Retirement Announcement
I'm retiring from phpDiplomacy after my last game is completed. I may occasionally visit the Forum, but I won't participate in any more games. There's more to life than this silly game anyway. My only regret is that I even got started in the first place.

"the ability to write does NOT MAKE ANY SMART. my writing his absolutely horrendous(if it wasn't for spell check NONE one but me would be able to understand it)."

"not every one fallows close attention..."

saffordpc...
Please tell me you have failed english class numerous times or that English is not your native tongue.

Also, it pains me to say it but you need more than spell check. You need to check your grammar, and that includes sentence structure.

You hold a PhD, an XBox live account, don't know the difference between "a quote" and "a quotation" (those must have come up a lot in your dissertation)?

And yes, I'm fairly certain I could articulate myself pretty well at that age. Granted, I'm only 19 now, but I'm fairly certain I'm still 1. more articulate than that, 2. unconvinced that your level of discourse would be a sign of genius in a teenager, and 3. that even two years out of high school I wouldn't use my having been on the debate team (I was) as the salient example of my ability to spot bullshit. Wouldn't your years of education in critical thinking and responsibility in grading student assignments (as a professor) be a better marker for that...?

I wonder if any newbies read these forums before joining any games. If so I think they would run a mile. Mapleleaf and Onar I think your comments about suicide to be particularly distasteful. There is a line gentleman, and I think you have crossed it.

@Kestas - I'm sure you do not want people on your site soliciting people to commit suicide. It's your site and you have a duty (in my opinion) to report Mapleleaf to the appropiate authorities. In the event that you do not (and confirm that you have done so) I shall.
mapleleaf (0 DX)

It's "mapleleaf", lower case.

Get in line, and good luck making it fly.

...besides which, I firmly believe that life is precious, even diplomat1824's. cough cough.

I was being witty and sarcastic. What I really meant was: I want diplomat1824 to clone himself/herself, and I want all of the clones to join up as diplomat1824 -1, diplomat1824 - 2, etc. Then we could all have 10 times as much fun.

Appropriate authorities; what a wanker!

lol what appropriate authorities would that be then?
saffordpc (163 D)
31 Mar 09 UTC
@ white sammy yes, i know i need more then spell check and ihave failed English because i cant write well at all. most of my errors are i get ahead of my self when typing(note me missing words or words combined together) and then don't bother proof reading them because i am rather lazy, but i do believe i still got my point across
Saffordpc, so you are self-described as lazy and willfully ignorant. You entered this conversation to state that writing well does not make someone smart. Your exact quote was "the ability to write does not make any smart. my writing his absolutely horrendous" By stating your writing is horrendous, my assumption is you were trying to show that although you write poorly, you are smart.

So, aside from being lazy, ignorant, failing English and being a poor communicator, why do you think you are smart?

Lol. Appropriate authorities. Who's h gonna report them too? This website has an international base of users, and most of the countries have freedom of speech. Hate to tell ya bud, but there ain't "appropriate authorities". And the idea you would be so confrontational about something so trivial is completely ridiculous. I don't think anyone, not even diplomat1824 took this conversation seriously before you. Lighten up. Its an online forum. If you don't like it, you can go live in a cave somewhere wher you don't get internet. Its the nature of the beast.

Everyone will find some things on the forum they don't like. What is generally a skill of diplomacy players is not to take things personally and ignore what they don't want to hear. Just because we're outside the game doesn't mean everything is suddenly malicious - people do have different views.
If anything was moderated, what would it be?
saffordpc (163 D)

@ DingleberryJones im good at math and science not English and social studies. i am majoring in computer science. i build computers establish networks and write programs(i will admit some of which were really bad or had no use what so ever). point being most people have trouble or can't even do basic tasks with a computer. the only reason for the post was to say he was wrong nothing else.
Onar (131 D)
31 Mar 09 UTC
I'm a writer, well... an aspiring writer, and your skills aren't as bad as some I've seen.
Also, suicide isn't that big of a deal. If you go through wih it, it's because you wanted to in the first place, not because some jackass in a forum told you to do it.
Saffordpc,
I'm a computer programmer. You'll find that being able to both speak and write English well will make your job alot easier.
Onar (131 D)
31 Mar 09 UTC
a lot is two words, unless you meant to say "allot" which wouldn't make any sense, given the situation.
Onar (131 D)
31 Mar 09 UTC
See? we all make mistakes.
'Alot' is something that gets automatically fixed by Outlook, so I've probably done that before. However, I never claimed that I didn't make mistakes. What I said is that being able to speak and write well makes your job easier. That is not negated by my spelling error Onar.
saffordpc (163 D)
31 Mar 09 UTC
code is still quite different then normal English because there are a lot of things that are abbreviated or are phrased differently then they would be with standard English
Agreed Safford. As I said, I am a programmer. That doesn't mean I don't need to speak English in order to get my work done.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

The most annoying thing I find with scripting is having to use American terms for things! COLOUR!
I'm not talking about scripting Figles. You will have to speak with PEOPLE, you will have to get requirements from PEOPLE, you will have to give estimates to PEOPLE. You not only need to be able to speak with them, you need to be able to speak well and with confidence, so they believe you and trust you.
saffordpc (163 D)
31 Mar 09 UTC
that is always true but the ability to speak and write are two different things
And you will need both of them. Much of your communication will be through email.

I used the term 'appropiate authority' because I do not know where those whom I consider to have commited a crime live. Kestas may be aware of where they live and therefore, in my opinion, should act accordingly.

In the event that the alleged perpertrators reside in the US then in most states The Model Penal Code, which makes it a crime to “purposely aid or solicit another to commit suicide” applies- Model Penal Code 210.5(2).

A person who suspects that a crime has been commited does not have to be judge and jury and debate with himself whether the offence falls within the interpretation of the law, he merely has a duty to report it and let the police and/or prosecution authorities investigate the matter.

This isn't a freedom of speech issue. Freedom of speech is curtailed where others can be harmed; incitement, blasphomy and soliciting crimes. Just because this is an internet forum doesn't mean we can opperate outside of the law.

I still think that the owner of the site has a responsibility to report a prima-facie crime.

Invictus (240 D)
31 Mar 09 UTC
The Model Penal Code isn't used in every state.

From what I've found your argument in invoking the code doesn't even hold water. Here's one of the first Google results, even. It's not a legal link or anything, I'm sick or reading those, but it's a pretty professional blog.
http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:z4IBMYfhBWsJ:cyb3rcrim3.blogspot.com/2007/05/suicide.html+Model+Penal+Code+210.5(2)&cd=3&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=us

Also, Kestas is in Australia. He doesn't have to follow ANY American laws.

Statistics
Since joining the site, I have joined 8 games. At the start of those games I have been assigned to the following countries:
Russia- 1/8 times. Turkey- 3/8 times. France- 4/8 times.
Is there some sort of "France or Turkey" setting I have activated, or is this just a statistical anomaly?

Moving out of neutral SC; becomes neutral again?
Something surprising happened in one of my games.
I had an army in Bulgaria. I moved the army to Serbia, and Bulgaria reverted to neutral control.
I thought Bulgaria would remain in my control.
Can some one explain? -scott
