ever notice with women
they're either not really ready and there's more friction than maybe you'd like, or it's a slip-n'-slide? why a binary function? has anyone else noticed that?

Any Debaters?
So, really simple topic. Are there any past/current High school/College debaters here? I'd just like to see how prevalent debate (specifically in the NFL [National Forensic League]) in this community is. Post below with your event (LD, PuFo) and status please! :)

SAT
First things first… if you haven't been in school for 10+ years, don't tell me my individualized education doesn't matter because things are a hell of a lot different than they were in 2002.

that is cash YHN
@YHN - oh, so we're gonna do the high school academic equivalent of comparing dick sizes? Okay. Its from a few years ago, but mine was:
740 Reading, 800 Math, 720 Writing

So fuck you I'm better lol

and you make me feel like I have a small dick from my only one of these tests, so I will stay out of this thread

perfect math score?!? that's impressive.
Mmm, I dunno Goldfinger. That's a nice math score and all, but is it really what the academic ladies want?
SAT Subject Tests, anyone?
540 on Spanish how you doin'?
(I'm not actually proud of that, by the way)

umm... Im a junior in high school, took the PSAT today, although i im not sure i did too well.

Last june though i got an 800 on the biology E subject test.
I havent taken the SAT yet, Im waiting till the end of the year.
Keep fighting' the good fight, Yaks. We all believe in you.
yaks (218 D)

lol yeah well ill see what i score on the PSAT and then ill know what to study for. It is true though, i feel like the test isnt structured very well. Im gonna have to go through so much work and buy a tutor and stuff.
uclabb (589 D)

Not bad, goldfinger. ;)
ghug (5068 D(B))

I wouldn't bother. I got scores on the PSAT that were about 1500 equivalent points lower than my SAT scores, and it scared me a little, but it turned out to be fine and I got the scores I wanted without too much effort. If you're worried about your scores, buy a prep book and study a little, but remember that it's far from the most important thing to colleges, and there are better things to do with your time like keeping your grades up and enjoying life.
Yeah a lot of good it did me though lol. The test really means not much at all. I took the Biology, US History, and Math II subject tests and got 700 or above in all of them. I can't quite remember those scores, because I cared even less about them than I did about the actual SAT haha
yaks (218 D)
18 Oct 12 UTC
@ghug, yeah thats what my friends tell me. My parents are really into me getting good scores, and its increasingly competitive to get into a good school nowadays so i also try to focus on studying but i am definitely keeping a balance. I also have other extracurricular, so im not throwing my life away for one test.
@yaks, if you find you happen to blow at taking the SAT, for whatever reason, many if not most colleges are now accepting the ACT as an alternative, and I know a lot of people who say it was a hell of a lot easier for them.
Really though, I'd say you're in pretty good shape if you can manage to get into the top 10% of your class.
yaks (218 D)
18 Oct 12 UTC
@golfinger, yeah i took the US history test too, and im planning on taking the math II at the end of the year.

To change the topic a wee bit, can the people who have taken the ACT tell me how it compares? i am considering taking it also but i dont want to waste time studying on it if its just the same as the SAT.
yaks (218 D)
18 Oct 12 UTC
@YHN well i go to a private school and only have about forty kids, so even though i have a high ranking i cant really use that as a measure.
Has anyone heard of or actually taken the ACT and had a harder time than they did on the SAT?
ghug (5068 D(B))
18 Oct 12 UTC
@yaks, like YHN said, being near the top of your class is more important, and the ACT is also an option. There's a kid that I go to school with who got a 2370 on the SAT. He's really smart, and he put a lot of time into it, but he really has very little else going for him. His only extracurricular was swimming, which he was nationally competitive at, but he quit because he was a lazy stoner. He's not going to get into any good schools. At the same time, there are several kids like me with similar grades and lower SAT scores who actually do interesting things with our lives, and colleges are going to like that a whole lot more (at least I hope so).

From what I've heard, the ACT is just an easier and less stressful test. The biggest major difference is the science section, which just amounts to reading a bunch of things and only requires rudimentary scientific knowledge and good logic skills. There's no harm in taking it if your parents can afford it.
yaks (218 D)
18 Oct 12 UTC
@ghug, I definetely see what youre saying. I make sure to keep up good grades and I do have extracurriculars, but im concerned with my scores as even though theyre far from being the whole admissions process, i do need to get a good score to get into a top-teir school.
I think most people end up getting roughly comparable scores on the ACT as they do on the SAT, or at least the few people who told me their scores did. I took it as well and the results were nearly identical to my SAT results.

Just play an obscure sport; that's what I did.
yaks (218 D)
18 Oct 12 UTC
whatever, i think im just gonna end up taking both and seeing how i do on both tests. I think that my personality would just fare better on the ACT, but i feel like the SAT is a neccesary staple also.

@uclabb, what did you play?

@goldfinger, if you don't mind my asking, what were your GPA and extracurricular like, and what schools did you get into?

Muted threads blocking home page?
Do muted threads still take up room on the home page? I really have no idea what the cutoff is for how many/what posts make it to the home page.
Just wondering if anyone knew.

Distinction Between Draws
It could just be me, but my indifference to number of points and focus on %'s of wins/draws etc stops me caring so much about the number of participants in a draw, and much more willing to try to solo with the possibility for a large draw, than just have a smaller draw, thoughts?
