What's been up with the timers lately?
They've been really off. I just had it go from "1 minute, 5 seconds" to "Now" in less than 20 seconds, and when it does get to "Now" it takes like 30 seconds to roll over... Not just on my home computer, either.

Well I was too tired to make it to day 2, but this was a blast. Never played F2F before, but there was some talk of setting up more games in the Boston area, where the F2F community doesn't really seem to exist. So aside form just being a great time on its own, this event might lead to even more games.

I was on the board with the 6-way draw 2WL mentioned. In fact, I was the one who initially offered it. I had been at 8 centers as Russia, but England backed by a Western Triple managed to take Sweden and StP from me(my fault, some bad tactical decisions after it was clear StP was threatened) With slim prospects of reclaiming StP and the stinging humiliation of losing such a defensible province, I offered the draw.

Have to say though, I was surprised when the board accepted it. Tom(England) later told me he was happy to quit while he was ahead. He'd just stabbed Germany, and ended up with a decent score in the tournament overall, so maybe it was a good call. Dan(Turkey) mentioned he wasn't sold on the draw and somewhat regretted voting yes.

>>there was some talk of setting up more games in the Boston area, where the F2F community doesn't really seem to exist.<<

There used to be a fairly active hobby there, but over the past four or five years, the group's three most active organizers moved away and its tournament, the Boston Massacre, picked up and moved to Philadelphia. So, there are players there but no one to lead them. Abge's event could be great for the Boston-area FTF scene and the wider FTF hobby.

>>I was on the board with the 6-way draw 2WL mentioned.<<

They're playing Sum of Squares, I believe, so draw size really doesn't matter. That's hard to adapt to when you're accustomed to draw-based scoring, but it's important to play the system.

If you New Englanders are interested in more FTF tournament Diplomacy, there's a tournament in Killington, Vermont, Nov. 7 to 9, called the Carnage Accords. I've been to Carnage a few times over the years, and it's a great event. More info at http://www.carnagecon.com/. I can put you in touch with the organizers of the Diplomacy tournament if you're interested. Just PM me.

Glad to see Weasel ex-pat Ted McClelland did well. He's the guy who wrote this, btw: http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/May-2009/All-in-the-Game/. He met Calhamer at our second Weasel Moot back in 2008 and later interviewed him for this article, which ran in Chicago Magazine.

Yes, Ted did great. 3rd Place, Best Italy and tied for Best England. Only playing 2 of the 3 boards!

Our own 2nd also had a good showing. Best Russia and 4th place despite only playing 2 of 3 boards. Watch out you F2Fers; webDippers are coming!

Oh, the term makes sense, but when you hear it, you know you're talking with a player who plays primarily on a site that uses an interface like this one to enter orders.

Hey Jim,

So, I'm looking at CarnageCon, but maybe you can help out someone who has only been to small Diplomacy Tournaments. It looks like there are 3 Diplomacy games, one on Friday evening and 2 on Saturday? How do we know when they start? I saw Friday evening, so I assume that means the 7pm slot? What about Saturday?

As someone who as only played Diplomacy in the basement of bookshops, this (http://www.carnagecon.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2014_Carnage_Booklet_Final_for_Web.pdf) is a bit overwhelming. : )

You're right, that booklet isn't helpful at all if you want to play Dip. I'll get the answer for you. I'm pretty sure even preregistration is handled differently for Dip. Anyway, Dave (the TD) and Robert (one of the convention organizers) were both at Tempest this weekend, so I may not have an answer for you till tomorrow.

Man, if I had come today I definitely would have placed in the top 3. As it stands, only playing 2/3 games and getting fourth isn't bad, especially considering Randy did really well.

As far as writing orders is concerned, I never found myself tempted to write "support hold", instead opting for the traditional "...s A Bud h", for example. I did catch myself writing "via land" on a few occasions though.

Here's some info on the timing for the Carnage Dip tournament.

Round 1: Friday, Nov. 7, starting at 7 p.m.
Round 2: Saturday, Nov. 8, at 9 a.m.
Round 3: Saturday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m.
Awards: Sunday, Nov. 9, at 10 a.m.

All three rounds are open ended.

I was Austria game 1 and Germany game 2, both on the first board. This was a pretty great f2f, I had a ton of fun this time. I honestly made a few mistakes playing Austria the first game. As was noted, I ran a balancing act pretty well for a while but I kept it up too long. I didn't get stabby enough that game and it destroyed me. I guess the timelimit hurt me a bit too, but honestly it likely would have turned out the same way.
The second game as Germany went a lot better for me over all. Completely annihilating France from the onset felt really good and worked out well since I was able to get both Italy and England onboard with it starting in Spring 1901. I should have moved on Russia right after that with my ridiculous land army but I sensed that England was feeling stabby (we ended up stabbing each other the same turn) so I ended up fighting a super annoying way against England with Russia. Basically, I feel like I could have taken better advantage of back to back 3 build years but I am still happy with an 8 SC finish.
Ted, our Germany-Italy alliance was super fun and Tom I enjoyed interacting with you in both games.

I hope we can do it again soon!

What is up with Bible School Thread? Can anyone explain to me?
In all honesty, I do not think that there is any justifiable reason to quench the Bible Verse thread of Majus - everyone has a right to expression. Other than, being a short step from advertisement spamming.
