Canada/US Union
As per the North American Union thread. If it were to happen how would you want it to happen? I am a Canadian, but I really like the US, so I would be in favour of this merger - under certain conditions.

WebDiplomacy Ethics
So lately on the forum things have been getting a little heated. The Michael Vick thread got a bit personal, and the thread about Conspiracies crossed every possible line. I think we need to establish a set of rules for use both in-game and in the forum to ensure that WebDip keeps a certain level of class.

Veterans/Armistice Day
On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month, the guns fell silent. Our forebears thought they would be silent forever. Despite the failure of universal peace, it is the thing that all decent people, Civilian, Soldier, Sailor, Marine, and Airman alike should all aspire to.

statistics
One cool thing about Richard Sharp's book The Game of Diplomacy (http://www.diplom.org/~diparch/god.htm) is his frequent use of statistics: he refers to how many British and American postal games have been played and how many games each power won, how often each power was eliminated (even how often they were eliminated by a certain year); which countries tend to do well when which other countries do well; etc. Has anything like that been attempted for WebDiplomacy? How hard would it be?

Do you have stairs in your house?

I have 3 flights of stairs... tall house. Nothing like a tower though. It's adjacent to other houses. I wouldn't mind having this many stairs if I lived in a tower... Anyway, climbing stairs is good for your heart.

Am I the frist one to be on topic?

so the pusher bots would have no trouble killing Avenor, but the Daleks would have some problems geting to you... unless they can fly. Am i still following the topic??
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Nov 10 UTC
Well original Daleks would be stuck, but new Daleks would just float up to the top. For the non-Whovians (most of the US), it's like Star Wars trilogy R2D2 versus prequel R2D2.
akilies (861 D)

new daleks, how new cause i feel like they have flown before, back when the cyber men were "here"
Draugnar (0 DX)

New as in the last three Doctors. Old as in all the Doctors prior. Yes there was a long line of Doctors prior.

lolol Thanks for putting it into terms I can understand!

I really, really hated the oldest of the new doctors. I'm glad he only lasted like half a season.
akilies (861 D)
17 Nov 10 UTC
Yes draug I know there has been a long line of doctors, and I have watched many episodes, just confused on when exactly daleks could fly.

Nothing beats the head dalek though :)

Tom Baker is the Doctor to end all Doctors, the others are but pale shadows of his greatness
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Nov 10 UTC
It would actually appear they hovered in Revalation of the Daleks during Colin Baker's run as the Sixth Doctor. A quick wikipedia search found that.
Jack_Klein (897 D)

Dalek's have no need of stairs. Real Dalek's just level the house.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Nov 10 UTC
That would be a great series of books. Kind of like "Real Men Don't Eat Quiche".

Real Dalek's Just Level the House.

Think of some for Cybermen and the other Doctor Who baddies...
figlesquidge (2131 D)
17 Nov 10 UTC
@Abge - Christopher Eccleston wasn't that bad. Agreed not really suited to Dr Who, but he's done some good stuff. Appears in strange places as well - he was in Heroes :/
@Draug - Was going to say, they fly in some of the old ones.

@topic - You know how some staircases turn corners etc? How big does the 'pause' bit before they go on up have to be for them to count as two staircases?
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
17 Nov 10 UTC
@figle

Yeah, I'm not saying he's a bad actor, just a bad cast for the Doctor.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

You mean the landing?
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Nov 10 UTC
@topic. What about a spiral staircase? Is each stair a separate one as you are constantly turning? I would assume my central staircase which does a 180 turn in the middle to get to the basement is still one staircase, especially as their is a step in the middle of the turn/landing (be careful carrying stuff up and down it or you'll trip on that step).

@figle - I liked Eccleston's darker, almost sadistic, Doctor. Revenge suited him well. Of course, I liked Colin Baker's 6th Doctor as well. And the idea that Rose saved him (Eccleston's Doctor) and brought him back from the edge after the Time War... Simply brilliant.
Jack_Klein (897 D)

I actually liked Eccleston. After re-watching most of the new series, I think Tennant was almost too human. I liked that Matt Smith's Doctor's reaction to being kissed by Amy wasn't "This is inappropriate because you're young, etc" but "But... you're human!"

He's an alien, and Eccleston and Smith seem to capture that a lot better than Tennant.

Not that Tennant was by any means bad. But the constant semi-relationship stuff was not quite to my taste... mostly because Doctor/Rose shippers are one of the more annoying fan groupings out there.

There was a bit of art done a few years back featuring all the women that traveled with the Doctor, I looked briefly for it, but I couldn't find a link.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Nov 10 UTC
One thing I like about Tennant's time was that the companions were constantly changing. From Rose to Martha to Donna, we got a whole gambit of personalities in his companions.

A: It's the show people who like Star Trek make fun of.
Draugnar (0 DX)

Hey now. I like Doctor Who *and* Star Trek. Thems fytin wurds pastoralan. :-)
figlesquidge (2131 D)
17 Nov 10 UTC
@Draug - and I 'hear' this weeks Chuck had a lovely little tribute to Trek as well.

@Topic - I don't mean that. I basically mean, how big does a landing have to be for it to split the flight into two staircases.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Nov 10 UTC
@fig, yeah it was funny. I so love that show. Of course, any show where Yvonne Strahovski prances around at least once each episode in lingerie can't be all bad.
Draugnar (0 DX)
17 Nov 10 UTC
@fig on the topic - I think it's more about the total height. 13 steps is a standard single flight in a home. More like 21 in an office building with the taller floors. Also, it would depend on if the landing had access to exit the stair well.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
17 Nov 10 UTC
I think its got to have access to at least two rooms to count as a landing and thus break the flight.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
17 Nov 10 UTC
This week's Chuck also brought Adam Baldwin and Summer Glau back together.

On the other hand, Chuck is really pimping products. Which makes sense since I always record and skip commercials. But even Summer Glau being on the show was to advertise her new show that starts in January.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
17 Nov 10 UTC
I think it has to do with function. If the landing has any real function, then it separates two stairways, if large enough. But if you usually go from the bottom of one to the top of the other, passing the landing, then functionally it is one stairway.
figlesquidge (2131 D)
18 Nov 10 UTC
Don't think she was there for marketing purposes. Chuck has a habit of bringing in guest stars that have worked with its principals in the past, and she had quite a prominent character arc (for a single episode side-character). That said, yes the subway stuff is really obvious, although I do find them rather amusing.
disclaimer: This is all hearsay from a friend of mine living in the US
Draugnar (0 DX)

But the best Chuck ever was Chuck Versus Tom Sawyer. Simply more awesome than even Captain Awesome!
figlesquidge (2131 D)

I hope you're joking :S First fight's got to be up there, although end of S2 was pretty darn good (although not as a standalone admittedly)

Yeah but CvTS (s2e5) had one of the most brutally violent fights with Sarah kicking several guys asses and not holding back. Plus, it had Missile Command and Tom Sawyer, dude!

North American Union, good or bad idea?
Am I the only American whom actually thinks a union of North America is a great idea? Most of my fellow Americans seem to think it's the stuff of radicals or a vast conspiracy, but I'd love to see it happen.
