That's actually not true, guak. It goes off of games started, not games finished.

CMurder, the country selection process is mostly random, with weighting added to make you slightly less likely to get countries you've drawn recently. Your friend's case is a statistical unlikelihood, to be sure, but that's going to happen occasionally when you have a lot of users playing a lot of games. It should start to even out if he continues to play.

guak, I think it's always been like that. I, like you and Valis, believed it was finished games for a long time. Valis may be right about it being a deep-rooted rumor, just like the one that krellin isn't Scarlett Johansson.

Actually Bob your country chance weightings only come into play when a game starts, this is the only time country chance weightings are read from or written to; nothing happens when you leave a game.

To the original poster if you want to be a bit more specific each time you are a country the chance of you being that country next time is halved (there's a bit more detail but that's the nut of it)

Hi VB, there's no distinction between completed and uncompleted games; the moment you're assigned to a game your chance of next being assigned is halved. You can always get unlucky and have a bunch of games in a row, but the code is applied when the game starts.

Also it is per variant, there's a new variant data table introduced a while back which allows per variant, per game / per user / per phase etc data to be stored in a flexible way, so that variants don't need their own data structures or to hack existing data structures. Not sure how widely it's used except for country allocation

As Abge says, the country selector uses your started games to determine who is who. I don't know where the confusion with finished games came from, but it seems pretty common.

Doing it with started games is better than biasing by only finished games, as that way your current games affect the outcome.

A couple of other things:

* started games of course includes cancelled games
* the bias is usually pretty small
* the system "rolls" for the person who has had the biggest imbalance of who they've played recently first. So your opponents affect how much your previous counties affect your next country.

There's also the fact that country selection is only weighted when games are finished. So, if you join three games in rapid succession, the fact that you drew Turkey in the first two will have _no_ impact on your odds of getting Turkey a third time. Only finished games are counted.

guak: I don't think it has ever been based on games finished. The relevant code hasn't changed since June 2013, when the bias was added.

Sometimes I wonder if the code is achieving the intended purpose - since the system gives users who have had a bigger imbalance their country selection first, I wonder if the biased system results in more imbalance for new users. I haven't thought about this too much, though.
