Deadlocked doors. Blast shields. Blasters hidden under the pillow. All precautions being taken by the Imperial Officials, who were growing increasingly aware that very few of them remained and even fewer, if any, would make it off this space station alive.
The man being watched didn’t take any of these precautions, because he had his greatest defence at his side, and he trusted it with his life. He slept at the controls of his Starfighter, with a sensor that would wake him if anyone entered the hangar. The autopilot was set to lift off the moment the sensor went off, and the man had trained himself to jump straight to the gun controls. His reaction speed was well known as the fastest in the Empire - he’d be able to shoot any attacker before exiting the hangar and then would be pulled back by the tractor beam (which had been set to stop any spacecraft leaving) to inspect his kill.
Unfortunately for him, when the sensor went off, it was not the gun controls he needed to be jumping to. While the autopilot had fantastic programming that allowed it to calculate exactly what it would need to do to avoid detected obstacles, the pilot was very confident in his own ability and had set it to follow his orders if there was ever a contradiction with its own decision making and his. The ship detected the closed Hangar doors, but the pilot’s orders were to start the engines and lift off upon the sensor signal.
It all happened in less than 3 seconds. The sensor went off, the ship’s engines started, and Baron Soontir Fel was immediately at the gun control. He saw the figure in the monitor, smiled, glanced up, saw the rapidly approaching closed door, and attempted to jump to the ship controls, the shot never taken. He was fast, but nobody could have been fast enough.
The ship hit the Blast doors at a huge speed – this Starfighter had been modified by Fel himself to have massive acceleration – and the explosion rocked the entire station.
The figure had ran back towards the control room just in time to avoid the flying debris, flushed the remains of the ship out of the airlock, and opened the Blast Doors again. If it wasn’t for the blackened floor and walls, it would look like nothing had happened.
WARDENDRESDEN, otherwise known as Baron Soontir Fel, an IMPERIAL OFFICIAL, has been killed!
Day 7 has begun, and will end in 48 hours.
