H.R. – “Isn't that a quote from Zoroaster?” Actually I was paraphrasing Ephesians:

"Finally, draw your strength from the Lord and from his mighty power. Put on the armor of God so that you may be able to stand firm against the tactics of the devil. For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens. Therefore, put on the armor of God, that you may be able to resist on the evil day and, having done everything, to hold your ground. So stand fast with your loins girded in truth, clothed with righteousness as a breastplate, and your feet shod in readiness for the gospel of peace. In all circumstances, hold faith as a shield, to quench all [the] flaming arrows of the evil one. And take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God." Eph 6:10-17

What I always found interesting is that David took off the ‘Armor of Man’ before he slew Goliath.

@BaldOldGuy There's a certain daily bible quotes thread that might interest you if you haven't been in it already.

Gobble - "Either way, the rule as written in the Bible is you follow Christ's teachings and you get into Heaven, so if you don't follow them, whether it is because you don't believe in any god or if you don't believe in Christ, you don't get in. Sorry."

Not quite true. Christ teaches how we should live. But there is no one roadmap. You cannot work your way into heaven. The thief crucified next to Christ was told he would be in Paradise that day. We don't know God's plans.

Personally, I prefer Odysseus to David, for a protagonist who uses brains over brawn, though.

Gobble - "I'm pretty sure it is said in the Bible exactly what I said."
Then how do you explain the thief going to heaven? (Not from a religious perspective, but as a matter of logic. "You must follow Christ's teachings to get to heaven. The thief did not follow Christs teachings. Therefore, the thief did not go to heaven. But he achieved salvation. ) Now, this may be the only one. But the point is we don't know all of God's plans. Like, what his plans are for the 50 million babies killed by abortion.

Gobble - Just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it is not real. We don't understand so much about the human brain - memory, consciousness - but we know it is real. "I don't understand it, so it doesn't exist!" Not a real strong argument.

There is nothing more scary to someone who is religious than fearing another religious group may eventually have power over them. That's why it is important to keep religion out of governance.

I agree with BOG in one regard: Islam has religion and law deeply intertwined. Even though most Muslims don't support the hardest of hard core Sharia, some do, and some always will.

That's the fear: Every religion does this to some degree, so practitioners know what the other side is capable of because they too are capable of the same.
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
12 Oct 15 UTC
JK " Islam has religion and law deeply intertwined." That is so true, and that should scare everyone who cherishes Liberty and Freedom. Not just the religious.
Hellenic Riot (1626 D(G))
12 Oct 15 UTC
So what if you're part of religion that doesn't have law or religion entwined much at all; but also someone who doesn't care about Liberty or Freedom? :(
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)

HR -"but also someone who doesn't care about Liberty or Freedom?" Then you are a slave. Do what you are told. Submit.

HR - "If everyone else is a slave, then sure. Equality is far more important than Liberty." This makes no sense. Everyone cannot be slave. "All pigs are equal, but some pigs are more equal than others" I can't believe a human sets his sights so low. Equality of opportunity, of course. Equality of outcomes, hell no. Prison is one place where all the inmates are equal. No guns, but still lots of violence. And just don't drop the soap in the shower.
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
12 Oct 15 UTC
HR - "Most liberties come at the expense of someone else." The founders of the US believed Liberty and 'certain unalienable rights' come from God. For all to enjoy. Freedom comes at the expense of the oppressor. Who lost liberty after the American revolution? The King. He couldn't freely command his subjects. I can't believe you embrace slavery so easily.

@ BaldOldGuy: "The founders of the US believed Liberty and 'certain unalienable rights' come from God. For all to enjoy."

Then why did those founders not extend those unalienable rights to native americans, or their own black slaves? Thomas Jefferson owned over 200 slaves. It's amazing that you talk about how bad slavery is, whilst at the same time lauding the principles of the founders who, themselves, subjected other humans to slavery.
BaldOldGuy (74 DX)
12 Oct 15 UTC
Jamie -"Then why did those founders not extend those unalienable rights to native americans, or their own black slaves?" The slave states would not have voted for a Constitution if slavery was eliminated. So they kicked the can down the line until we fought a revolution to rid this country of the scourge of slavery. (Interesting side note - The Republican party was formed to eliminate slavery. The Democrats formed the KKK, elected George Wallace. But blacks still vote for the slave masters of the Democrat party) And if you haven't noticed, slavery does not exist in the US - the ideals won out with time. Yes, cultural change takes time. Slavery does exist in Islamic countries.

HR: "Most liberties come at the expense of someone else."

Really? I have freedom of thought, of religion, to have sex with people of the same gender, to vote (actually, I don't but that is a long story) and a number of other things. I am unclear at whose expense I have these things.

The best answer I have is those who died fighting for these liberties (e.g. my uncle, who was killed at Arnhem in 1944). Is that what you meant?
