ALL of us will lose something if we NMR/CD in the tournament.

I should probably say "each" ... my point is that regardless of RR going in, there ought to be an increased level of attention given to this game and an increased penalty for inattention.

My RR is lower because I primarily played live games for the past 5 years or so, and missing phases is pretty common in those. I still wish a live-RR separation had been implemented, but it's not a big deal. I honestly don't see how RR is a valid qualifier for a gunboat best of tournament though. Gunboat GR should be the only thing that matters, obviously anyone with a bad RR isn't going go have a good GR.

Chaqa: I assume it's because we want the tournament to finish in a reasonable time frame and the TDs not to have too much work. With 42 (or 49?!) players, even a small number of NMRs will prompt a lot of work for the TDs in finding out if the player is gone, pausing games, finding subs, etc. RR is proxy for that.

I agree maybe there should be separate live-RR but I guess the TDs can look into that case by case if necessary.

RR is there because of the issues in past tournaments with NMRs.
That said 90 seems reasonable to me.

I'm not convinced that great GR necessarily means good (non-live) RR. I suspect they're going to be related, yes, but I dunno how tightly.

Nothing personal @thorfi, but I believe Chaqa deserves a place in that tourney way before you do. He is an established GBr and with his RR and his contributions to this site over time should give him precedent over many in there already

Just to be clear, nobody "deserves" a place in the tournament. This isn't UNICEF. We have two valid means of qualification and, at this point, both will likely be used in determining the final field. If I could have everyone on the site on this tourney, I would, but that's just not feasible.

RR between 90 and 95 means you usually NMR at least once in a game. that's not cool. I concur with the 95 RR cutoff.

Alternatively, it means that 7 CDs from 2011 or earlier when you had awful internet and were busy being tear gassed pulls your RR that would otherwise be 99% right down through the floor.

My two cents: anyone who discusses who should get bumped, or what criteria should be used to decide who gets bumped, besides Valid or 2WL, gets bumped. Let things play out guys. There will be plenty of time to fight with each other later.

I'd cut and paste through a list myself, but there seems to now be more than one list floating and a lot of them have assumptions about the politics of who is in or out -- and I'd rather not wade into that.

^ Yup. I got nothing against Chaqa. He should sign up, if the TDs want to put him in, I have zero problems with that, even if that meant I was the one being bumped for some reason. TDs run the selection, that is all.

I need help with a research paper!

It's due tomorrow night and I have to do a 12-15 page paper on how the internet of things and the third industrial revolution will affect society and more importantly the work force and employment.

I'm up to around 10 pages and I have no idea what to write for the last 2.

Great video, but the first thing i think of is relationships, (and given that i was recently dumped, this is no surprise) Naturally you could also apply this to diplomacy; but the probabilities get a little messed up, and in Dip not taking a bet means taking a different course, which may also be risky.
