Any Debaters?
So, really simple topic. Are there any past/current High school/College debaters here? I'd just like to see how prevalent debate (specifically in the NFL [National Forensic League]) in this community is. Post below with your event (LD, PuFo) and status please! :)

Distinction Between Draws
It could just be me, but my indifference to number of points and focus on %'s of wins/draws etc stops me caring so much about the number of participants in a draw, and much more willing to try to solo with the possibility for a large draw, than just have a smaller draw, thoughts?

"The invasion might've shuffled the income statements of vested corporations but was hardly necessary to ensure Southern Europe gets its oil."

Uhh....duhhh....there was growing civil unrest and violence in the country that threatened to disrupt the flow of oil. Good god, do you live in a news vacuum? Or are you purposely ignorant?

I am conservative and fully willing to reduce military expenditures IF our lame-ass allies would do their share of the work in the world...or....you know...if we would stop getting in to unnecessary and wars and then staying in them when there is no objective, no exit strategy, no definition of victory...

When I have to transcribe into Latin script, I try to stay true to the original. People writing Gaddafi probably pronounce it badly because of it. Unless you are hardcore and transcribe from Arabic to Pinyin I guess.

At no point before the West start meddling in this "civil war" were the oil supplies threatened. The rebels were in no position to attack the pipelines, not least because it would make them the bad guys, like many other insurrectionist groups across the globe who are for some reason on the American list of naughty people. And Qaddafi of course wanted the business-as-usual oil revenues. In fact, it was the war itself that proved dangerous to the flow of oil because that's how war works. Explosions and stuff.

Back to the topic...

Obama needs to do very well, Romney needs to do just about as good a job as he did last time to show it wasn't a fluke. I hate town halls debates, but I think Romney may have the edge here. He's been talking to people in situations like this for the last year and a half, while Obama hasn't. Obama's also not too good when it comes to speaking off the cuff, which is what these things are all about. A major part of what makes them so silly.

This is an important night. Obama can't survive back-to-back losses, but Romney's surge is hardly so large that he can recover if Obama knocks it out of the park. We'll see.
Tyran (914 D)
16 Oct 12 UTC
I think Obama will do what he should've done at the last debate and am hoping Romney does some more flip flopping on policies and gets called out for it.

Too bad you aren't admin, eh?

Qaddafi is the "correct" English transliteration, though I wish nobody ever had to transliterate at all… I think it's fun to read Russian names o_O

Ryan proved in the VP debate that he's trying to stick up for Romney's foundation, which is cool and all, but he's not revealing enough policy. If he does that tonight, it may not matter what Obama does.

And by the way, I didn't base my prediction of Obama winning based on any poll. I realize Romney is ahead in popular votes, but Obama is ahead in both Ohio and Virginia, the other swing state being Florida, and I'd guess whoever wins two of the three will be the next President. I'm amazed Ohio isn't Romney's and Florida isn't Obama's though...
ulytau (541 D)

Tyran, don't worry, Romney will flip flop 15 times his quota as a dutiful Stakhanovite he is and will make all hard workers proud:

Expect nothing less than an exemplar shturmovshchina from him during the last debate!
Invictus (240 D)

bo_sox48, we've had 56 presidential elections and only four times (I think) has the winner of the popular vote not gone on to win the presidency. If the candidate (Obama or Romney) doesn't win the popular vote then it's a pretty safe bet that they won't win a state like Ohio or Virginia (Florida looks like it's pretty much Romney's now).

At least, I sure hope whoever wins the electoral college also wins the popular vote. Good God would that be a mess...
bo_sox48 (5202 DMod(G))

Not necessarily.. it happened with Adams and Jackson and it happened with Gore and Bush. It's a toss up, but those are the three states that'll matter.

I have one or two ideal outcomes (one slightly likely, other one not a hope in hell)

Map A is pretty straight forward and in my oppinion, plausible:
http://www.270towin.com/2012_election_predictions.php?mapid=JuW&referring_service=google#.UH3hBhUsf5Q.google

Map B is less likely but still an ideal for me. Tan=Gary Johnson:
http://www.270towin.com/2012_election_predictions.php?mapid=Jwd&referring_service=google#.UH3qQizUAwo.google

Either of those happening would make my day, it would also probably convince Americans that their election system is retarded and they need a new one.

Government funded education is a massive waste. More funding means more waste, not higher test scores. Privatize the system. You could double education spending and test scores would not move an inch. There is absolutely no correlation between high funding and high test scores in the United States. That's what I was insinuating.

On the other hand, increased military spending helps the entire economy, provides endless opportunities for young people and results in a more peaceful world.

About the debate, I'm predicting a big Romney win. It's a town hall debate. Romney is a master debator. Obama can't run on his record and he's screwed in the absence of a teleprompter.

I'm expecting an assertive Romney to double down on his superb performance in the last debate. Obama will be feisty and energized but will have a hard time against Romney's wall of facts.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
16 Oct 12 UTC
"And Gallup...seriously...who thinks Obama is winning this?"

Me.

If Obama wins tonight...all that momentum Romney's built up goes the other way.

And now it's reversed, remember:

Debate #1 all the expectations were on Obama, Romney was supposed to do poorly...

NOW everyone's been talking about how badly Obama did and how shockingly well (at least that's the popular opinion) Romney did...

Expectations have been raised for Romney following a good debate (he can't pull the "Oh, well, Obama's just a better wordsmith than me" card if he flounders this time, winning Round 1, he's now expected to do as well or better, which is hard for any candidate to live up to) and lowered for Obama (following a lackluster debate.)

Biden put a bit more energy into the base with Debate #2...Obama now needs to take the undecideds...he still has the lead in Ohio...

If he keeps that lead and has a good debate tonight, Romney's in dire straights, even HE said he NEEDS Ohio to win.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
16 Oct 12 UTC
"Obama can't run on his record and he's screwed in the absence of a teleprompter."

On his record: True (to an extent, I think there are things he can run on as well as the deficiencies) but Romney has record issues as well that Obama can exploit...let's not forget all those businessman skeletons in the closet he still has, the 47% remark (Biden used it, Obama hasn't, watch for him to use it in a key moment tonight if it fits) and I'd also disagree...

Obama is BETTER with a teleprompter, but then, most public speakers are, he's not flailing or George Bush-bad without one, just lesser, and so it APPEARS worse:

When a bad speaker is a little worse without a teleprompter, not too noticeable...
When a good speaker is noticeably worse without one, well, it IS noticeable...but they ARE still a good speaker at their core.

"Romney's wall of facts."

You mean Romney's Wall of Vague and Unsupported Assertions.

I'm sorry, but for all the great rhetoric of his I'll give you for Debate #1, I DID NOT here him killing with facts...

In fact, quite the opposite, and it's telling when both Obama and Biden AND the ABC Moderator asked their counterparts to be specific and tell HOW, SPECIFICALLY, they would Fix X, and the response both gave were vague answers (the ABC Moderator called Ryan on this) and Romney said he'd "Sit down" with Congress to "work it out."

Sorry, but "sitting down" and "Working it out" is neither a novel new idea Obama has yet to try, NOR is it specific.

@Tyrsn -- Do...you and your fellow students are a bunch of fucked up bitches....so you think we should dump MORE money into educating a bunch of fucked up pricks?

Fuck you, moron. I HAVE TWO KIDS IN PUBLIC SCHOOL. I eat dinner with them **every night** at the dinner table so that I know what goes on in the schools. I TALK to the teachers....even the Administrators when necessary.

I also understand that the fucked up schools are FORCED to cater to all the fucked up stupid kis, the "autism" bitches that belong in special education and have been forced into "mainstream" school by Teacher's Unions and are degrading the whole system. I know that teachers have *zero* authority to discipline you stupid undisciplined brats, as opposed to when me and Draug and friends wen to school and the principle coudl *literally* spank you ass for getting out of line. Now you stupid bitch kids -- because of left-wing policy -- will tattle TO your teachers if mommy or daddy spanks you, instead of being afraid the the teacher will spank you for being such a bitch.

It isn't the fucking MONEY that is the cause of problems in the school system, moron.

Fuck....with cave-man technology this country put a man on the moon with the scientists born of our schools. Now you morons graduating from school can barely read.

Thank the fucking liberal and teacher's unions for that.

What the fuck has Obama....who had 2 SOLID years of FULL DEMOCRAT control of Congress to do whatever the fuck he wanted....When the fuck are you stupid ass liberal morons going to stop blaming bush and grow the fuck up and realize that Obama is a fucking road-kill disaster? Give me a fucknig break.

YOu bitches complain that Romney isn't specific enough. OBAMA HAS NOT PASSED A SINGLE FUCKING BUDGET, IDIOT!!! Romeny even suggesting, hinting at a budget is a fuck of a lot further than Obama, who when he HAS proposed a budget generally gets voted down with ***ZERO*** votes....NOT EVEN DEMOCRATS VOTE FOR OBAMA BUDGETS.
