Ok, I've got a question about moves and failed moves, that I'm pretty sure I know the answer to but wanted to put to the community. See below.

Back in the day...
Do you guys remember the first megathread? By that I mean the first to top 100 posts. I think it was about poltical alignment. Before that the 50 or 60 some-odd threads about historical figures playing diplomacy seemed huge, but not so much now.

Face-to-Face versus Online ?
Has anybody played both 'versions' of the game often enough to comment on the differences in play, i.e. in negotiations?
Do you find people are more likely to stab sitting miles away behind a computer screen?
Does it hinder negotiations to have to write in text without facing your friend/foe eye to eye?

Call it what you like, just use it. What is this, ancient Rome?

why do i need to use it can you not read without it
Invictus (240 D)
27 Oct 08 UTC
It's much easier to read with it. Come on, it's not like I'm asking for a kidney.
philcore (317 D(S))

in the two instances I noticed punctuation missing, they were question marks, not periods. BTW, what's a "full stop"? Isn't that for telegraphs or Morse code or something?
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
28 Oct 08 UTC
"full stop" is the correct word for what people in the colonies call a "period".
trim101 (363 D)
28 Oct 08 UTC
yeah a period is something completely different :p

Sent from: Centurian (69 ) Sent: Mon 10 PM
Clearly you don't know alot about the IRA. They showed a general humanity to their attacks that was not evident in those of Al-Qaeda.
===========================================
mmmmm as I recall and I am old enough to remember most of the troubles as they were called, there were occassions were a warning was given beforehand so that crowds would be ushered into the area where a bomb was about to explode. I also recall, (although i was very young) the Birmingham pub bombings which targetted innocents on a night out. I really can't see how this could be discribed as "humane". Could I ask where you are from Centurian?
paulg (358 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
I agree with you Maniac and I notice from elsewhere that Centurian is nowhere near old enough to remember any of the troubles. There were many false warnings, which were mainly to cause chaos and disruptions. The IRA were certainly not humane when they burst into a Protestant church and opened fire on the congregation. On the positive side the IRA were not just a terrorist organisation. They did an excellent job in policing catholic estates in Northern Ireland. Teenage thugs would end up losing their kneecaps.

Al-Qaeda is an artificial construct. it's arabic slang for the toilet. The CIA caught the bin laden family's accountant, who was running from them for embezzling 11 million dollars, and got him to testify that Al-Qaeda was an international terror network and that Osama bin Laden was the leader of it.

I know a guy who was ONI anti-terror analyst from 1997 until 2002, he can tell you all about islamic jihad and hezzbollah and tamil tigers but Al-Qaeda? never fucking heard of them
Invictus (240 D)

Are you serious? This takes the cake, Biff.
trim101 (363 D)

he does have a point kind of, but al qaeda were/are an american created problem
Sicarius (673 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
say what you wish invictus, but georgetown graduate ex ONI terror analyst has more pull with me when it comes to Al-Qaeda than some right wing FOX news watching high schooler
Invictus (240 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
He's saying they don't exist, that it's just a construct to incriminate Bin Laden. But why would we want him if he weren't a terrorist financier?

It's lunacy.
Sicarius (673 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
I'm not saying he's not a terrorist. or a terrorist financier. I'm saying he's not the leader of an international terrorist organization.

beyond the shadow of a doubt.
trim101 (363 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
ok well that is bollocks that they dont exist, but i do think its not as simple as the news networks make out, and i do think that the fall out from 9-11 has made al queda worse by people doing things in its name
Invictus (240 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
Unbelievable. Why does everything have to be some tottering lie with you, Sicarius?
Sicarius (673 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
Anyway Bin Laden is not at fault for 9-11
this is something me and your government are in agreeement with.
we also agree that Khaled sheik mohammed (I know I spelled that wrong) was the one that came up with the idea. Now, where we disagree is who actually did it.
I recommend you watch zeitgeist. it's a good starting point.
Sicarius (673 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
ok dude 9-11 was definitely a lie

who ever heard of a steel building collapsing because of a fire???
jet fuel does not burn hot enough to melt steel. not even close.
I mean shit, the WTC were BUILT TO WITHSTAND BEING HIT BY A PLANE.
trim101 (363 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
@invictus i do think its quite funny that both you and sicarious are so completely different and argue about everything with no middle ground
Sicarius (673 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
invictus why are you always so incredulous? it's like you're suprised to find someone who thinks differently than you and disagrees with your government
Invictus (240 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
That's it! 9-11 conspiracies are an insult to all the Americans who lost their lives on that day. You've said some offensive things before, but this is disgusting. Of course it wasn't planned out step-by-step by bin Laden personally, or any one person alone.

What you're saying is so, so errant I'm apoplectic here. I can't see how that's a credible way to look at the world. You're nuts!
Sicarius (673 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
oh dude thats not offensive at all. if I was trying to be offensive I probably wouldve said....

hey whats black and gray and looks great on 1000 cops?

world trade centers.

see thats an insult to the americans that lost their lives. but foolishly and blindly believing what the government tells you without looking into it or even being open to different possibilities is ridiculous. you are very very close minded.
you're not even willing to accept the possibility.
even thought the evidence very very clearly supports that an airplane did not cause the trade centers to collapse

trim101 (363 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
isnt a better definition of nuts just listening to what the news and the government says without researching things yourself?
Sicarius (673 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
trims right.
you give me proof that 9-11 was NOT the government?
trim101 (363 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
hahahaha i like that joke
Invictus (240 D)
29 Oct 08 UTC
Oh God. Are you actually saying I'm wrong by not believing in the stupidest, most insulting, pull-the-shit-out-your-ass-throw-it-at-the-wall-to-see-what-sticks theory of all time?

Go ahead and troll up some lefty "evidence" on how Bush and the Jews and Freemasons and the Bilderberg Group and a bunch of evil rich people got together to dream up a ludicrously complicated, circuitously planned attack to serve their own ends. Just don't expect me or anyone else to swallow your nonsense. The government can barely deliver the mail and you put them behind the most intricate caper in history? Remarkable.

trim101 (363 D)

no i think what hes getting out is that you cant even open your mind up to the possiblity, seriously mate go watch some bill hicks it might give you a better outlook on life

Online Election Game
I'm not a big poster in forums. I usually have just enough time to do my moves before time runs out, so you haven't seen any messages from me here before. I am writing now because I would like to tell you about a new project I have recently put online. Inspired by the presidential elections this year I decided to set up a website about elections and create an online election game.

Downtime
I think we went down for a while, so I added 2 hours onto all the games. I'll post the response to the support ticket when I get it :-(

In a future version it'll detect when there has been downtime and delay processing, so no-one will miss out on turns. For now hope no-one missed out, apologies if you did

What's your favorite country to play and why?
I like Germany, because of the variety of options you have as a player. Obviously its central location can be problematic, but with the right use of diplomacy it can be a very adaptable, flexible country that can benefit from any combination of weak/strong countries around the board, as long as its player is adequate.
