Three plays, then a commercial. Kick-off, then a commercial. Touchdown? Oh gotta wait for the replay for 5 minutes first. The fact that the biggest football event - the Superbowl - is more known for its commercials than the event itself, speaks to how entertaining it is, really.
As for corruption, I don't think I need to even mention how disgusting college football has become in the wake of the Penn State fiasco, among other things. Tradition is being killed in the name of big tv money, with conference re-alignment. You cannot go a week without another recruiting scandal. It's clear that sports rule and academics are a distant second at major universities across the country.
As for the NFL, you have a league that covers up player-injuries and treats retired players like garbage. Players are given the green light to play even if they have concussions. Of the thousands of former NFL players, only a handful get any disability benefits. Players only get get five years of health coverage after they retire. Mind you this is a league in which the average lifespan is 55 years, and in which thousands of players endure dementia, depression, and hip & knee replacements, among other things. This is the same league that wants to increase the schedule to 18 games. This is a league which cares more about helmet company profits than head safety.
Another issue in the NFL which has me wanting to walk away is how they've conducted the so-called "bounty" investigation, which reveals their utter hypocrisy. On the day when Goodell launched his PR stunt vs the Saints, Junior Seau committed suicide. There has been a large number of such tragedies and near-misses like TO's suicide attempts, and the NFL does nothing.
