A Diplomacy Game for Literature Lovers?
Well, we've done Star Trek Diplomacy before, each power corresponding to one of the powers from Trek...anyone up for playing a game where each player of a power (we'll say Turkey counts for the whole Middle East to make it easier) takes on the persona of a great author from said country? Ex., Shakespeare/Chaucer/Dickens for England, Hugo/Proust/Racine for France, Goethe for Germany, Dostoyevsky/Tolstoy (not that one!) for Russia, etc...?

Canada's economic problem
So I am an econ major in my first year of university, so obviously I know very little compared to others about economics. However Canada has a rather strange economic problem (which I will explain below) and I think I have a viable solution to solve it. Can some of the greats on this site explain why my solution wont work (as why isn't it on the table as a solution)

Genie
You come across a genie, and you get one wish, assume that the genie will properly carry out your wish, not malicious misunderstand the intent. Only rule is no asking for an infinite stream of wishes (or anything that would be tantamount to this).

A nice MLT (Mutton Lettuce and Tomato) sandwich, where the mutton is nice and lean. It's so perky; I love it.

I hear tell that such a thing is even better than True Love.

Omniscience would be boring, knowing everything? Where would the fun be in life? You might enjoy it for a few years, maybe even a few decades, but it would get old. Omnipotence, the power to do anything, but having to first figure out what it is that you need to do to accomplish something? That would be fantastic. For example, say I wanted to make gold from the air, I would need to figure out what I would have to add to the various molecules in the air in order to get gold, or if I wanted to make myself Immortal I could either hold the basic structure and substance of my body constant, or I could attempt to discover the cause and solution to aging. And with omnipotence one could still make mistakes, actions you take could have unintended consequences, there is still a randomness to everything.

I'm okay with being mortal. Heaven or no heaven, God or no god, it doesn't matter. As long as I make it to 80 or 90, that's good enough for me. If Heaven exists, great. If not, oh well.
Omniscience would be fun. You'd go insane so quickly, then you can start manipulating people's minds just for the sake of doing it then engineer the destruction of the human race so that it is as humiliating as possible for them because you thought it was funny.
You'd be the darlek in Dr.Who, who knew everything that would happen in the future, including the destruction of his race, and he claimed that the daleks were destined to rule the universe or some shit, and came up with a genius plan that he knew would fail because of the Doctor and result in the death of his race. And as the Doctor came in and it was too late for the daleks he started cackling in maniacal laughter about how this was their future all along and he was the one who had to make it happen.

A do-over.

Go back to age 12, knowing everything I know now. Just about every major life decision would be different.
^And then you make sure you encounter the same genie at the same time and place and repeat again to correct the mistakes you made the second time round. Rinse and repeat.

If I had a second wish I would wish the entire left side of the political spectrum out of existence. Either that or have my previously requested 100 trillion dollars and a high birth rate to fund a massive war to finish communism once and for all.

The wisdom to know when you've wasted a wish, perhaps?

To be honest, after looking over this thread again, it would be best to wish for the end of magic wishes.

"Sieg heil."

Let's all just pretend that the two wishes cancelled each other out perfectly =)
Karatur (0 DX)
26 Oct 12 UTC
Octavious: Perhaps. I wouldn't know until after the wish was granted, but as this is not a malicious wish, I suspect I would be satisfied with the gift.
Octavious (2701 D)
26 Oct 12 UTC
Are you sure there isn't a hint of wanting to out wise your neighbours in the wisdom wish? A tiny hint of underlying smugness? One questions what you would do with your wisdom. If you wish to use it to better mankind it is really not much different to the other wishes for power we've seen.

I wish to be able to grow a beard without having to put up with the itchy stage that has always made me give up after a few days... And world peace.

Karatur (0 DX)
26 Oct 12 UTC
That is just the point. I need to be wiser than smug. You know the story of Socrates, who claimed to k now that he was ignorant. This testimony was enough to cause the Oracle of Delphi to declare him the wisest man in all the world. Of course I am smug, which is exactly why I know I need more wisdom.
Octavious (2701 D)
26 Oct 12 UTC
You assume it is unwise to be smug. For all you know true wisdom may be rooted in smugness. What you aspire to is popular culture wisdom, which is all about knowing your limits, being at one with the universe, and giving people advice that 'is not what they want, but what they need'. Frankly, anyone can do that sort of bollocks if they really want to. Wishes aren't necessary.

True wisdom is keeping dental appointments, wearing a coat when it's chilly, and not eating too may sweets before dinner.

Haha! So, your wish has already been granted!
QinShiHuangDi (0 DX)

Surrey Kar, couldn't resist.
@Octavious. No, I think magic wishes should exist. But it should be like D&D, where the genies hate everyone that commands them and want them dead and they purposefully misinterpret everything you say to achieve that result. Ask for a large sum of money and they'll make it appear in a pile of 5c coins directly above your head. Ask to be the most powerful man in the universe and they'll send you to another dimension in which you'll promptly die. You need a lawyer to deal with genies in that game, and they're often too much trouble than they're worth.
It'll give everyone in this thread a lesson in humility. I don't think even 1 person would have got what they intended so far.
No shit dD, the OP explicitly said the genie wouldn't do that. Otherwise I think everyone would have been lawyering it up big time.

Show Me Something Interesting
The other day, someone told me I am too caught up in the past to function appropriately. It was then made a point that my taste in music accurately depicted the same conceptual view of my personality. So tell me, strangers, what is better today than it was yesterday? And can someone please explain the appeals of ANY form of modern music? I'm not sorry when I say that I am satisfied with listening to this for the rest of my life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZQ_JAgHxR14
