Why are all my posts in italics?

@nfowler562 Check the help section on your screen. There should be something that says " Webdiplomacy Rulebook" on it or something like that. The variants link will tell you about the different types of games on webdiplomacy. This will all be located on the Help button in the top right of your screen.

Gunboat games are played without press and are usually anonymous. You can click Games in the top-right and search for a gunboat game or you can create your own and advertise for it on the Forum.

Your posts only show up in italics to you, not to anyone else. I think it's an extra cue to show you which posts are yours.

Why does it say a name next to "Welcome, " at the top and show a number in parentheses? Who's name is that and what is that number?

It should be your name and the number is the total amount of Diplomacy points you have that are not currently in play.

Actually I did all of that before I posted. I read about cheating, multi-accounting, metagaming, not posting about on going games in forums. Followed the variants tab to the page that tells me about the five games and something under it which says it is not active. When I click on those links my address bar changes for a quick moment but nothing on my end(for all I know I just nuked Ohio(no big loss there)). Found the variant homepage...not sure it said anything about Gunboat. Maybe at this point I am just whining. I personally am not finding HELP very helpful.

Gunboat is just dip lingo for games with anonymous players and no press. On this site these are considered game settings rather than a "real" variant.

nfowler - what sort of help are you looking for? All the links to the variant homepages work for the variants that you can play on the site. The rest are projects that kestas (site owner) is working on to bring over but aren't active yet. So, those shouldn't be a worry to you.

Gunboat is just a setting that any game can be played under, rather than a variant, so it won't be under there. It refers to a no press game (not necessarily anon, though most are) in which all diplomacy is done via movement of units.

But, seriously, (un)fortunately, this is a very simple Forum. We only have the most basic of features.

Unfortunately, no there isn't. There will be a star next to any thread that you reply on, so it gets bumped to the top of the forum whenever someone posts on it, but that's it.

thibaud1: You have to post in the thread first. Threads where you have posted have a green star next to their title for you to quickly scan through the forum and find. You know someone has replied to a thread if it is 'bumped' to the top of the forum's last page.

Here's one trick to make easy links to threads, games, userID. The site automatically converts certain text strings to links, in either forum posts or PMs. For example:
threadID=1105653
userID=59202
gameID=134951

One way to make a note to yourself and to keep a handy link on your home page (until the PM eventually falls off the bottom of the list) is to send something like one of the above examples as a PM to a player that is banned. For example, I could PM userID=32304 to note threads, games, users that I want to temporarily have a handy link to.

Also, any thread that you post in gets a star to make it easier for you to find again.
