You guys are great
I love this place. This site. I hate to gush but I just want to say this has to be the best community on the Internet. So many of you are smart, I consistently feel outclassed in every way and look up to a lot of you. You always make me think, and are always respectful. And to the trolls and haters out there, I love you too. I love playing diplomacy and writing on the forum... it enriched me so much. So... just thanks!

How can I find live games, not very fast, live?.. Like one phase is 5 or 10 minutes; because waiting 10 hours or 1 day is so boring?

Question about points in WTA game.
In a WTA game two players went CD and the other three agreed to a draw. I want to know if the two players on CD will be in the draw and get the points as they already have some SCs?

We'd greatly appreciate some help, as the Russian player has gone AWOL during a pause which was requested by a different player (who is now back).

Just because I can (and I like to do so every time I rediscover this site) I'd like to draw attention to this game:
http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=225
Completely impossible now, of course, where you win by SCs (as in the rules) but in the version of phpDip extant then, where you won by units, entirely doable though, I believe, never matched.

Live game crashes.
Hey guys. I love playing live games but they always seem to crash on the unit-placement turn after a player is eliminated. Can the mighty Mods help fix these games so we can get back to playing them. Understandably they won't be live anymore, but at least they'll be playable. Anyone? Anyone?

Supporting Against yourself
Hey all, I recently supported Finland to St. Pete's, and sent St. Pete's to Finland, mistakenly thinking they would swap places. I see now they couldn't, but I don't understand why my 2 tiered attack on St. Pete's didn't dislodge it, is there a rule that you cannot provide support against your own territories? @airborne: yeah, having already read your article as a forum post it wasn't really that enticing...

so if 'they' let us field an A team and a B team I still think ghostratings are the best way for 'us' to decide who gets on the team.

I think this is how the team is shaping up so far. (note i expect all of these players to be bumped i'm just trying to get the ball rolling as far as people signing on goes)

I might warn against using just G-Rating to make the decision as to who should/shouldn't be put into the team.
djbent (2572 D(S))
15 Sep 09 UTC
why would you make that warning, ghost?
orathaic (1009 D(B))
15 Sep 09 UTC
would you suggest that people vote on who gets to represent us?
orathaic (1009 D(B))
15 Sep 09 UTC
we could use the hall of fame: i'm #78 a much better standing, but i'm not actually in favour of points, (or ppsc games)
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
15 Sep 09 UTC
There are two reasons:

1. Some players there will be there because of PPSC rather than WTA play, so it is less relevant.
2. Some players will be very good at beating average to good players, but weaker against the very top players.
djbent (2572 D(S))
15 Sep 09 UTC
very good points. so what would your recommendation be, oh wise maker of ghosts?
orathaic (1009 D(B))
15 Sep 09 UTC
so the ghost-rating rewards solos whether the other players tried to 'stop the leader' as they would in WTA or not (as might be in the case of PPSC) ? and these players are likely to give up no longer likely to be the one who solos? that makes sense, but about point two?
Babak (26982 D(B))

soooo... what's the verdict?

"Hmm, why not national teams within this website? Could be a nice idea though I would have to choose between playing for the U.S., Spain, and Honduras"

I assume it would take a lot of planning, though because of the qualification process especially.

The hall of fame is pretty flawed. Right now I'm 236 on the hall of fame apparently, but I have 1038 D in play and apparently they don't count.

As an unofficial representative of FB Dip, how about we have a trial match against FB Dip? I was number 7 over there so could represent them against us.

How does Dip work as a team sport? Do you play anonymous? WTA (I assume??) Any other details I'm missing?

jarrah (185 D)

Can someone who's played tournament team diplomacy please advise how team dip actually works??
hellalt (70 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
centurian: points in play surely don't count
Centurian (3257 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
...why not? If you counted up my centres I bet I have more than that even. Points invested are still assets in a portfolio.

I think it usually involves in a simple form 7 games with each person playing one game. Each team gets each country once. It becomes like team diplomacy because your in game play will be effected by what is happening in the other games so you can get your team the highest place on the standings.
hellalt (70 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
points in play should count yet they don't
hellalt (70 D)

what about a national cup within this site?
we take the ghost rankings
lets just say no 1 is from USA, no 2 usa, no 3 uk, no 4 netherlands, no 5 uk etc no1 will represent usa, no 3 uk etc
we take the first 49 countries and they get represented by the top player with the same nationality in the ghost list.
preliminary round: 49 countries in 7 games
final: one game with the 7 winners
one problem is that we cant really know what nationality is each player
this can be solved by an email authentication phase (sending to the organizer a scan of your pass or id?)
also i don;t see why someone would like to play as a different nationality
orathaic (1009 D(B))

rom my (limited) expierence of the world dip tournament, each team of 7 plays at 7 different tables (with each player getting a different country) So every team has to play italy and austria.

points are awarded usually based on some scheme, in some face-to-face tournaments they only play to 1906-8 due to time limitations, and it is basically like points-per-supply. I hope this tournament is more like WTA, with points awarded (to the team) for suvival.

Best overall team score is the winner.

or something like that.
Xapi (194 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
I think that the best way to decide who gets to go to the tournament is League standings.

It really represents commitment to deadlines and ability to play with a tournament like mentality.

There is, however, a problem wich is exactly how do you do it?

Take all 7 Premier League players at the time? Take a similar approach to what will become the TGM Champions Trophy?

maybe it should be a combination of the two? ghost rating and league standing? are there other factors to consider?
trim101 (363 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
yeah people might not have played in the leagues or just joined after the first season etc i say just see who wants to play and look at points (in play as well) ghost rating and just general feelings towards how they play
Xapi (194 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
trim, that's the worst idea ever.

You need to establish a clear method for choosing before the applicants are in, to avoid "meta-choosing".
Xapi (194 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
For instance, an idea could be this:

Winner of the last League -> Second if the first doesn't want to
Winner of the previous League -> Second if the first doesn't want to
Winner of the GFDT -> Second if the first doesn't want to
Winner of the Masters -> Second if the first doesn't want to
Top 3 G-R rated players that apply.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
16 Sep 09 UTC
some people don't choose to enter leagues as they are too busy to enter ever competition which comes their way, while they would dfinitely be interested in big competitions like a world series.

but perhaps those people should be on a B team anyway. I am in favour of just using Ghost-ratings (even if this means i wouldn't get to play)
djbent (2572 D(S))
16 Sep 09 UTC
i like xapi's idea, but i also agree with orathaic's point. we need to find a way that helps us measure that someone is not only a good player, but is also reliable. that's what's helpful about the league and tournament participation. ghost-ratings are helpful too, in measuring skill of players. what other ways can we measure that people are reliable? # of NMRs? # of games played?
hellalt (70 D)
16 Sep 09 UTC
since you can try agree what's most important (league participation, ghost ratings, number of games played etc), you are actually trying to establish a mathematical type to measure the genera; performance trim suggested. Good luck finding it. It will probably take up to the next millenium.

Question about countries in Civil Disorder.
Just a quick question about what happend when a country goes into Civil Disorder. One of the players in our game had login problems and his country went into CD.What happens when we attack his units?. If they are forced to retreat what happens then? Do they retreat to a random location or to their supply centre of origin, or are they destroyed? We have our game set for a turn every 48 hours so I dont want to delay the game by 2 days by attacking someone one of his units.
