Retirement Announcement
I'm retiring from phpDiplomacy after my last game is completed. I may occasionally visit the Forum, but I won't participate in any more games. There's more to life than this silly game anyway. My only regret is that I even got started in the first place.

The game "Muntadar Al-Zeidi Tribute" was paused for a while. When it was time to unpause, one player (Coolbreeze42) was no where to be found. We have also tried to draw, but again, we can't with out Coolbreeze. Can a monitor please draw the game for us? Thank you.

Statistics
Since joining the site, I have joined 8 games. At the start of those games I have been assigned to the following countries:
Russia- 1/8 times. Turkey- 3/8 times. France- 4/8 times.
Is there some sort of "France or Turkey" setting I have activated, or is this just a statistical anomaly?

Unpause: Eliminated players
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=8841

Eliminated players really shouldn't have a say in pause/unpause. Germany has been eliminated and will not vote to unpause. Can I get some divine intervention here?

Moving out of neutral SC; becomes neutral again?
Something surprising happened in one of my games.
I had an army in Bulgaria. I moved the army to Serbia, and Bulgaria reverted to neutral control.
I thought Bulgaria would remain in my control.
Can some one explain? -scott

Revelation about the site...
See below.

First, I wanted to say thanks to everyone who offered their condolences to my family's loss. It wasn't my intention to seek that, but it was still nice to see. I had decided to take time off, but I've since decided that this community is an overall positive thing (even if I'm only on here 10 min/day) and I shouldn't give that up at a time when I could use a few more positive things.

I'd like to contrast that with an ESPN baseball league I'm in. I missed the draft and people were upset, so I posted my situation (with an update that the infection has spread to 2 more family members) with an apology. The responses I got include "you should have thought about us too, not just yourself", "What was the point of missing the draft, he's still dead anyway", and "If you're not going to take this league more seriously maybe you shouldn't be here". Needless to say I dumped that league to make time for this site.

Consider this a long way of giving the site and community thanks and a big pat on the back. We've got to be a top-5 most awesome/diverse community on the web.

Thanks for the thoughts guys, but unnecessary.

TheGhostmaker was just added to my "Targets" list... kidding. But I really do have a list where I remember who was particularly dangerous or likely to stab, etc. with notes on how they did it, years, etc. I recommend it to everyone, it's saved my ass more than once.

Wow, I'm affronted with the responses you got from your baseball league. Is there no decency?

I've always been impressed with the calibre of character that is attracted by Diplomacy. There is immense empathy, even amongst the most vicious backstabbers.

Well I'm glad you're staying. After all, slaughter is the best medicine, right?

rratclif. Can you read me your notes about me!?
rratclif (0 DX)
03 Apr 09 UTC
Sorry wooooo, they're confidential :-p.

The gist of it is one game I tried to stab you and not only did it not work you kicked my ass for it. I picked a bad time, but you played it quite well. The other we had little interaction, but I got the impression you'll be fairly true to your word and would be on the list of people that I would prefer an alliance to. Main point was that you seem to be good at judging which opportunities are in your best interest and which aren't, I wouldn't expect a poorly timed stab.

There's more, but I've said too much already.

My sympathies rratclif. I think this site draws very humane, and intelligent, thoughtful folk.

All the horrible things we do in the game is for our alter ego's sake. A sort of release of negative psychic energy into a save containment area.

I do things in the game that I actually have pains of conscience over. Things I would never do in "real life". It is a place to go and explore that kind of behavior without consequences.

Sounds like the guys in the ESPN thingy need to get a life and an social ethics chip installed.

I believe that phpdiplomacy is a nicer community than the basketball league because diplomacy is in general much more intellectual than basketball league stuff, and therefore will have mostly nicer(and more understanding people).

My condolences as well.

I'm sorry to hear, about your family. My condolences, and may things turn out for the better for those who are not out of the woods yet. I'd like to thank you for opening my eyes to how wonderful a community this is. Diplomacy is an emotionally stressful game. I know that in a game when someone starts running their mouths and making inappropriate comments, I have a tendency to call them immature. But really, the fact that we get through these emotionally stressful moments and conversations and still come out as a strong community, is a tribute to how mature we all really are, to add to your revelations, and to thank the members of this site who make it worthwhile. My condolences. May things take a turn for the better.

And I can't believe the insensitivity in your other league! Is there no empathy anymore? I'm sorry you had to put up with them, and glad you found this community to be supporting as it is.
