if i have a long msg to type, i open up a Notepad and type it instead.

I think it happens when you hit the "BACK" key. Somehow, the browser interprets it as you want to go back to a previous visited webpage

Can you give me browser info etc, what you have to do to make this happen, what happens exactly? I'm not sure what you mean by changes to a different site in your address book
flashman (2274 D(G))

It happens to me with my MacBook, but that is because the touchpad system is so sensitive that almost any contact with part of a hand cause the system to do something.
cteno4 (100 D)

You're probably moving the cursor out of the text entry box (to prevent yourself from moving your typing to an earlier part of your message on accident, and then clicking outside the text box before hitting some key combination that sends you to a recently-viewed page (or to one of your favorites).
gjdip (1065 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
I've seen something similar; the focus will be moved from the text entry field to a different area in the window. I've never had the browser change to a different site, though. This started sometime in the last four weeks or so and so far I haven't tried a different browser (currently, I use Firefox 3.5.5). This happens frequently enough that it has occurred to me to switch browsers to see if that will solve the problem but then I never bother with it.

Never seems to happen when posting to the forum, only in-game messages. I've always been highly suspicious of that live clock ticking away in the corner.
alamothe (3367 D(B))

I'm afraid Kestas that the problem is connected to Plura. It used to happen for me at work where I had java enabled, but not at home where I didn't (now I've opted out :-( I use IE8. Specifically, when I load a page and the focus in is the message text field, after quickly typing a few characters the focus just escapes and then these letters are bound to various shortcuts in IE, so it starts opening favorites, add-ons and various other windows. It's really weird!

Third time it has happened on this post. I've started to get used to it but it is annoying. If it was actually causing the page to change that would really suck.

By the by, I do notice something going on in the status bar at the bottom of the browser, but it is too quick for me to read what it is saying.

I've had a similar problem as gjdip and Alderian. i use firefox as well, usually its not a problem as i get a PING noise when i continue typing but it doesnt continue typing inside the message box.
ottovanbis (150 DX)

I agree, I've had that happen too. It's weird, only happens for this site. Thought it was computer at first, guess not.
spyman (424 D(G))

This happens to me with IE8 especially. Not so much with Firefox.
ag7433 (927 D(S))

I use chrome and it happens. It's like the page finishes loading something - or refreshes - and removes the typing cursor so the next button is not for the chatbox but for the browser and will do all sorts of things pending on the keys pressed.

I'm using IE8 and this problem happens to me on a constant basis. This is my 3rd attempt to even post this message. It's worth mentioning that I do not recall this occuring previous to installing Windows 7.
gjdip (1065 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
I am using Windows XP so it's not related to a specific version of Windows.
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
It is happening to me at home using IE 8. Alderian's post above illustrates exactly what is happening in my experience too, but I am on IE 8, not Firefox. I just upgraded to IE 8 from IE 7 but for several days it was happening to me using IE7 as well.

You type for a few lines and then suddenly you no longer have a cursor. In IE 7 and IE 8, the focus sometimes moves to the command bar (or whatever it's called - the bit with File, Edit, View, Favourites and so on) such that if you keep typing, you end up accidentaly selecting commands from the drop-down menus.

This thread has actually re-assured me a lot. I thought there was something wrong with my laptop - but clearly this is affecting other people too.

What gives, Mr. Kestas?
Jamiet99uk (873 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
For further reference, I also log on at work using IE 6, and the problem is not happening there.
The same exact thing happens to me. I thought it was my sub-standard computer conking out on me.
When typing longer messages I'll copy it every so often. That way I'll only lose one or two sentences when that happens.
JECE (1248 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
You should also know that if a game progresses while you are typing, your message should also be lost. I just copy everything before I send presses. I also copy replies, such as this one. Sometimes, I will paste to Word if I think I may copy something else in the meantime or I want a better spell-check.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
30 Nov 09 UTC
Interesting, so is it just that focus is being taken away or are messages being lost somehow? Based on the first post it sounded like long messages were actually getting lost, but other posts just say the focus is lost so you might be typing into nothing for a moment?
gjdip (1065 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
Kestas, I think it depends on the browser and perhaps browser customization. IE users complain about losing messages because when you hit a key after the focus of the window is moved you may either trigger a hotkey for a bookmark or a menu command. With Firefox it just goes 'ding' every time you hit a key as the focus seems to be nowhere. Then you can click inside the text entry field and continue typing.
spyman (424 D(G))
30 Nov 09 UTC
I lose messages because my typing seems to activate back arrow - like I have pressed some keyboard short cut I didn't know about. That sort of thing anyway (it might not just be the back page arrow either - sometimes it navigates away from the page - not sure how).
Hibiskiss (631 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
I started losing focus recently but I am not sure exactly when.
Using the newest Firefox and Internet Explorer with Vista, happens with both every time a page loads or refreshes. Also happens randomly when typing and the java runs locally on my pc. Really sucks for live games.

I've lost a few messages lately but figured I changed an order without submitting or something and attributed the error to myself even though I thought I was being careful.
Hibiskiss (631 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
Wanted to chime in that if I am using Internet Explorer and it happens, I'm bound to hit some back shortcut which loses the message. Firefox just dings.

I never copy messages or write them in notepad before pasting them here (how lame and what a waste of time). Neither does the site bounce me back to my favorite site.

Kestas, I notice it happens when my message exceeds a certain length. About 1.5 to 2 lines of text almost always trigggers it . This has only been hapenning for about 2 weeks, it used to never happen at all
ag7433 (927 D(S))
30 Nov 09 UTC
kestas: Both -- it loses focus (often) and sometimes loses messages when posting mid-turn expiration (usually if I write a message after being away an hour and not refreshing first)
Draugnar (0 DX)

It's Plura. I really wish there were a better way for Kestas to fund the site than that piece of crap.

Never had a problem with it that I can recall.
Macrado (706 D)

Kestas, I've had this happen too. Occasionally, the page does some sort of processing, during which focus on the textbox is lost. The focus switches to the page itself, and so common shortcuts are applied... like the backspace key is a shortcut for pressing the "Back" button on your browser. Everyone not convinced, click on the whitespace outside of any textboxes, and press your backspace key. Come back here when you're finished :-)

I've been both taken to a page in my favorites, and also been hit many times by pressing the backspace key just as the textbox loses focus. This has happened to me on both IE7, and also on Firefox 3.0.15 (though more frequently on IE7). It tends to happen to me in games, not here on the forum.

For me every now and then it seems to think I really want to press ALT and go into the menus when typing a message. Some of the JS on the textarea must be screwed up.
djbent (2572 D(S))

i've had the same problem alderian and others mentioned - using firefox.
pootercannon (326 D)

Wanted to throw out there that I have never had this problem (knock on wood).

But I use Safari on a Mac. Both at work and at home.
kestasjk (64 DMod(P))
30 Nov 09 UTC
I've added some code that'll require you to confirm if you try to leave a page with a message longer than 10 letters, it also tries to keep focus on the textarea but it doesn't seem to be bulletproof at the moment
pootercannon (326 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
On a side note ... MadMarx, if what we've seen from your in-game press and messages is AFTER you've lost "SOOO many messages," I shudder to think how much your opponents would have to read if you didn't have this problem.
denis (864 D)

My Iphone does that it really helps cause then you don't accidentaly c lick anything
alamothe (3367 D(B))

Kestas, even username and password fields on the log in screen are losing focus. After turning off java the problem disappears, at least for me
figlesquidge (2131 D)
30 Nov 09 UTC
Might Draug be onto one there?
I haven't had this problem for a long time (obviously) but similar effects happen on other sites.
When the site is partially loaded, Firefox allows you to start entering data (as I believe do most other browsers?). However, when the page has fully rendered (for which the limiting factor will be Plura) I've found the browser seems to unfocus() everything. If this were to happen then continued typing could lead to shortcuts being run (as mentioned backspace moves to history(-1) ) changing the page?
Still, I don't think removing Plura is the way to go.

They say all this... and I'm disgusted at every last word of it. You?
