A Question About US/UK TV...
Well, all my friends like Doctor who, so I've taken to watching it...and a friend told me DW was still in B&W in 1966...while Kirk was fighting that hilariously-rubber-suited Gorn in color already? On the other side of the coin...we seem to borrow some TV shows and ideas from Across the Pond...why is the BBC behind tech-wise and US TV behind "idea-wise?" (Are we...or is this just me?)

Good to know Lowes thinks a show about people merely living as families in the United States is a political lightning rod. Home Depot it is.

@Putin''I think Fulham's anti-genetic bias is shining through. He can't countenance evolutionary biology having any explanatory power whatsoever.''

I must say Putin likes to either deliberately distort what I write or imagines that I write something which I did not. I apologise for a further repetition, but this was my first post on the matter:
I do not doubt that there is a genetic component to obesity. Ever increasing rates in many world countries also point to the important influence of the environment in this matter. Fast food anyone?

The argument about how obesity does not necessarily dictate ill health is of course true. It does, however, predict ill health. An analogous argument is well founded for smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as we all know. Those who pretend otherwise are in denial.

Also that sounds really immature because of how I worded something. Try and look past that to the point I'm making and not so much at my unfortunate word choice.

Did you know eliminating one morbidly obese American female and sending the goods she would have otherwise consumed to Africa provides enough sustenance to feed a family of six? True fact.

Did you also know that we can fire her corpse into outer space and conservation of momentum guarantees that we can dodge incoming asteroids in this manner? Eat your heart out, Bruce Willis!
Putin33 (111 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
Many people who eat fast food regularly are thin. You're using weight as a proxy for diet. The smoking analogy to obesity doesn't work because smoking is a behavior and obesity is not. Your original statement was incorrect because it implied a causal relationship between obesity & type-2 which does not exist.
Putin33 (111 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
You give lip service to genetics much like Gould gave lip service to natural selection, only to harp on environmental factors as if they're the primary engine of "obesity" whereas genetics plays a trivial role. Your glib dismissal of the point about 20-30% of people with type-2 being of normal weight demonstrates that you insist on obesity being causally tied to type-2 and "exceptions" aren't to be believed.

A: The gorilla has a soul and should be respected.

@ Putin- "people like you" bs is something I'm not even going to bother to respond on. I do not discriminate or ridicule anyone and never said anything about losing weight being easy.

@ Draug- sorry for my late reply, I agree that of course some people have it harder than others. Some people seem to effortlessly walk through life whereas others need to struggle, for what ever reason. I'm not saying obesity is easy but I do say that it is not an unique struggle, although I do realize that today's society is very hard on obese people. I can't see that attitude change any time soon unfortunately.

@ Mafia- ah, that makes more sense. Given the topic I assumed it was related to obesity. Being Dutch I'm not very aware of American suicide trends.

Still need to do some work unfortunately, good night to all. Not to you Putin, you're an asshole.

Mr_rb (594 D)

I don't like people putting words in my mouth or claiming 'people like me' congratulate themselves for ridiculing people. I mind that a lot more than being called an asshole, I can imagine some people see me as an asshole, but I do not discriminate or ridicule people. Anyways, good night to you too.

Also also, I don't see anything wrong with finding the willingness of a prospective spouse to clean a dwelling up as a positive trait. God knows if I were left to clean the place up then it would be just at a functional level, anything above that being an excessive use of energy which could go to my work or schooling and would only be spared in a moment of exceptional distress at the state of the dwelling in question.

An expectation? I'd disagree, and I think it's silly to expect something like that, but ultimately if members of either sex on an individual basis expects their prospective spouses to do the cleaning, that's their expectation. Good luck finding a spouse who will do all that for you...
@Yonni: Yes, yes I do.

"@President Eden - Ummmm..what does Scarlett Johannsen eating popcorn have anything to do with snarkily calling out taos on having an understanding of gender that dates back to the 19th century?"

Nope. Popcorn ,gifs are the Internet's way of saying "this is ridiculously entertaining." I had a list of them and happened upon Scarlett's for that quote (which makes it slightly more funny now that I think about it).

Sigh. Yay sarcasm. (There's an irony here somewhere but I don't know where.)
Listen, you know what I do with threads that don't interest me? I don't read them.
Being bitchy and saying "Look at me! I'm bored! I'm so bored! Look at me! Look at me! I'm bored!" Isn't clever. It doesn't make you smarter than us. It makes you look like a smug asshole. Just saying.
Huh?
