Bug on Global board
In game 11921, I am playing Turkey and voted for a draw by entering "/draw" in the global box -- without the quotes. The vote was not acknowledged, however, and it doesn't seem to have registered. There is only one other player remaining in the game and he voted for a draw this morning (7:20am ET) -- presumably before the upgrade.

There was a civic-military coup in Honduras about a month ago.

The President Zelaya was forced to leave the country.

The UN, the OEA and most countries in the region are pushing for his reenstatement.

Yeah, so far I don't think *any* country has supported the coup. For once, the U.S., U.N., and leaders like Hugo Chavez are all on one side. The only major news source that I saw supporting the coup was an editorial in the Wall Street Journal.

It's a weird situation -- Zelaya isn't necessarily right, and he did break the law according to the Honduran constitution. But the constitution doesn't explain how to actually depose a president when he breaks the law, and the current coup is judged to be too quick and harsh a reprisal by the courts, congress, and military. So pretty much everyone is just asking them to let him back and take things slower, apparently for stability's sake. I guess the major European powers and the U.S. just don't want to deal with the war that a coup could start, even if they're not particularly fans of Zelaya.

Not constitutional.

Invictus (240 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
I'd say the facts are fluid right now, with many interpretations. It's worth noting that the Supreme Court of Honduras did order Zelaya's arrest, however.

He's not getting back in, but this upcoming election might be pretty interesting. I say if anything happens it will be as a result of one side not liking how the people vote, and I bet that side will be Chavez's.

I don't care whether or not it was constitutional. It seems to me that the military acted correctly in removing from power someone with aspirations to socialism. Call me old-fashioned, but I still think that ideology is a lot of bunk.

Does anyone argue that the former president acted in opposition with the constitution and supreme court? If he did, the the military was correct.

I am no expert of their constitution, but to me this sounds like it happened correctly. Someone please help me understand why this guy is getting support from the other world leaders (besides chavez).

That was the most sincere post ever.

Xapi (194 D)

ag: I did explain that... in the other thread.

He may have acted in the borderline of the law, but in democracy, the military doesn't have the right to remove any incumbent authority.

By doing that, they lost any claim to acting in behalf of the Constitution.

Also, Latin America has a sad history of military coups, wich I advise you to read about if you want to know why not only every government, but also, the vast mayority of the citizens of Latin America is strongly against this coup.
Invictus (240 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
"He may have acted in the borderline of the law, but in democracy, the military doesn't have the right to remove any incumbent authority."

It might. If the military had ignored the Supreme Court's order that would have been just as bad. The military needs to follow the law just like the President does.

"not only every government, but also, the vast mayority of the citizens of Latin America is strongly against this coup."

The majority of the people of Honduras supports what happened, which seems like the more important figure.

There is a sad history of coups in Latin America, but this was an action which removed a criminal president in accordance with the constitution. There's an entrenched clause in the Honduran Constitution barring presidential reelection and which says anyone who tries to change this or even supports the change loses the power of their office. By organizing a referendum on him seeking a third term Zelaya broke this law and the Supreme Court ordered his removal. This is a bit different from Pinochet killing Allende.

He's out, he's staying out barring a Venezuelan invasion, and there will be elections in a few months which the current Acting President is not contesting.

If you can't kick out a President who blatantly ignores the law, how is that really different from the old-style strongmen?
Hamilton (137 D)

I agree with Invictus and I also agree that expelling an extremist President can be warranted at times.

If the military cannot enforce the constitution or supreme court, who will?
Tolstoy (1962 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
The Supreme Court of the United States frequently rules that the President has violated the law. Should we have a coup every time the Solicitor General loses an argument?
Invictus (240 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
Those are hardly comparable situations. Your argument is ridiculous and moot.
Tolstoy (1962 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
Invictus, a few years ago our president decided that he could kidnap anyone he damn well pleased - including American Citizens - and hold them indefinitely without trial. That is the most serious attack on the rights of the accused in this country in over a hundred years, and far more reprehensible than anything I've heard Zelaya being accused of (hell, the man just wanted to be able to run for another term! As a vocal proponent of Democracy, why are you opposed to allowing people to vote for the candidate of their choice? Are you saying the Mob can be trusted once or twice, but not three times?).

What does the president have to do to make this not a ridiculous and moot point? Start putting Jews in concentration camps, or a proscription of political enemies, a la Sulla and Octavian?
Invictus (240 D)
20 Jul 09 UTC
They're just not the same situation. You saying that our President "decided that he could kidnap anyone he damn well pleased - including American Citizens - and hold them indefinitely without trial", AKA the Patriot Act, was a law passed by Congress, rightly or wrongly, not a simple decree by Bush which was outside the rule of law. You can argue the constitutionality of the Act, and I doubt that we'd disagree too much, but it was completely legal since it was an act of Congress.

When the Supreme Court said the detainees needed a trial President Bush listened, albeit grudgingly. When the Honduran Supreme Court said Zelaya couldn't do his referendum he didn't listen. Therein lies the very important difference.

"hell, the man just wanted to be able to run for another term!"

But he can't! It's in the Constitution of Honduras that he can't and that he can't even try! It's even an entrenched clause, which means it's especially hard to change. It's pretty simple. When he decided to ignore the courts and Congress he broke the law and acted unconstitutionally and lost his job.

Taking over countries should be encouraged!
When you take over a country, there is no indication, to an outside observer, that a country was taken over. That is to say, if you take over a country with 1 supply center at the end of a game, you are the only person recorded as having played that game.

@El_Perro_Alto: Please don't do this. Cleaning it up just takes a copy&paste of a query, but until it's cleared up it wastes the time of people reading the forums, because they can't see what posts are actually updated.
