A Question About US/UK TV...
Well, all my friends like Doctor who, so I've taken to watching it...and a friend told me DW was still in B&W in 1966...while Kirk was fighting that hilariously-rubber-suited Gorn in color already? On the other side of the coin...we seem to borrow some TV shows and ideas from Across the Pond...why is the BBC behind tech-wise and US TV behind "idea-wise?" (Are we...or is this just me?)

@ Draugnar- I am aware that there are people with obesity due to medical causes. Whether that's a significant percentage- I doubt it, but if you have a sound source with figures on that I stand corrected. As far as I know only a very small percentage of obesity is caused by medical conditions such as your condition. But for the majority of people this just not apply. As for people with an unrelated condition that prevents them from doing exercise- if you have a health diet and do at least some form of exercise, a 15 minute walk for example, that should already be sufficient.

Thanks for your contribution. I'm glad the first response to the ugly rhetoric here is to laugh at "friends of fat "girls" who think you're a bigot. Love me, love me, I'm a liberal indeed.
it is actually not me that is even oppressed in the conversation, it is the woman. As a man I am expected to be up to bang anything that has two legs, and if a girl is willing, and I don't want to, it is seen that there is something horrifically wrong with the girl. Truth is, there isn't, I'm just not attracted to her, or I had a headache, or I just wanted to sleep.

Meanwhile if the shoe is on the other foot, if a woman rejects me, there is nothing wrong with me, my friends give me a high five for the attempt, because society says women's sexual nature is reserved.
See what I'm talking about, I keep it in my pants so I'm a bigot.

"The role of genetics
However, surprisingly, data from adopted twin studies indicate that in the United States, about 80% of the variation in body weight is determined by genes. Again, that's about the same degree of heritability as a characteristic such as height, and much greater than that for other conditions that we now clearly regard as running in families, including breast cancer, schizophrenia and heart disease. Yet, we don't typically call a heart disease sufferer a weak-willed loser."

"According to the Journal, a CDC document "concluded that the mathematical errors may have inflated the study's death toll by about 80,000 fatalities, or 20% of the total deaths."

From wikipedia's page on obesity. Please not not only the various medical conditions that lead to obesity, but also the medications linked to it as well.

Medical and psychiatric illness
Certain physical and mental illnesses and the pharmaceutical substances used to treat them can increase risk of obesity. Medical illnesses that increase obesity risk include several rare genetic syndromes (listed above) as well as some congenital or acquired conditions: hypothyroidism, Cushing's syndrome, growth hormone deficiency,[105] and the eating disorders: binge eating disorder and night eating syndrome.[2] However, obesity is not regarded as a psychiatric disorder, and therefore is not listed in the DSM-IVR as a psychiatric illness.[106] The risk of overweight and obesity is higher in patients with psychiatric disorders than in persons without psychiatric disorders.[107]

Certain medications may cause weight gain or changes in body composition; these include insulin, sulfonylureas, thiazolidinediones, atypical antipsychotics, antidepressants, steroids, certain anticonvulsants (phenytoin and valproate), pizotifen, and some forms of hormonal contraception.[2]

It is very hard for people to control their weight. Sure you can be really disciplined and force yourself to keep you calorie count down, and you can exercise (which really makes you more hungry). But how long is that sustainable for? Skinny people aren't skinny because they are disciplined. Most skinny people don't get that hungry. This is why after people lose weight they almost always put it back on. We're preprogrammed to store fat. But for some that preprogramming means they store more fat, which under certain conditions (our caveman ancestors for example) can be an evolutionary advantage. But not in the modern world.

Oh, and for a *huge* irony... Many type-II adult onset diabetics discovered they were a diabetic when they shifted *to* a helthier diet. Trying to eat a lot more fruits and veggies actually increases ones blood sugar over the fats and proteins in meats. I started eating more fruit and laid off the meats tryuign to lose weight and it worked a bit, but then my blood sugar went through the roof and my diabetes was triggered. You know that fad grapefruit diet? Major contributor to adult onset diabetes.

For type I diabetics like juvenile diabetes, insulin is one of the drugs that contributes to diabetes.

In short, while the majority of people could do with better diet and more exercise, telling everyone to get off their buts and exercise and eat healthier is an insult to those who are trying. Trying to lose weight is a vicious cycle. You may want and may try to lose weight but society conspires against you, making you feel down about yourself which contributes to an unhealthy malaise and depression which spirals into more weight *gain*.

If, instead of the negative shit us overweight people get from all around us, we got positive reinforcement and encouragement, we might be of a better mindset and be able to have the will to exercise and work towards a healthier lifestyle, whether we are overweight due to thenormal diet/exercise issues or due to other medical conditions.

I do not doubt that there is a genetic component to obesity. Ever increasing rates in many world countries also point to the important influence of the environment in this matter. Fast food anyone?

The argument about how obesity does not necessarily dictate ill health is of course true. It does, however, predict ill health. An analogous argument is well founded for smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, as we all know. Those who pretend otherwise are in denial.
Draugnar (0 DX)
07 Dec 11 UTC
The key is it is a potential effect, not a cause, of ill health. As you say, a predictor, not dictating it. But extreme anorexia also predicts ill health, and the current BMI is bullshit for judging that standard. The best standfard is to see how your heart and lungs are functioning based on your current body condition. If BP and pulse are high and you breath harder than normal under a stress test, then you are unhealthy. But BMI is not that indicator or every member of the offensive line on every NFL team is seriously out of shape and unhealthy.

Genetics can only explain a negligible percentage of obesity, Putin. It also wouldn't make much sense as our genes really have not changed that much over the past decades, while obesity rates have increased substantially. I didn't read all your news paper articles but this source tell me that genes account for a minimal percentage of obesity risk. http://www.ajcn.org/content/91/1/184.full. No matter how you look at it, it's just a condition sparked by capitalism, something you I imagine must be able to appreciate. http://healthculturesociety.wikispaces.com/Obesity+is+a+Capitalist+Disease

@ Draugnar- don't get me wrong, I realize there are people who cannot help their obesity, although that's only a small percentage. It's sad these people are put down by society, and I can imagine you'd start to feel insulted at some point. However, my comments are aimed at the majority of people who are in a position to do something about their weight, the ones who do not have a medical condition or 'bad genes'. The vast majority of people with obesity is simply obese because of a complacent attitude- grabbing a burger at a fast-food place rather than cooking at home, watching some show on TV instead of exercising for 30 minutes, taking the car instead of walking 10 minutes to the supermarket.. that's what needs to change. I'm sure you agree with that.

Draugnar (0 DX)

@Mr_rb - No, I don't. You attribute a mental attitude about which you know *nothing*. Society has beat the obese into the ground so bad that they feel they are worhtless. They don't deserve love or self-esteem. And your attitude contributes to that lack of self-esteem. Unfortunately, yours is the majority attitude and it keeps the obese person trapped in a cycle form which they cannot escape because society more or less says "you are worthless unless you get skinny and you have no will powert to get skinny" instead of syaing "you mean something to us and we want you withus for a long time, so let us help you feel better physically."

There is no doubt that obesity is strongly influenced by environmental factors. The prevalence of obesity increases so rapidly in many populations that the changes cannot be attributed to changes in genetic inheritance.1 There are differences in prevalence between populations and between various groups within populations; these differences are closely associated with environmental factors, especially social and behavioural factors.1 The degree of an individual's obesity can be modified by interventions that alter a person's energy intake or energy expenditure.1 However, there is no doubt that obesity is also influenced by genetics.

On diabetes, do obese people get it or does it make people obese? Chicken and egg would be a possible response, but I am afraid that I think that it is mainly the former.

Well, capitalism certainly makes billions in profits out of self-loathing caused by a marketing bombardment against fatness. Look at the diet industry.
Mr_rb (594 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
@Draugnar- in that respect we disagree. I believe every person is responsible for his own actions. You blame society for the fact that people don't put in the effort to lose weight, because they're not encouraged or motivated, because the overall attitude is that obesity is not a favourable attribute. Instead of looking for things to blame perhaps people who are in the position to do something about their obesity should stop pointing fingers and put in the effort to make that change. Most people are not trapped in a cycle from which they cannot escape at all, but instead of proving society wrong they'll continue in their usual pattern saying "society doesn't want us, what's the point, we can't make this happen if we aren't supported".
Mr_rb (594 D)
07 Dec 11 UTC
I'm sorry if I offend you Draugnar, but I simply don't believe in the whole 'blame the world' excuse that's used for just about anything these days. If someone wants to change they just need to make it happen themselves, and not wait around for someone else or a change in attitude from the general public.
