I think it's fairly straightforward why some people will vote for Bernie and then switch to Trump. Both Bernie and Trump appeal to, among other constituencies, one half of the "losers of modernity" (white, male, blue collar workers). The other "losers" are evangelicals, but I don't think either has much draw for that demographic.
Bernie, being a socialist, obviously appeals to the more working class people. These are the people who have lost their good-paying union jobs and might now be struggling to make ends meet. These people support Bernie because he'll help them out.
Trump wants to make America great again, recalling the post-War era. He's right when he says America "doesn't win anymore" and in pointing out that manufacturing jobs are leaving/have left. The white, male, blue collar workers want to be back in the post-War era: it was the best time to be white, male, and blue collar.
Both Bernie and Trump are also perceived to be anti-establishment as well, so they offer at least some faint hope of change. They also both have a rather abrasive style when dealing with the press: Bernie uses smarmy condescension and Trump says whatever will get him the most airtime. In so doing, they both embody values that would likely receive a lot of support amongst white, male, blue collar workers.
To recap: Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump both speak their minds, challenge the system as it stands, and promise to return the US to the halcyon days of yore. It's more strange for me to hear everyone's confusion as to why Bernie voters would switch to Trump.
