You guys are great
I love this place. This site. I hate to gush but I just want to say this has to be the best community on the Internet. So many of you are smart, I consistently feel outclassed in every way and look up to a lot of you. You always make me think, and are always respectful. And to the trolls and haters out there, I love you too. I love playing diplomacy and writing on the forum... it enriched me so much. So... just thanks!

How can I find live games, not very fast, live?.. Like one phase is 5 or 10 minutes; because waiting 10 hours or 1 day is so boring?

Question about points in WTA game.
In a WTA game two players went CD and the other three agreed to a draw. I want to know if the two players on CD will be in the draw and get the points as they already have some SCs?

Just because I can (and I like to do so every time I rediscover this site) I'd like to draw attention to this game:
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=225
Completely impossible now, of course, where you win by SCs (as in the rules) but in the version of phpDip extant then, where you won by units, entirely doable though, I believe, never matched.

Live game crashes.
Hey guys. I love playing live games but they always seem to crash on the unit-placement turn after a player is eliminated. Can the mighty Mods help fix these games so we can get back to playing them. Understandably they won't be live anymore, but at least they'll be playable. Anyone? Anyone?

Supporting Against yourself
Hey all, I recently supported Finland to St. Pete's, and sent St. Pete's to Finland, mistakenly thinking they would swap places. I see now they couldn't, but I don't understand why my 2 tiered attack on St. Pete's didn't dislodge it, is there a rule that you cannot provide support against your own territories? Any big competition requires commitment and free time. If you (a metaphorical person, not YOU you) decided not to enter the leagues because of commitment or time issues, you probably shouldn't apply for this tournament either.
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Sep 09 UTC
@Xapi - but, you/i may have decided not to enter GFDT so you can have time for the Leagues. of you/i might have decided to not enter either, knowing that your time is limited, and that another tournament might be coming later - such as the Masters, or the World Series. just b/c you/i don't have time for all of them doesn't mean you/i don't have time for one of them, no?
Centurian (3257 D)

Diplomacy is a complicated game. Success in a tournament does not necessarily equate to being the best player in the tournament.
Xapi (194 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
In any of those cases, you have applied to at least one tournament and will therefore have a chance at it.

And you will also be able to get in through the G-R spots.

I just think that G-R alone is not enough for this, and seeding the players from different sources will give us a variety of qualities wich would be good for the team-

"Diplomacy is a complicated game. Success in a tournament does not necessarily equate to being the best player in the tournament."

This is my point exactly. If we want a team that will be succesful in a tournament, we need to take into account who has been succesful in tournaments in the past.
jarrah (185 D)

Thanks for that... So it's not really possible to have an inter-site game / championship with only two different sites?
Centurian (3257 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
Interesting Xapi that you took what I said and got the exact opposite meaning that was intended. Although I suppose you are right as well.

Have you guys considered if there are even 7 people interested in playing?
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Sep 09 UTC
@ jarrah - i guess not. but it would be fun to do an FBdip vs webdip face off!

@centurian - if we put out a call, i bet there will be interest. it's probably a good idea to get the criteria decided first though, no? but you may be right, maybe few people would be interested.
jarrah (185 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
@djbent

Might be tricky. Definitely need to be anonymous, but with hand picked players. I would think no top players would ally just because they're on the same platform..

Might also need to be on a different site (the Korean one?? (not to be confused with Korean won)) because some top players here might not want to lose G-R points by playing against some extremely good players who just don't have a rating here yet. Hopefully they'd still take it seriously.

Say 3 from FB, 4 from here?
trim101 (363 D)

you cant keep banging on about the tournements there are many reasons why people wouldnt play in them, think about this, imagine if edi hadnt joined and played in the gfdt and joined phpdip today would you say he cant be in the team, even though he would have low points and ghost rating
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Sep 09 UTC
yeah, that could be interesting. definitely a good idea to do it on the korean site. neutral ground ;D

and anonymous is a good idea, i think. best players should be above taking those things into account, but it would be good to remove the temptation. plus, people have probably played with each other before on the respective sites, and i think people are often more likely to trust people they have played with before, though maybe not. anyway, you wanna see if there are any takers on FB?
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Sep 09 UTC
@trim - actually i was just thinking about that. we maybe need to take into account further things, like say someone like edi's FtF experience, or orathaic seems to have a fair bit as well. it complicates the matter further.
trim101 (363 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
i tell you what get everyone to post who wants to play and i will pick 14 7 for the first team and 7 reserves looking at points ghost rating and stats i think thats the best idea
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Sep 09 UTC
lol @ trim. how handy of you to solve the problem!! =P

"you cant keep banging on about the tournements there are many reasons why people wouldnt play in them, think about this, imagine if edi hadnt joined and played in the gfdt and joined phpdip today would you say he cant be in the team, even though he would have low points and ghost rating"

So how do you want to do it then? Alphabettically, start by Ed- ?

" tell you what get everyone to post who wants to play and i will pick 14 7 for the first team and 7 reserves looking at points ghost rating and stats i think thats the best idea"

Yes, that is the most stupid idea ever.
trim101 (363 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
actually why is it so stupid?i dont want to play so why not get a neutral person/people and let them decide who plays?Xapi so you saying if edi joined today you wouldnt let him in the team because thats bollocks
trim101 (363 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
so tell me exactly how people pick teams?because i know for sure that it aint just on maths
Xapi (194 D)

"trim - actually i was just thinking about that. we maybe need to take into account further things, like say someone like edi's FtF experience, or orathaic seems to have a fair bit as well. it complicates the matter further."

I think that if we are to choose a team that represents this site at a tournament, we need to take into account only what happens in this site. I don't know if it's points, G-R, tournaments, most wins, wins percentage or what, but we have to keep our choice to what we all know, wich is the stats and results from this site.

trim101 (363 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
well xapi where on this site does it have your ghost rating or tournament results?
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Sep 09 UTC
haha

yall are funny.

it's not that big of a deal. can we have the discussion about it be a bit more civil? let's try to see stuff from each other's perspective, see where we have common ground, etc. it's only a possible idea for a game played on the internet - no high stakes really. =)
Xapi (194 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
"actually why is it so stupid?i dont want to play so why not get a neutral person/people and let them decide who plays?Xapi so you saying if edi joined today you wouldnt let him in the team because thats bollocks"

1 - Because no one is neutral. You are biased someway, somehow, even if you don't know it. Perhaps you give excessively more weight to wins over draws, or the other way around. Perhaps all you care about is G-R, making someone who has been playing all PPSC available for a WTA tournament.

2 - I don't want Edi on the team. Not because he's not a good player (wich he is, and he has also showed it here) but because he is, in a way, an outsider. He came to this site to see how it was and give his opinion, and compare this site to others.

He has played to get the feel of our community and play style, but he has also done that in many other sites simultaneously. I don't think he'd WANT to play for our team, and even if he did, he wouldn't be representative of us as a community, even if he is a part of it in his own unique way.
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Sep 09 UTC
@trim, aside from you just picking who should play (b/c then we'll have an argument about why you and not my 15 year old god-daughter who makes fun of me for playing this game) what other ideas for criteria do you have?
trim101 (363 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
its just something to argue over though, like i said i dont want to play so i dont really care, except that xapi is wrong and im right :p
Xapi (194 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
"well xapi where on this site does it have your ghost rating or tournament results?"

G-R is calculated based on the results in this site.

The tournament is an open-to-all event played exclusively on this site, and the mayority of the community recognizes them as official.
trim101 (363 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
it doesnt have to be me i was just using me and @ Xapi edi as an example. @djbent i would look at points, ghost rating win % draw % defeated % Survived % i wouldnt look at tournaments at all, and i would use a bit of common sense so say someone like edi or whoever with low points but obviously very skillful gets a look in
trim101 (363 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
@Xapi show me where on the site it has tournament results or ghost rating?
Xapi (194 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
The worst part is that you're actually being serious about taking a completely subjective approach to this.
Xapi (194 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
"@Xapi show me where on the site it has tournament results or ghost rating?"

Am I inadvertedly writing in Spanish or are you intentionally being a dumbass?
trim101 (363 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
no one can be completely subjective, im just saying in anything when they pick a team its not just maths that decide the team, you use common sense as well

Question about countries in Civil Disorder.
Just a quick question about what happend when a country goes into Civil Disorder. One of the players in our game had login problems and his country went into CD.What happens when we attack his units?. If they are forced to retreat what happens then? Do they retreat to a random location or to their supply centre of origin, or are they destroyed? We have our game set for a turn every 48 hours so I dont want to delay the game by 2 days by attacking someone one of his units.
