I've counted wrong. There are 7 players who have asked to be drivers.

ssorenn, it's basically a public press game, only a different person is writing the press to the players (and nobody knows who the players are).

Yeah, I think you got it. Only way for drivers to communicate, even with their own backseat driver, is via the moves.

Right, except that the people chatting aren't neutral.

It's somewhat similar to the School of War games actually. Except whereas the professors in SoW are supposed to be neutral and honest commentators, the backseat drivers are instead biased towards serving the interests of one particular country and need not be honest at all.

The interaction between drivers and backseat drivers is a delicate one. Drivers may completely ignore their backseat driver but that comes at a cost. If they ignore them at strategic moments it can give them an element of surprise. However, if they ignore them all the time their backseat driver will soon not be taken seriously anymore, which gives an edge to other countries that still have a credible backseat driver.

Backseat drivers on the other hand can't just negotiate freely either. They have to kind of guess the intention of their drivers from the moves and work with/around that. If they fail at that their driver might become more inclined to ignore them.

I'd very much like to be a backseat driver, this sounds excellent...

We have 8 drivers now, 2 backseat drivers and 4 eithers. Plus ILN who forgot to mention what role he wants to play. So the eithers will be backseat drivers, I'll be turning down at least one driver and we need one more backseat driver, which might be ILN.

Do you want to be out? We already have more than 7 drivers so some will be out, but it's not first come, first served. I'll look at resignation records and ghost ratings and select those whom I think are most likely to provide a good game experience.

Alright, if all eithers play as backseat driver then we have a game. I'll leave it open for another day in case anyone else wants a piece of this.
