Saudi Arabia
My wife has been invited to speak at King Faisal Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and they're also willing to fly me there as well. Looking beyond the knee-jerk reaction that visiting the Middle East is unsafe for westerners, is there anyone here that has been there recently; and if so, how comfortable were you visiting/traveling there? I'm personally pretty damn exciting about the chance, but I don't want to wear either rose or black covered glasses (so to speak).

Dog-gone Funny Tails
I love my aquarium fish- and I love dogs, too, and am happy to report I'm (the family is) getting two new Shih-Tzu puppies, two brothers, on Friday! Getting them to commemorate Sparky, our loveable porch-hound Golden Retriever that just died... but we had some great times. What're YOUR dogs and good dog stories?

"On an unrelated note, if you believed that I was a girl, please message me so we can set up a diplomacy game. :-)" Now, don't take advantage of those toddlers on this site.

I'm a Spaniard with an Argentine mother. In other words, I'm white.

White. English descent. Living in Austin, Texas.
However bit of a mutt. Have German, Swiss and Cherokee in nearly equal parts.
Male. Middle class university student (UT Austin). 18 y/o.
My family has been in Texas since the Texas Revolution... so I'm pretty far removed from whatever my heritage was before that.

I'm actually a Brit with a Brazilian mother. I guess this makes me Britzilian?
Viking, or at least of Viking decent. Well anyway, that was the decision at school 40 years ago, before racial profiling based upon bodily features (hair, eyes, nose, chin, limb length) became non-PC.

White, high school kid, very strong German influence in my family, unfortunately American. I wonder if I can legally renounce my US citizenship before I'm 18
SteevoKun (588 D)

SpeakerToAliens, I've of "Viking" (ahem, Nordic) heritage as well. The first person with my family name was a Danish warlord who settled in Normandy and later the family moved to Germany, then came to the USA in the mid-1800's.

Oh, and could someone let GoonerChris know he's not funny? =P

Iceray0: I think there are instructions in your passport. You might want to have other citizenship, though! Where do you live? I hope you don't live in the U. S. with that attitude.

Macrado: My apologies, I am a male.

By the way, my maternal grandfather's father was a Dane from Copenhagen.

Even if you hate the country, having a US citizenship is worth it. My ability to enter and exit the US freely garners a lot of respect and business value. I doubt I'd find as many contracts if I wasn't a US citizen.

I was not raised here, I do not feel a part of this country, and I do not pay taxes. I prostitute the fact that I am a US citizen only to win jobs and am Canadian down to the bone. Though, once I graduate, I'm going back across the pond. America smells funny.

Geofram is a sneaky Canadian that blends into America very well, all the time we've known eachother I never knew! You don't even have an accent or an obnoxious level of friendliness.
jman777 (407 D)

Canadians are not the ones that are obnoxiously friendly.

Anyone south of Delaware is annoyingly friendly, imo. They drive me crazy.
Geofram (130 D(B))

Red Squirrel is back?! (There are several ponds between the good parts of Canada and the alright states, but I meant back to the merry olde)

I was born in Germany and lived there and England for the first years of my life, my parents hired an American speech coach to make sure I had no accent from either country. We moved to Canada after my "father" was dishonourably discharged from the USAF. There I learned how to spell correctly and that I love to bake. It is also why I hate warm weather.

I think my obnoxious level of friendliness was destroyed when I realised that more than a majority of the people in this world are idiots.
JECE (1248 D)

Geofram: Yep. I'd only consider giving up mine if there was a draft -- or worse.
Geofram (130 D(B))
18 Nov 09 UTC
A lot of people have no idea how hard it is to give up a United States citizenship. If you really are worried about the drawbacks of being an American (taxes, draft, laws, etc,) read Emergency by Neil Strauss, that book will get you started on how to safeguard yourself against getting backed into a corner because your only citizenship is American.

Also, it would not be hard to dodge the draft if ever implemented, providing they do not change any of the exemptions. When I was removed from voluntary military service before ever serving, I registered as a conscientious objector, not because I disagree with war, but because I disagree with participating in one not of my choosing.

That, along with being a student (most likely for the rest of my life) will buy me enough time to denounce my US citizenship at any cost (mainly monetarily) and move away.

In response to the earlier question: I do bleed maple syrup.

FREE MAPLE SYRUP FOR EVERYONE WHO KILLS A CANADIAN
Geofram (130 D(B))
18 Nov 09 UTC
Knowing that this would be the only reason to ever murder a Canadian, our government began manufacturing individually wrapped servings of maple syrup that we now all carry in our pockets.

"Don't kill me, here, take this maple syrup instead." works every time.
wydend (0 DX)

its true. I live in Michigan, and once traveled across the bridge to Canada in hopes of murdering a Canadian, but alas, all that I came home with were some small packets of delicious maple syrup =)
Geofram (130 D(B))
18 Nov 09 UTC
The few times you hear of a Canadian being murdered, you'll find that the police never report the victim having any maple syrup packets on his body. This is proof that as long as you don't leave home without the MSP, you will never be murdered. In the event you do forget your MSP, stop by any timmy's, they carry complementary syrups for anyone that asks.
