At one point in my company, there was a massive lay-off. I had been recently (2 months earlier) given a full time job (I was an intern for a year).
In my sector, of 7 employees + 1 manager, 2 employees were laid off.
There was, however, an agreement by wich you could receive more cash than your severance money if you agreed to resign, it was called an early retirement or something.
Of the two guys who got laid off, one guy ,Nestor, was quick to negotiate a higher payout, and went home without a trouble.
The other, Onofrio, wanted to keep his job at all costs. He was bounced around for days between HR and our manager and whomever would listen to him that his job was really important and no one else could do it.
At the end, he had no choice, he either negotiated a resign or he was sent a telegram (the official way of notifying someone you've fired them).
The guy was really upset, to the verge of tears. He left for lunch, and my boss, the manager, comes up to me and says "You should ask Onofrio to teach you what he does before he leaves."
I was so shocked I couldn't say a word, just nodded. Obviously, I didn't ask him, and I did what I could to keep things going after he was gone... But what a nerve.
