Nice things thread
It's a gorgeous late-winter Friday in Maine. There's not a cloud in the blue, blue sky, and it may get all the way up to the high 40s today. I'm in an uncharacteristically good mood, so I decided to start this thread inviting you webdippers to be happy about something.

Why do government "inflation" figures always discount FOOD and ENERGY prices....which are the *bulk* of people's regular spending...?

Liberal of the day awards
To help Sbyvl36 on his noble quest of muting liberals, we will utilize this thread in determining who is the most liberal person of the day, and why he is liberal. Post possible nominations below and reasons as to why they are the liberal of the day. Together we should be able to make a decision and make Sbyvl36s life easier.

A mute a day keeps the Liberals away.
I have now started a tradition of muting one liberal everyday. I mute these people based on the radical statements that they make in the forum. As I don't want to hear it anymore, I am taking advantage of a very pleasant tool.

Celticfox- yea get it right! he isn't muting people who he disagrees with, just those who don't share his same exact beliefs, because "holy father" forbid someone believes in strong state governments or someone who is not religious! "Holy father" forbid that someone has a different opinion than the conservatives! "Holy father" condemn all to hell that do not believe what Sbyvl36 believes!!!

P.S- add me to your mute list, and beg that the lord have mercy on my soul for being a liberal sympathizer!

Wait a sec.... In your definition you defined interventionist as liberal. So, both George Bush elder and younger and Ronald Reagan are liberals? That's the bit that confuses me.

Please mute me. I don't want to be involved in any conversation with you. I thourougly enjoy taking on my opponents in both serious debates and the good old flame war, and do *not* wish to paricipate in odd discussion in which some people are only partially involved because someone gets his undies in a bunch, takes his ball and goes home...or mutes people...same thing.

Please mute me until such time as you are able to grow up and stand on your own and defend your ideology in an open dialogue.

"Liberal: Advocating for state control on almost everything. (I just muted Damian). Someone that advocated ignoring the Constitution, or someone that trashes the Holy Father. Someone that is an interventionist. Someone that wants higher taxes and more spending. If you fit into one of these categories, or if you are a troll, you shall be muted. "

I'm pretty hazy on what all these political positions stand for...but to my understanding (and based off our College's Political Science Class), a Liberal is someone on the right of the left-right spectrum?

If someone advocates State Control over everything, I'm pretty sure that he is not liberal but rather a socialist. Am I getting this wrong or is my college professor teaching me wrong?

"a Liberal is someone on the right of the left-right spectrum? "

That would be a classic liberal, or simply liberal as we know them in Europe. Liberals and conservative are both right-wing in Europe. In the USA, liberals are the left and conservatives are the right.

I find you posting about muting people who simply don't agree with you a little annoying. Obviously you can mute them but making a whole thread to taunt people into giving you a reason to mute them is immature and is one of the few times I've regretted not being able to mute someone.
Jetsfan2431 (257 D)

Another observation. You have a contradiction. Ignoring the Constitution and trashing the Holy Father. The Constitution protects your right to trash away. So by muting on account of religious views, you are in yourself violating the principles of the Constitution.
So I'm curious. Can I get muted for my disagreeing statements, even though I'm not actually a liberal?

"What Europe calls a socialist, we call a liberal (hence Obamaism=Socialism) and we Europe calls a Liberal, we call a right leaning moderate."

Few Europeans would call Obama socialist, unless they were acquianted with American political rhetoric. Obama would be a clear Christian democrat. What Europeans label as socialist wouldn't even warrant a serious response in the USA. The liberal = socialist is distinctively American nomenclature.

I hope I've already been muted for demonstrating that Sbyvl has a tenuous grasp of the concepts of law and the Constitution, despite bleating like a sheep about how its constantly being violated.

And how he constantly declares victory despite being ignorant as sin.

"Liberal:
[1.] Advocating for state control on almost everything. (I just muted Damian).
[2.] Someone that advocated ignoring the Constitution, or
[3.] someone that trashes the Holy Father.
[4.] Someone that is an interventionist.
[5.] Someone that wants higher taxes and more spending.

If you fit into one of these categories, or if you are a troll, you shall be muted. "

1.) Socialism was around before Marx. Marx (and Engels) defined a political philosophy or a historic progression prediction if you prefer. Communism, in my opinion, is the same, economically, as socialism. Politically, though, this has never happened. The idea is that a dictator takes over until the time at which it is proper to give up control of the powers of government. The USSR was a totalitarian socialist country. China is similar to the USSR, but they are more socio-capitalist. I won't go on explaining as I believe you get the point. I am a communist in the sense that the political part is carried out along with the economic part.

2.) The Second Amendment has been interpreted incorrectly in a wild way. Guns are not to be distributed to everyone who desires one, but rather armaments should be ready and available for a free standing militia to defend against raids from Indians, or foreign powers. The 10th amendment lost the Civil War, thus, I don't believe it exists as the founders intended.

3.) I'm a Catholic. Pope Francis I seems to be an interesting fellow, and I do truly hope and pray he is a successful pope. I think Pope Benedict XVI was voted in as an interim pope between Pope John Paul II and the next "great pope". I think he used the power he wielded as pope in a very poor manner. He changed the mass based on (in my opinion) self righteous scholarly views, he failed to address the matter of sexual abuse in any way, and he gave up the papacy for the first time in 600 years, and the first time ever for reasons not involving the issue of multiple popes. He actually created multiple popes for the first time in 600 years!

4.) Syria

5.) In a capitalist society such as the United States, I consider myself a fiscal conservative. To this point, I believe the must fundamental responsibility of a government after the protection of its people from domestic crime and foreign invasion is the stability of its currency which is most fundamentally served by having a balanced budget. For this reason, I advocate cutting spending in defense, reforming social security, and melding Obamacare, Medicaid, and Medicare into one healthcare system, preferably single payer, and by doing this keeping the promises made to multiple generations of Americans. Because this will not balance the budget, I advocate adding a national fair tax on spending, a decrease on income tax from the current rates for anyone making under 1 million dollars per year, and a progressively higher tax for those making more than 1 million dollars a year in increments of 5% per million per year up to 90% at anyone making over 18 million dollars a year. I haven't figured out the math, but I assume the revenues would go up, and this is definitely raising taxes on certain people.

In conclusion, suck it

Do Americans save money?
It may just be stupid television, but it seems like most Americans either spend their money as soon as they get it or save it to buy something more expensive as soon as they've got enough. Is this true for most Americans or is that just television? I don't know about other countries but here in the Netherlands most people (adults at least) have quite some money stashed on a bank account for worse days...
