Actually, I don't think his old account is even banned. It still reflects points on it and banned accounts usually have no points.

@Draugnar - could you re-read the rules? I think you are supposed to report multi-accounters by email and not mention it in the forum. Note the wording 'report' a multi. You were reporting a multi and should have used the proper channels, the fact that he had admitted the crime doesn't matter, report it properly. I don't really agree with this rule and have argued against it, but whilst it is a rule I will stick to it and expect you to too.

For the fucktards who seem to insist there is nothing wrong with having a second account so long as they don't play together, this is from the Site Rules. Please note the "under any circumstances".

You know the procedure for reporting multiaccounts. If you had an issue, you should have reported it to us via email. If you try this again, I will be docking points.

To everyone: It is *not* OK to create a new account to purge your record. However, I don't know when this particular player did so. It may have been a long time ago. Also, although, making a new account is bad, actively multiaccounting is still worse. We're looking into it.

@abgemacht - "We're looking into it" Really even though you haven't yet received an email (presumably) - do I take it that we can now post reports here as they seem to be acted on quicker?

@Draugnar - You seem not to have addressed the main point. ie not to post reports here, do you now agree that you shouldn't have done what you have done or do you disagree with my understanding of the rules?

@abge - True, I don't know that he didn't talk to you. But I would like to point out that I was under the impression we were allowed to name and shame when it was a known fact and not an accusation. But I will think before posting next time.

Oh, and the threat of docking points means little to me. I don't play for points, only GR and overall record and you can't alter either of those. Feel free to dock 'em. I don't really care. :-)

@Maniac - I was typing that up when yours came in. I have reread the rules and agree I should have emailed the mods. But I think this has resulted in a good conversation that has made it clear that even multi-ing because of some claimed "lost password" (a bogus reason as there is a link on the rules page to the forgot password page) is still multi-accounting and against the rules.

And, Maniac, I think the fact that the player in question stated he had a second account mat have allowed them the leeway to look into it without my having sent the email. Had it just been an accusation with no cooberating proof via the player's own confession, I think they would have made me send an email.

The mods most certainly can find out if you have more than one account. If you do, I'd suggest you email the mods disclosing such a fact before we find out on our own.

@abge - was my initial post (in the other thread) suggesting he email you all about the dual accounts OK? It was intended to be friendly/helpful to him.

@Maniac - I can't speak for the others but I always take the oldest case in the mod account.
I have been known to tell people to shut up here and then just put it in the pile to be dealt with whenever suitable.

I very nearly didn't open this, but still had seen an accusation of a player made by an established member of the community. I will freely admit I believed you when I saw it, because you've got a reputation for being [mostly] reliable. Now I have the ability to check such things, but not everyone does.

Yes he has more than one account, so *technically* what you say is correct. However, there is a massive difference between someone who is outright cheating and one who has made a second account because they couldn't get into their previous. Now if you feel he's trying to hide a record, this that is slightly different, but its still not as bad as someone who enters two accounts to double-team you!

@figle - I agree. And, as I said, I will not do it again. And it wasn't the threat of point docking, but a rereading of the rules that made me decide even before abgemacht's chastisement that I was wrong. Maniac gets the credit for that. But I would argue that trying to reset one's crappy record is still cheating. Whether I steal $600 or $600 million, I'm still a thief (Die Hard was on a couple of times this past week for those of you wondering why I chose those number :-) ). And cheating should be treated accordingly no matter what the reason. I believe in justice tempered with mercy, but overt actions with intent to deceive like this don't deserve to be rewarded by letting the new account stand and banning the old. Let him continue and send him his password to the emails listed on both accounts. Then ban the new one.

I would add that I do not know if he did it to clear his record, I haven't looked into the situation enough to build a judgement, but do know that this has happened several times before by complete accident. I've spoken to someone before who didn't know their username/email OR password. Why? Because they'd made it a year or so before, and at the time didn't have a web persona to use, so just made up a name. The email address similarly. I found the account, but only because I knew I'd played with them before, and knew the game. Without that link I'd have had no chance.
I know my story is true because it happened to a friend I know in real life.

Yes, accordingly. That is why I didn't suggest banning both accounts like a multi who plays games with himself should have done. But I also don't think this is a situation where he should be allowed to keep the new account. If it were just win/loss records, I'd have less concern. But this individual has a clear pattern of quitting games. We should all be able to see that and allowing them to reset *that* stat is harmful to the community. Sure, he will just start CDing again, but that will result in damaged games that may never have had him in them as many people, like myself, check out CD records before passing out passwords to private games.
