The Westboro Baptist Church... America, is THIS what you want the World to see us As???
They say kill fags (thier word, not mine.) They say screw Jews. Blacks, non-whites, non-Christians, Christians who don't believe what they do... they say 9/11 was good for America, they stomp on our flag.

They say all this... and I'm disgusted at every last word of it. You?

These people have a right to protest as they do. They're awful people, but we shouldn't change our way of life just because some crazy Calvinists abuse the freedoms we have in this country. Live with it.

So let me get this straight, The_Master_Warrior, you would rather we bombed Iraq into oblivion and then left without any regard for the future of the nation? That we destroyed the entire infrastructure and let the people to fend for themselves and live in anarchy? That we all but handed Iraq to Iran and gave this committed enemy of the United States a huge and easy propaganda win and increased dominance in the Persian Gulf?

You're stupid. Whatever the rational for the war, it would have been impossible to pull out after a mere three months in even the best of circumstances. Iraq's not Grenada.

And you'd rather the US become more involved in the war which actually is a quagmire? Relatively speaking, Iraq is a pretty developed country with a civic culture, a decently strong sense of national unity (we can obviously see that straight-up sectionalism is on the downturn there), has a middle class, and has the oil resources to make it economically viable. In the long run Iraq will be OK.

Afghanistan on the other hand is pretty much a wasteland full of petty tribal warlords and no sense of unity past the clan. Afghanistan has always been in the crapper and always will be in the crapper. You might be able to get a moderate government in Iraq (eventually you'll certainly get a stable on), but you'll never have either in Afghanistan. It was a mistake to try and do anything besides attack al Quedauauada and the Taliban there. We never ought to have tried nation building there, since there isn't a nation to build.

Alexander the Great tried to make Afghanistan a stable country. The Persians tried to make Afghanistan a stable country. The British tried to make Afghanistan a stable country. The Soviets tried to make Afghanistan a stable country. They all failed. We need to shift our focus or we'll fail just like them.

Cold blooded as it sounds this strategy would have had some merits. Iraq was never going to be like Japan or Germany, a vanquished enemy who would then rise from the ashes as a democracy and an economic power and America best friend and loyal ally.

It's true that arguing for going into Afghanistan is impossible by purely practical rationale. However I still believe that (unlike under Saddam) things under the Taliban were bad enough that one can easily argue a moral responsibility for taking them out.

Iraq's another story of course, and one that unfortunately no one can undo. I expect in time somebody else will come along that can unite the country. Unfortunately that will probably be someone very like Saddam- but providing he remembers who his friends are it should work out OK.

I think you guys digress from the point of the thread. I think religion, which tends to drift towards fanaticism at times, needs to be kept in check or stuff like this will happen. They have a right to free speech though according to the Constitution.
zckls04 (100 D)
26 Nov 09 UTC
If anyone took them seriously I'd be more concerned but it's a tiny church consisting of pretty much one family. It's the people who cloak their religious hatred with a veneer of respectability that you have to worry about. They're not worth sacrificing free speech for.

"I like to think that my interests are a little more high-brow than the rantings of American religious zealots.

You guys "elected" Georgie-Porgie.

Twice.

Get over yourselves.

Everybody else has(except for the poor people that your nation continues to murder)."

What a cogent and sane argument! No inferiority complex there, hm?

Don't argue with the insane. Just nod and maybe he'll go away.
Let's keep in mind that Iraq didn't attack America. Whilst it looked upon terrorism with sympathy, it probably did nothing more beyond that. Hussein was too busy bullying the poor Kurds. Afghanistan, on the other hand, killed 3,000 Americans.
Also, America has the most powerful military in the world with excellent intelligence to back it up. None of which Alexander, the Persians, the British, or the Soviets had.

@White Sammy:

That made my day, it really did... that British guy is my hero lol...

@Nostradumass:

Exactly, thank you; granted Bush screwed the pooch as it were as President, and it sucks we had him twice, but come on- not ALL OF US voted for him.

And anyway, even as a Democrat I know there've been FAR worse Presidents and people than Bush... at least he's a funny family guy, just can't run a nation very well (though to his credit in the months after 9/11 he WAS superb, and his speech from Ground Zero right after the attacks was probably his high moment, the only time he spoke he really sounded good and in command, like a great leader, so for that, at least, kudos where it's due.)
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
26 Nov 09 UTC
@The Master Warrior:

Really? :/

America DOES have the best military in the world, but you're REALLY saying we're smarter and more capable than Alexander, the British at their height, the Soviets at their height...

Come on- the call him Alexander THE GREAT for a reason- conquered more than anyone else and NEVER LOST.

I think that he's just as "smart" and most likely more so (no, sorry, DEFINITELY more so) than our military leaders today.

Washington, Grant, Lee (for the South) Roosevelt in Cuba, Eisenhower, MacArthur, Patton, Schwartzkoff (probably spelled wrong):

THOSE are our great military leaders... Lincoln and DR our great wartime Presidents

No leader we have today compares to those legends... hell, three out of those four (Washington, Lincoln, TR) are considered not only our greatest during war, but our greatest leaders/Presidents EVER, and are engraved in a mountain for all time...

THAT's greatness... and we don't have someone like that today, sorry, not that they're bad, but they're not like THAT.

SSReichsFuhrer (145 D)
26 Nov 09 UTC
If you read the second and third letter of john in the bible he speaks of those who dress as sheep but are really wolves. he calls them antichrists. the antichrist is not a singke man who rules the world. its anybody who acts against jesus. those who say they are christians but are not. this church you talk about is not christian, and they are hurting christs name. Christ says God is Love. God wants us not to sin so we can enter heaven but only God can judge, we cannot. We thinking we have the right to judge was the first sin. Wanting to be God. Lets hope these people learn Gods real message. Vivo Christo Rey

Ummm...

SSReichsFuhrer, I get what you're saying, and I know the old saying "What's in a name?"

Still... as a Jew, gotta ask... "SSReichsFuhrer???"

The_Master_Warrior, the fact that the US is the strongest military in the world can't overcome the bedrock realities of a place like Afghanistan. There's no economy besides opium production there. There's no society beyond the village or at best the petty little ethnic group. There's a strong streak of really nutty Islam which rejects things like TV and keeps women as ninth-class citizens. You can't build a house on sand, and you can't have a working government in Afghanistan.

We were completely justified in invading Afghanistan and punishing those who attacked us and sided with those who attacked us. We went wrong when we decided to stay and try to impose some semblance of real government in a country which has never had one.
zckls04 (100 D)
26 Nov 09 UTC
Totally agree.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
26 Nov 09 UTC
I'd have to agree a bit too... we did have a right to go and get Bin Laden- and have we done that?

Have we even FOCUSED on that in the last few years?

We need to focus on THAT- not trying to be the world's police like the Romans and Soviets and British (sorry) all tried and failed at.
Acosmist (0 DX)
26 Nov 09 UTC
The Soviets did not try to be the world's police
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
26 Nov 09 UTC
Alright, you know what I mean...

And the Romans and Brits certainly did...
Acosmist (0 DX)
26 Nov 09 UTC
The Romans did a damn fine job of that, though.
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
26 Nov 09 UTC
Yeah, a great job, they just enslaved a bunch of people and had a dictatorship...

No, the Romans were actually alright, I mean, they ARE in many ways the start of Europe... and they were better conquerors than most in the ancient world, better even to the Jews... and slavery was common...

Still- as police, they ultimately failed... it's just not possible, not right for one nation to police the rest.

Remember a little state around 1939 that wanted to try that? What if they succeeed?

It's just not a good idea- we as a WORLD should rule ourselves someday (I'm a Trekker, I still hope someday mankind can come together like that) but not one country over the rest...
Acosmist (0 DX)
26 Nov 09 UTC
The Nazis wanted to police the world?

You keep saying false things. Maybe you don't know what "policing" is all about.

The one thing i liked about bush was that he stuck to his believes not matter what people thought about him and i dont think he did that for show either.

Also...obiwanobiwan...
Of im not mistaken i believe that that is an australian tv show
