Bug on Global board
In game 11921, I am playing Turkey and voted for a draw by entering "/draw" in the global box -- without the quotes. The vote was not acknowledged, however, and it doesn't seem to have registered. There is only one other player remaining in the game and he voted for a draw this morning (7:20am ET) -- presumably before the upgrade.

In Autumn...
If you have X units, and X SCs, and you are forced to retreat one of those units... instead of retreating you disband that unit leaving you with X-1 units... do you get to build a new unit that turn?

Taking over countries should be encouraged!
When you take over a country, there is no indication, to an outside observer, that a country was taken over. That is to say, if you take over a country with 1 supply center at the end of a game, you are the only person recorded as having played that game.
JECE (1248 D)
21 Jul 09 UTC
Not only is there no record of player changes in finished games, but your own statistics reflect the results of these games. Because you lost a game having started with only one unit, your statistics forever show a loss. This means that if you continuously take over such microstates, you are penalized with being recorded as a continuous loser. Why can't your statistics be divided and multiple players be recorded?
Ukla (390 D)
21 Jul 09 UTC
Couldn't that work to your advantage? If other players looked at your record and thought lightly of you because of it, they could drastically underestimate you and suffer the consequeces, yes?

In the next version civil disorders are tracked after takeovers, but they aren't reported yet. So it's getting there

How long will that take?

What may be needed is that replacement players can only gain points by taking over a country and not lose points. That would encourage people to take over positions and protect the more than rare occurrence of someone accidentally taking a country.

This assumes we're talking about the typical on the ropes player with 1/2 units, but there are also players with 3/4 Spring 1901 NMRs, or the players who just have to leave mid-game, and so splitting the system to be free sometimes might be confusing, and the criteria for what makes a country on the ropes isn't so easy to define

I think the number of points for a typical 1/2 unit takeover is small enough that they're not what might limit people. I can understand that people wouldn't want it to affect their lost games stats though, and that's coming.

@JECE: When? It'll be a few mini versions down the line, probably some time before 1.0, along with a bunch of other stuff I'd like to addnow but don't have time to, no idea when though
JECE (1248 D)

Yes, I have little problem with the small bets. I only have a problem with the player who really lost the game disapearing from all lists and individual player stats.
jman777 (407 D)
21 Jul 09 UTC
well I'm pretty sure that it shows up on the player who left's record as a "left game". so thats sort of a black mark cause it shows that you aren't a very reliable player.
JECE (1248 D)
21 Jul 09 UTC
To Ukla: That is an interesting way to look at it, but it doesn't make sense that old players cannot be identified. Frankly, the fixed stats, to me, would be nice, but it's definitely not right for the archives to give credit only to the last player. I think the point is to get more players to take over the microstates that crowd the joinable games. Funny point, though!

I bet there's a "sub-cult" of replacement player(s) who get into taking on countries in dificulties, it's jumping in the deep end of the pool. It can be fun when other players have just played a spring move thinking OK i can open up a gap on that "safe" side as those pieces are in civil disorder and attack on another front, and then there's a new player for the fall move and the dynamics suddenly change again. Plus there are alliances & enemies already made so it's a "higher risk" mystery bag, compared to a normal start.
Yeah but compared to the number of complete n00bs who jump into a CD without having the slightest idea what they're doing, that sub-cult is nearly nonexistent. In one of my games the dregs of Turkey have changed hands four or five times already. One guy even entered TWO phases of orders! Special!
Mr. Pinguin (344 D)

I've also noticed that in the majority of cases, CD take overs have a vastly inflated buy-in. So contrary to what Kestas was saying, I do think the points might matter, (at least to someone like me who doesn't have alot to throw away).

At best, CDs are nominally priced for their SCs/armies, but are still overvalued because the new player is behind in diplomacy when they join and neighbors have already begun planning their strategies around dividing up the CD country.

At worst (and this seems quite common), the number of SCs is pointedly incorrect because at the end of an Autumn or Spring move phase, the abandoned nation has lost several SCs, lost units which disbanded because no one was there to order the retreat, and so any take-over at that point includes a purchase price for SCs and units which are already lost.

I don't know of any great solutions for this problem.. but it is an unfortunate consequence of the system.

I wouldn't know, but it doesn't show up on the actual archived game.

Yes, they often are inflated, but if during a Spring phase enemy armies are sitting on top of some of "your "supply centers, the price seems to be significantly less. Sometimes for 0 points!

"Depth charging"
@El_Perro_Alto: Please don't do this. Cleaning it up just takes a copy&paste of a query, but until it's cleared up it wastes the time of people reading the forums, because they can't see what posts are actually updated.

The next version has code to prevent "depth charging", but I'd rather not spend time writing anti-dumbass code so use some common sense

This question came up to my great uncle and me while we were verbally feuding with each other. We got a few half decent answers to it. But it was too late to actually really think about it. And I knew that this would be a badass question to put up in the forum.
