I know it's a few days late, but I thought it'd be nice to have a thread to appreciate a great baseball player's remarkable achievement, even if he is a Yankee now. Ichiro is awesome.

Local minimum wage
How local should minimum wage be? I just read something about minimum wage in Holland, but the costs of living in Amsterdam are certainly higher than on the countryside no?

It's good to be back!
Hey everyone! Not sure if anyone remembers me, I wasn't an especially vocal member, but after an eight month sabbatical, I'm looking to get started back up in diplomacy. Would anyone be interested in a 2-day phase game, probably a 100 point buy-in? If so, post in this thread, and I'll send you a PM with a password on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ben Affleck as Batman
It just breaks my Comicbook loving heart. I just can't see Affleck being a good Batman. Oh and the kicker is he's going to help write the movie (the Superman/Batman one) and is signed for multiple movies.

Daily Quote (Does Anyone like this Idea?)
So I am kind of new to the forums in that I have never posted anything and mostly just read what everyone is saying when it interests me. Since I saw there was a daily bible reading I figured I could start up a daily quote.

If someone is already doing this let me know as I don't want to steal their idea.

Yellow - frightfully cynical. I would say there are certain opportunists to which this definition of Moderate applies, and def. of Politics.

That being said, I also believe there are true believers. I'm not sure if you were around for/remember Ronald Reagan, but I see him as a true believer. I see Obama as a true believer, much more so than Clinton ever was....though both certainly play politics in order to achieve the goals of that which most interests them.

In other words, and I think this holds more true for someone that aspires to the Presidency, there will be one or two things for which the person *truly* believes and that is what they will seek to accomplish. Everything else becomes fodder for the game of politics...but this does not discount the fact that they do believe in something.

I think these definitions wholly discount that someone ever believes in anything. But....for the most part I like and, sadly, agree with them.

Further to the point....given that finding a *majority* of representatives of the people that are *passionate* about any single issue is a hopeless concept, it relegates every issue to the cynical view of politics, simply because there are not enough true believers.

The few examples I can think of where the majority were true believers, for a time anyway, would be things like the resolution to go to war following 9/11...a truly apolitical moment, if there ever was one. It lasted a very short time...but...

YJ, I think that's a fair guess at what Bierce would think. Based on his previous quotes I could believe he said that had I not been told otherwise.

Krellin, fair enough. Discuss away.
Let me clarify what you mean so I don't misinterpret... by "true believers" do you mean politicians who are involved in political movements because they actually want to help and believe their cause is just rather than the opposite who are involved for ulterior motives or simply public image?
Yellowjacket (835 D(B))
18 Aug 13 UTC
haha I actually still think most politicians aren't just in it for the power or money.

Is that frightfully naive? I guess when confronted by the realities of the world, it is.
kramerkov18 (1570 D)
18 Aug 13 UTC
Not necessarily. I'm sure plenty of them had good intentions and things just didn't work out how they planed. Such is life.

*This is more of an excerpt than a quote but I found it rather interesting.

"The human understanding when it has once adopted an opinion (either as being the received opinion or as being agreeable to itself) draws all things else to support and agree with it. And though there be a greater number and weight of instances to be found on the other side, yet these it either neglects or despises, or else by some distinction set aside and rejects; in order that by this great and pernicious predetermination the authority of its former conclusions may remain inviolate."

"So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full. But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing."
