Dr. Hackenbush or: How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Look On The Bright Side of Life
I love philosophy/literature, sports, Trek, and comedy, and as I've already done threads on two (three) two of my three favorite things (four favorite things) four favorite things, it's time to do the third thing (fourth thing) foruth thing and pay homage to The Top Comedies Of All-Time! (So, nominate away (3 per person and has to be an original film, ie, no Shakespeare or Greek comedies) and when we get enough, say, 20 (or 42?) we'll vote for the Best Comedy Film Ever!

CDs taken over by bots
There are quite a few decent algorithms out there for playing Diplomacy. Sure, they do not negotiate, but they do make decent choices based on the situation. Why not implement one of them so when a player goes CD, such bot simply takes over the country, until another player steps in?

wtf?
we all know that news is more entertainment than current events, and everything has a spin. Lately though, I've been feeling like I'm living inside a reality TV show or something. Everythings 'gone pear shaped'.

Does anybody know what I'm talking about?

Anyone want to give an impression of another member of the site? Could be amusing...
Rules:
1. Not every post can be taking the piss out of obiwan, Draugnar and hellalt.
2. Please keep it fun. It is one thing to poke fun, quite another to be downright rude and offensive. Also, if a member asks you to stop impersonating them, do so.

wow thread 377677

brings back memories.

An anarchist political party is still the stupidest thing I've ever heard of thucy (unless you count political parties)
Thucydides (864 D(B))
17 Sep 10 UTC
no it is a very good idea.. i hold to that.

at least, let me put it this way: it's your best hope of achieving what you want, barring a deus ex machina

such as an asteroid impact.

lol. that's just what i think
Sicarius (673 D)
17 Sep 10 UTC
What I've been thinking about alot in terms of goals is scale. Maybe I'll get exactly what I want.
I can already tell this is going to turn into an argument about anarchism.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
17 Sep 10 UTC
So you don't want the whole world to turn anarchist anymore?

I mean... in some ways you already have your wish if you just want it to exist *somewhere.*

People often crassly joke that "if you hate gov't so much you should go to Somalia, they don't have a gov't there."

And although that is wildly insensitive... lol, there is a grain of truth, in that there are places on earth that essentially have no government influence.

Especially places deep in the wilderness. The truth of the matter is that for all our talk, mankind has not really mastered the planet earth at all. There are vast vast swathes that go unnoticed, untouched, uninhabited, and uncontrolled, whatever nations claim to have "sovereignty" over it.

So you could always head out there. Your place on the no-fly list makes that problematic... but there are always ships.

So.. off the top of my head, good places to start an anarchist region:

Siberia.
Portions of Africa, particularly in the interior.
Places in Oceania, esp. Indonesia.
Mountainous regions, esp. in South Asia and the Caucasus region, as well as Central Asia
The extreme north of Scandinavia, or Iceland, though living conditions would be harsh (could always live with natives)
On the same note you could do similar things with the Inuit in Canada.
Then there is the American West.. some parts anyway.
The forests and such around the Dakotas.
Interior of Mexico
Remote places on Caribbean Islands
And rain forests in South America.

Oh and the Outback in Australia.

Lol.

So... good luck with that. There is also Tibet and Nepal and jungle in SE Asia.

And for the record.... I'm not making fun of you.

@Thucy: I'm not an anarchist any more. I am a socialist with anarchist sympathies. I want socialism, but I do think that if anarchy could work it would be the best system. However I don't know if it would work.
Thucydides (864 D(B))

wasn't talking to you CM... lol. was talking to Sic.

But I mean.. you can always start a political party too
hellalt (70 D)

Sicarius (673 D)

It;s much less "what I want" than "what I can do
Thucydides (864 D(B))

So you don't think committing yourself to a goal that will take longer than your lifetime to achieve is ever worthwhile?

If I commit myself to eliminating poverty, does that make me a fool just because I know I can't do it in my lifetime? Perhaps you think so, but I beg to differ.
Ursa (1617 D)

Thucy, you troll, why this topic to drag up the past?

Sorry. I know this question might appear noobish but I've never asked, what does a troll mean in the context of forums?
Thucydides (864 D(B))
20 Sep 10 UTC
Oh yeah, and back to anarchy, Sic, do you think you would have associated yourself with the anarchists of circa 1900 had you been alive?

think fishing, not monsters from Harry Potter. When you're trolling you have your hook in the water and you are waiting for a fish to bite.

Or think "answer my question and you can pass" troll from the fairy tales. Only they are persistent that you answer their question or they'll just keep asking it over and over until someone gives them the gratification of responding.
Mafialligator (239 D)

Maybe this is a dumb question, but does TMW really qualify as a troll? I mean, clearly he likes attention, and he lied about his identity, but when he discusses his political views, I'm pretty sure he is being sincere. That is pretty trollish I guess, but compared to mapleleaf for instance, it seems pretty tame.
mapleleaf (0 DX)

So sayeth the misandrist.

Keep mentioning me, cupcake, I absolutely hate it.
LOL.
Mafialligator (239 D)
20 Sep 10 UTC
Well you are the most obnoxious jerk on the forums. You seemed like the best example of a real troll, compared to the semi-sincere teenage antics of TMW.
Ursa (1617 D)
20 Sep 10 UTC
@ Thucy: talk about the past for all you want. But it seems to me you only made this topic to make fun of TMW/Diplofool. The people who remember him, remember him. The rest do not need to know. As a monkey throwing with feces it seems you want to besmirch TMWs reputation.
Draugnar (0 DX)
20 Sep 10 UTC
Then he was. In fact his trolling and then the forum bomb is what got him banned. But he has been a lot better since coming back as TMW. But once in a while...
Mafialligator (239 D)

Ah, fair enough.

Hey, I also just learned the genesis of the "someone +/- 1" thing. Good to know.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
20 Sep 10 UTC
Lol yeah I stumbled on that too philcore, while looking through the old threads.

Someone, a long time ago, even posted a thread link to Chrisp asking how to enter orders or somesuch... lol.

Anyway no I didn't do this just to make fun of him.. I did it to clear up my confusion once and for all. And now I know. And now I'm having fun reminiscing. Sorry to have offended what seems to be so many of you... I assure you it was unintentional.

Even TMW seems to have responded fairly coolly to this thread.. so I don't know what the big deal is.
Thucydides (864 D(B))
20 Sep 10 UTC
Also I avoid the term troll as much as possible. I try not to categorically refer to anyone as a troll... because that term barely means anything anymore. Everyone is a "troll" in some way, to someone, so it doesn't mean a whole lot to me.

To me there are "annoying people" "rude people" and "reasonable people"

There also "the noobs" but they don't count as people :P

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: Causality, Divinity, and Free Will (To Power!) ;)
OK, so a bit of a hiatus after that GREAT Philosopher Knockout Contest (congrats to Plato, Seneca, Kant and Locke for being selected as the Rushmore of Philosophy...I'm sure they're honored.) ;) Anyway, fresh from my Philosophy of Religion class to the WebDip forums: Does causality prevent free will (at least as we conventionally think of it), would a deity do so...and just how free CAN mankind be? If there is no/limited free will, is morality a farce?
