I think the assigning of TA's should be based on country, not person. Each TA should be assigned to the country that they play best/well. Therefore, the TA would be assigned to a specific country and to whichever player takes that country at the game start. I'd hate to be playing Austria and get a TA that has mostly defeats and draws as that country.

I had the same query! It means School of War.

If there's still room for a participant, I'd love to be implicated. I don't know where I stand though, don't know if I'm a student or a TA. Surely not a prof. I'll accept to be placed where ever the organizers see fit.

@goldfinger - I think it would be better if I can stay as a professor and not a TA, so if I don´t have time to comment, I don´t screw with any student and with the game. I think that this time the players are mostly not very experienced and the TA´s should give advice when his pupils ask for it or when they see something that deserves to be given some atention and this will mean a great level of commitment.
uclabb (589 D)

@goldfinger- I would play a 36 hour game or something like that, but not faster. I also have a pretty large game load right now.
uclabb (589 D)

And if you were willing, I wouldn't mind playing non-anonymous. I am a little tired of the games being so faceless. If eel like especially when I have more than 1 or 2 games, I start to forget my history and the play style of my competitors if all my games are anonymous.

Hope that I get some points by the time this game gets off the ground. I have a few games close to finishing.
Tru Ninja +1. TAs need to state what country/countries they feel they're best at.

I agree with Tru ninja though, and each TA should state the three countries they believe they're best at, in order of preference.

rdrivera, I put you back as a professor and switched Tru Ninja to TA. Since each phase length is going to be 2 days, a year could take a whole week, so could you comment twice a year if they let the phases go all the way?

Riphen, hopefully in a week everything will be sorted out points-wise with you and ninjaintervention.

I moved Cachimbo and Leif back to the students lists. Now, this may seem odd because of Pete's GR, but Pete is a great player and SoW veteran, so I can personally vouch that he will be a fine TA. Now, if we can get a few more students and TA's, perhaps even a second game will be in order? I'm going to make the first game with the 7 students with the lowest GR's, to ensure that the people who need it most (no offense) get the help they want.
uclabb, i am fine with a 36 or 48 hour non-anon game. I have too many anon ones going on myself
The kiddos who don't have enough points can steal some of mine.

If I had to pick 3 countries I'm best at, I'd go for France, Turkey and Italy

France, England, Germany
Triumvir (1193 D)

France is probably my best (France is probably everyone's best), and I also have solod a couple times as Germany and Russia, so they are probably number 2 and 3. I've had good games with Austria, too, which I know is one that can be tricky, so I'll volunteer to take Austria if no one else wants it.
By the number of solos: Austria (7), Russia/France/Germany (6), England (5), Italy (4), Turkey (3). I think I'm stronger with Italy and weaker with Germany more than that record shows, though. So I'd say Austria, France, Russia, Italy, Germany, England, Turkey would be my list.
Oh, derp, that's for TAs. This is what I get for trying to be useful at 5:30 AM.
Ivo_ivanov (7545 D)

I'm not sure what the difference between a Professor and TA is, but I'd be happy to play a game if you need more people?
How exactly would I steal your points, Mr. President?
I could be TA as well. My GR and points should be high enough to warrant such a position,

I'm going on vacation for two weeks, starting tomorrow. If you start in the meantime, just ignore my offer.

My favorite countries: Austria/Russia/Italy/Germany. In other words, a central power with many neighbours. I'd probably rank Italy as no.1 and Austria/Russia/Germany as a shared second.
Tru Ninja (1016 D(S))
26 Jun 11 UTC
I prefer Russia, England or Italy assuming I'm a TA and not a professor. This would put the TA list as follows:
Abgemacht: not G
Draug: F/I/T
goldfinger: A/E/G
bonotow: (I checked his profile and he'd be best at E/R/T)
Triumvir: F/G/R
Tru Ninja: E/I/R
Uclabb: E/F/G

A reasonable setup would be: Austria: goldfinger....England: uclabb....France: Tru Ninja...Germany: Triumvir....Italy: Draugnar....Russia: Abgemacht....Turkey: bonotow

This setup lists the TA's with the highest GR available with alternates capable of covering for any country.
-------------------------------------------

Backup TA's (in case a TA goes into limbo)
basvanopheneusden: A/R/I
Pete U (F/I/T)
Cachimbo

We could set Ivo and Rdrivera as Professors (commenters in the forum thread that comment on the previous moves made by the students in the game).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just to list some appropriate rules, I would urge any professors to seer clear of giving any comments that might sway future seasonal moves, like "x is in a tough spot going into the next season. He needs to be talking to Y and forming an alliance if he's going to pull out" or "Y should really ally with X in the next season so that he can accomplish his goal".

If the comments are based only on the things that have already occurred, it gives the students the ability to learn from both the TA and the professor in the forum for future games and doesn't influence the events in the current game.

Alternatively, TA's should find a means of giving the student the control over what to do with the TA giving advice on various ways to proceed. Get the student to come up with their own goals based on your suggestions. This might include things like "at this point in the game, you need to begin thinking about how to seal up the stalemate line to prevent a loss at the hands of X." If a student asks for advice on movement, help him to double-check his moves to ensure that the enemy can't retreat into his backfield. Using questions to answer questions promotes thought and allows the student to transfer learning to future games whereas a straight out answer only applies to this particular game.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lastly, it sounds like the general consensus is that the game should start next week and be 36 to 48 hours non-anonymous (I don't think anon is going to make a difference) and I think it should be WTA to help with GR a little more.

BTW: bas, I'd be happy putting you in as a 3rd professor as well if you didn't make TA. I think it's appropriate.
Tru Ninja +1... we'll ignore the oversight. ;)
NinjaIntervention: We get a mod to give them to you.
Wow. I think being a professor might be a little too much honour for me. Especially if the other professors are such strong players as Ivo and rdrivera.

If you're starting next week, I can't join anyway. I'll be on vacation.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Dawkins, Hitchens, and The New Atheists Get Heir Turn
I'm going to try something different with this week's go-around, as I think a few people believe me to be overly-agressive in pushing my opinions and also because this is a topic I've put off doing for a while now, as not a fan of the New Atheist movement, but not knowledgable enough about the particulars to try and tackle it. So, I aim to be more the receiver here, and I ask two questions, both inside--and I'll get my education from you all. ;)

Kids...
I hate the way that they get really quiet when you're putting in your diplomacy moves and when you get up to check on them (because quiet kids are synonymous with kids getting into trouble) and you find them throwing things into the toilet.

Yesterday I woke up after hearing the kids play in their room at 5:30 to find that one of them took off their diaper and thought it was a novel idea to do various things with their poop and top it off by peeing on his crib.
