Community Reinvestment Act
If you do not know about this act, first passed in 1977 during the Carter administration and updated significantly during the Clinton adminstration, you should because it has had enormous impact on the United States.

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Dawkins, Hitchens, and The New Atheists Get Heir Turn
I'm going to try something different with this week's go-around, as I think a few people believe me to be overly-agressive in pushing my opinions and also because this is a topic I've put off doing for a while now, as not a fan of the New Atheist movement, but not knowledgable enough about the particulars to try and tackle it. So, I aim to be more the receiver here, and I ask two questions, both inside--and I'll get my education from you all. ;)

@abgemacht; the feature was added (or at least added now) due to the delicate sensitivities of someone who was offended in a game. Despite it being a bit frivolous in this case I think it's reasonable that someone might not want to receive messages from someone continually harassing them in-game, and would rather only get the new-message notification when they receive a message from someone who they want to communicate with

I think it'll put a limit on how blatantly offensive someone can be, give people a way to opt-in or opt-out of harassment as they see fit, and take mods out of the "what is free speech"/"what is offensive" debate once and for all. Beyond that I don't think it'll have much effect (I think most people want to hear from people even if they dislike them)

@kestasjk of course some people are sensitive but we're not little kids who cry when people say mean things, you just have to take it as most get agressive when the game isn't going their way.

some messages that you might have missed

"M" to "D" you're a pissy gayboy
"D" to "M" fuck off you fucking fucktard
"O" to everybody - blah, blah, blah, Hamlet, blah, blah, blah, blahdy blah more Hamlet lots more blahs taking up whole page etc, etc
Mod to "M" I'm sorry but I'm going to have to rule against you on this occassion

If anyone sees this post please cut and paste to your status.

Good tool Kestas which I hope never to use but good idea none the less. Pity that it appears necessary and people couldn't be nice to one another without this tool. It will be interesting to see if those who were harasses use the mute button or actually liked the attention.

Very nice. "can't we all just get along" or "grow a set of stones" is all fine and good, but there's no reason we can't have a tool to moderate harassment.

Thanks, Kestas
By the way, Kestas... how quickly did this take for you to whip up? The topic you originally posted in regarding the update only spawned a few hours if that before the mute feature came out. The implementation took about 10-15 minutes tops. I'm no computer guy but that sounds like a rather quick piece of work, especially since, as noted above, the feature has been tested and found to work without error. Kudos!

Thanks for this Kestas, even though I know you hate writing "anti-dumbass code". It'll be a good feature. (And I figured that, about the mods, I was just giving you a hard time/joking.)

@PE: How can you tell if someone has muted you?

No problem, if it takes some pressure off the mod team Ill be glad :)

First bug: The HTML tag that tells the browser where to jump to when you open a thread will jump way too far if you have a user hidden that has posted in the thread you're opening.

Not sure if there's a decent fix to this though. I'd assume the hiding people is being done client side, and the tags are rendered server side.

Agreed with those who say there shouldn't be an option to mute a country in-game..

immature people will just say "forget we have nothing to talk about I'm muting you"

then you're powerless to persuade them of anything. the best diplomacy is done when speaking to someone who previously hated you. but if they've muted you... well...

Otherwise thanks and good job, I just don't agree with the option to mute countries in games.
jmo1121109 (3812 D)
02 Jul 11 UTC
Agreed, on the forum this option is gold, but I agree you should not be able to mute another country in-game. Quick question though, if you have muted a player and you end up in an anonymous game with them will you be able to see their messages to you in-game?

On muting countries...

The reason to do so is if someone is harassing you in-game. I think this is valid.

The concern is that new players will do so just when they are stabbed and upset, not realizing that there is still good reason to diplome with that country.

I think the country mute SHOULD be there, but maybe there could be a pop up window that asks if you really want to do it and explains that it should really be used in cases of harassment and how you should continuing talking with someone that has stabbed you etc...

My 2 cents.

But thanks Kestas, a very nice feature to have.
☺: In context of a game (because killer did this OVER AND OVER AND OVER asdf), if you try to message someone you get a return message saying something like "You cannot message this person because this person has muted you." I assume it's the same for PMs.

Kids...
I hate the way that they get really quiet when you're putting in your diplomacy moves and when you get up to check on them (because quiet kids are synonymous with kids getting into trouble) and you find them throwing things into the toilet.

Yesterday I woke up after hearing the kids play in their room at 5:30 to find that one of them took off their diaper and thought it was a novel idea to do various things with their poop and top it off by peeing on his crib.

I joined a gunboat game in place of a cheater who was banned in S01. The message saying the cheater was banned can't be read, so I get the notification at the top. My OCD senses are tingling. Is there any recourse for this interesting situation?
