GoT Variant?
I recently started watching Game of Thrones, and as you can imagine it reminded me of this wretched game quite a bit. Has anyone thought of making a variant based on Westeros? Does one already exist?

Bernie Sanders kicked out of hippie commune for laziness
http://freebeacon.com/politics/bernie-sanders-asked-leave-hippie-commune/

Raises the question in my mind of what will be done (if anything) with people who refuse to work in the socialist society Bernie and his supporters wish to impose. Forced labor camps? Expulsion from the country? Revocation of their EBT card and Section 8 subsidies? Or nothing?

The Trump Effect
Recently I've been hearing several left leaning souls start talking about the likelihood of them voting Trump now that the Bern has been all but extinguished. What I am curious about is why. What is it about Trump that makes him the lesser of two evils?

Just a basic question!
What does voting to 'Cancel' mean? what do you cancel when you vote for it?
And, how does Pause work? when you pause, how do you resume the game? is it paused for a specific amount of time or do you vote to un-pause later?

First Time Prom.
Help me WebDip, you're my only hope.

Seriously, though, I am a male junior, and found out today that the person on my mind has me on hers. Prom is in 2 weeks. I have not asked her, and fear that the window has shut on this opportunity. Even if I did go (all my buddies want me to go) I would have no idea what to do, what to say, or where to go.

Austria Hungary
Has anyone ever commented on the apparent loss of the word "Hungary" from AH's appellation? I hear it in face to face play, but around here, the red pieces are only ever Austria.

True, but the real question is: "Does anyone ever call 'Turkey' the Ottoman Empire or the Ottomans?
Deinodon (379 D(B))
22 Apr 16 UTC
Good point, however, the basis for my even bringing it up is that Austria Hungary is how it is referred to in the rule book. I think Turkey is just Turkey in Diplomacy, right?

I'm 50% Hungarian by blood, have been to Hungary, and my name is in a Hungarian museum in Hungary.

I feel your pain OP.
Idk about the rulebook, but the wiki calls it Austria-Hungary to start, then shortens it to Austria all other times. It's really long to say...

I have played f2f with players who refer to Austria-Hungary as Austria and Turkey as Hungary. I believe this variant is not widely accepted.

Latest rulebook says "These Great Powers include England, Germany, Russia, Turkey, Italy, France and Austria-Hungary (hereafter referred to as Austria)".

I just downloaded all versions of the rulebook to check out of curiosity:

AH 1992 refers to Austria-Hungary in the country names parts of the rules, then uses Austria in move examples and in later rules.

AH 2000 is the wording above.

I wonder how many who have only ever had exposure to the game through this site never knew about the full name.
thorfi (1023 D)

Oh wait, it looks like 1961 Games Research Inc version is the last one to consistently use Austria-Hungary everywhere including order examples. 1971 Games Research Inc uses Austria in various order examples.

Has anyone ever simply called them Hungary?

@Mr. Falcon,

Sometimes when players are being cheeky, they refer to the Austrians pejoratively as the Magyars, which is a reference to Hungary.
Al Swearengen (0 DX)

Hungary wouldn't have been an accurate label, though. Historically the Austrian half-of the empire dominated national policy. Historically the Hungarian minorities weren't always happy with this.

I presume that the names were chosen for how the powers were commonly referred to in 1901. The last time I checked, Edinburgh wasn't in England.

Peregrine Falcon (9010 D(S))

It was a half-serious question. I meant in an actual game.
@Al Yes, the Austrian Empire had a larger population and political influence than the Kingdom of Hungary. However, Hungary was still very much sovereign in almost all it's internal affairs.
Maybe I'll just start calling them "The Kingdoms and Lands Represented in the Imperial Council and the Lands of the Holy Hungarian Crown of St. Stephen" in games.
Fireplay5 (100 D)

I'm going to try that one out Falcon. Especially if I'm in an anonymous game as Austria.

Certainly the Entente didn't treat Hungary as though they had no influence on national policy.

According to wikipedia, Franz Josef's official title was the following. Demand people use that in press!

His Imperial and Royal Apostolic Majesty,

Francis Joseph I, by the grace of God Emperor of Austria; Apostolic King of Hungary, King of Bohemia, Dalmatia, Croatia, Slavonia, Galicia, Lodomeria, Illyria; King of Jerusalem, etc.; Archduke of Austria; Grand Duke of Tuscany, Crakow; Duke of Lorraine, Salzburg, Styria, Carinthia, Carniola, the Bukovina; Grand Prince of Transylvania; Margrave of Moravia; Duke of the Upper & Lower Silesia, Modena, Parma, Piacenza, Guastalla, Oswiecin, Zator, Cieszyn, Friuli, Ragusa, Zara; Princely Count of Habsburg, Tyrol, Kyburg, Gorizia, Gradisca; Prince of Trent, Brixen; Margrave of the Upper & Lower Lusatia, in Istria; Count of Hohenems, Feldkirch, Bregenz, Sonnenberg, etc.; Lord of Trieste, Kotor, the Wendish March; Grand Voivode of the Voivodship of Serbia etc. etc..

Srpska Vojvodina was abolished and subsumed under Hungary in 1867.

Turkey didn't exist in 1901, it was the Ottoman Empire.
England qas a country, which was a constituent part of the United Kingdom (of Britian and Ireland), UK. And also the centre of the British Empire.
The French Republic, and Russian Empire seems fine. In 1901, Italy and Germany were still frehly minted countries looking to stake out their claim to overseas Empires. (Unlike the Dutch, Spanish, Portugese and Danes/Swedes who had pretty much had their fill of Empires... Though i guess Spain and Portugal both had African colonies into the 60s...) Still, i don't know, was Germany the Second Reich? And Italy wasn't a Kingdom at the time?

Turkey was known as Turkey long before the Ottomans Turks. There were the Seljuk Turks before them. The Turks originally came from the Mongolia region, were related to Mongols, and worked their way west by way of Afghanistan and Iran. They tended to stay put and migrate slowly since they were so powerful. One of there Empires was the Mogul Empire situated in southern Afghanistan and the west part of India. Some of these details may need correction. Info is from "The Barbarians of Central Asia". It shows central Asia as an interaction sphere as important as any other, like Europe or the Near East.

Germany and Italy weren't unified until the 1860's. The "German Empire" of the time was Prussia and a few other states under Kaiser Wilhelm II. It was called the 2nd Reich by the National-Socialists. The "Kingdom of Italy" was ruled by the House of Savoy. I don't know how much of modern Italy it included.

Turks in Turkmenistan being the other country with this name... i'm fairly sure they derive it from the same group which you are refering to.

orathaic (1009 D(B))
26 Apr 16 UTC
Though the use of the name 'Turkish Empire' or 'Turkey' in western maps from 1890 is fairly telling... (see: http://www.heritageantiquemaps.com/Gallery/Cram,%20George/Cram1895TurkishEmpire.jpg )
thorfi (1023 D)

@orathaic: The original pre-publication draft of the rules has "United Kingdom". :-) Every published version of the rules is "England".

It has always been the Austro-Hungarian Empire for me. Diplomacy was the first place I'd ever heard it referred to as Austria Hungary, which manages to sound both clunky and mundane unless spoken out loud in a generic central European accent.

In games I find that "that bastard" will generally suffice.
Litter Picker (100 D)
26 Apr 16 UTC
Too vague; there might be up to four additional bastards (other than the bastard you're talking to). "That little red bastard" is perhaps best. In global, though, it should always be called "Australia."
thorfi (1023 D)
26 Apr 16 UTC
It is true. Australia has red kangaroos which is why the pieces are red.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
26 Apr 16 UTC
reds may confuse those who automatically assume it refers to russians...
Litter Picker (100 D)
26 Apr 16 UTC
Quite so. Never refer to Austria as "Those little red bastards." Anyone stupid enough to think that Russia is a little red bastard should be invaded immediately, as should anyone overly intelligent or even slightly female.
