On the Proper Usage of Fleets
A question came up in another thread about how fleets should best be deployed. Should they always stay in the ocean? Are they useful in coastal territories? How many fleets should one have? Etc.. Share your thoughts within.

I'll be off the grid Friday - Tuesday, can anyone help me out? I'm in two games, both as Turkey. I'm not stomping in either of them but I still have a role to play in the game arc.

Dear Occupy Wall Street Protestors:
Get a job or, failing that, get a LIFE.
Promotion of Power and Self-Interest are the motivating factors in human decision-making, and have been since we made the first fires and sharpened the first spears. Yo're not going to override human nature, you're just making asses of yourselves...set REALISTIC goals or set yourself to the task of misery (if its the latter, enjoy...I know I will.)

It's pages back I'm sure obi. And I was just busting your chops this last go round cause I thought this thread had finally died.

My point is, and still remains, it isn't for us to decide what point their protest makes or assign worth to it. they feel it has worth and they have a right to protest within the confines of the law.

So let them waste their time and when mommy and daddy stop sedning them money because they aren't attending school anymore and they find the,mselves hungry, they'll have learned a bvaluable lesson about economics, and maybe we'll have learned something about the power of naivette as well.

@obi
"I don't care about song lyrics, though.
I don't care about good intentions.
I don't care about what might maybe somehow possibly come of this down the road.
I don't care about the philosophic nature of human beings in relation to greed.
I don't care about analogies to the Flower Children in a post-1960s world."

so, why do you care at all?

"I think these kids are wasting their time, your time, my time.
I think these kids are directionless, and until they have at least that, I won't applaud them.
I think these kids are dreaming impossible dreams."

It's great you think. Now, the only problem I see here is that... they are wasting your time? you could save all that time and more, if you didn't keep writing here...
so much hate Fasces, so much hate
Les Miserables is a play, and the play is written by a person with an agenda, please stop using it as a factual reference.

Fasces is the spoiled offspring of some white Kenyan highlanders. You have to hate 99% of humanity to come from that sort of vile background.
And, Finally, do you know what gives movements coherence and direction Obi? Historians give movements coherence and direction. You think the Civil rights movement, and even worse, the women's rights movement, had clear cut objectives and tactics from the start? If you do you are completely ignorant of history. The successful movements get their sympathetic historians which go back and smooth out the rough edges and defining moments that seemingly give earlier struggles direction. The unsuccessful movements get their historians too, but historians that attempt to point out their failings, their lack of direction, and their futility.

I haven't read this thread, but would like to honestly ask how anyone could earnestly back these people. they protest nothing and ask for nothing.

They just did occupy toronto on the weekend. they are retarded. seems like some sort of a hipster thing (doing it to be on trend).

And you'd think they would call it occupy bay street at least. Or maybe they don't know their local geography.
@Santa,just because I haven't followed this doesn't mean I don;t follow the news.
this being this thread.
principians (881 D)

Putin33 (111 D)

That's because Bay Street is a wholly owned subsidiary of American capital. Or at least 40% owned. Does any developed country have more foreign control of their industry than Canada?

@Fasces:

Stop embarassing yourself. I know you won't listen , but on the off chance you do...stop embarassing yourself.

@Draug:

Fair enough. :)

@Santa C:

I'mn not treating Les Mis as a factual reference...

Draug used a literary reference, so I was merely using one too.

@principians:

"so, why do you care at all?"

-Takes news time away from real stories

-It's--unfairly--labeled as many as reflecting poorly on the Left Wing, the wing I vote for most often and agree with the most (Though, as you can tell by my comments, I'm not afraid to go conservative, either, the liberal options just appeals the most often.)

-It's preventing, via those first two, a REAL protest or movement towards some tangible solutions arising.

-It's a waste of these kids time, and I feel sorry for the kids to that end...we're all so fond of citing the Flower Children here--the Summer of Love HARDLY was the idyllic paradisial area and time in SF that it's remembered as...hell, even George Harrison and the Beatles, the inspiration for plenty of those Flower Children, called the whole thing sad when he went and actually saw how they lived and what they were doing...it hasn't reached that level yet, but if these kids keep going like this, many of them could regret it later in life...I doubt many prospective employers are going to look favorably on those who stripped and put on a nude show for this, for instance...and bosses aren't overenthusiastic about hiring people who call their ilk greedy pigs that need to be stopped, either...

-I find it rather offensive that these kids aren't even TRYING to get work right not and are just putting on a show, all camped out...again, I don't make tutoring, but 1. I'm at least trying and 2. I'm making more now than when I started by growing it with some advertising and good word of mouth from some good jobs and EFFORT I put in...I'm hardly the exemplar of how to succeed in this economy, but I think at least I can be counted as someone who's attempting to get on, rather than someone who pitched a tend to bitch, moan, and quit

-Their likening themselve to the Egyptian protesters is like my earnestly likening my most caffeine-fueled ramblings to the works of Plato or calling a USA/Germany hockey match akin to WWII, ie, ignorant, absurd, downright stupid, offensive, putrid, and reeking of a level of self-imnportance and self-indulgence that causes even I with my inflated ego to turn up my lunch.

-"We are the 99%" my ass...enough said...

For starters.

@Lando:

THANK YOU. +1

That's right, Obi knows what a "real" protest movement looks like. He'd be busy building one but he's hard at work writing screeds about how people shouldn't be able to vote unless they're one of those "elite". Or if he wasn't busy writing poetry and drinking tea.

Obi has turned into one of those "get a job" losers who always counterprotest whenever anybody does anything. Nevermind that the bulk of the movement are trade unionists, including teachers, firefighters, librarians, etc.
I'mn not treating Les Mis as a factual reference...

Draug used a literary reference, so I was merely using one too.

Youve used it like 5 times, twice along with other historical chestnuts such as as "Sparticus's revolution"
"-Their likening themselve to the Egyptian protesters is like my earnestly likening my most caffeine-fueled ramblings to the works of Plato or calling a USA/Germany hockey match akin to WWII, ie, ignorant, absurd, downright stupid, offensive, putrid, and reeking of a level of self-imnportance and self-indulgence that causes even I with my inflated ego to turn up my lunch."

Funny, because the Egyptian protest leaders agree with them and express their solidarity...

@Putin:

Cry me a river...

If I don't support ONE protest run by whiny college kids, I'm suddenly a fascist capitalist suit?

Riiiiight...

And by that logic, if I disagree with the Democrats once, I'm automatically a Republican, right?

Yu know, for calling ME a rigid conformist, Putin, you seem to be quite a little lemming yourself--follow the liberalist movements, whatever the form, whatever the shape, even if its ill-defined and a complete mockery of real liberalism, even if there are valid counterpoints, even if all *I* ask is for a better movement...

But nope!

We all MUST support these kiddies or we're automatically all old fogie suits!

Atta way to conform to the anti-confromists, Putin!

@SC:

"Funny, because the Egyptian protest leaders agree with them and express their solidarity..."

Interested in a game?
So I just found out an old friend also plays Diplomacy and I've introduced him to the site. We've decided a live game on Thursday probably around 11am est would work best for his first game here, so I'm trying to find quality players who won't nmr. I haven't decided on specifics so far except for day and time so input is welcomed. If interested send me a pm or post below.

When they say, "Throughout the pants there are multiple hit marks, stains, and tears," do they mean tears like parts that were ripped or tears like crying? I prefer the latter explanation.

hilarity of the day
My little sister, 16, who I've always found to be a sharp young woman, mentioned today that she does not really know which months go in which order, something that to me seems should be a given part of any education. When I asked her, "Well, what the heck were they teaching you in 2nd grade?" she giggled and replied, "Jesus."

Good thing those private schools have their priorities straight, eh?

For all you religious types out there...
Question: is it more sinful to get a gay divorce than it is to get gay married? I mean, say you get gay married, BAM! You're going to hell for sure, right? But then you realize the error of your ways, and decide you want a gay divorce to get back into God's graces... but divorce is a sin too!

So is it better at that point to just stay gay married? Or is the the flames no matter what? I'm so confused...

The BBC have released this article/video ( http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-15387714 ) detailing outlines for a Russian plan to link Russia with the US by an underground train tunnel link across the Bering Strait. Despite the cost, it sounds amazing! What do the rest of you think?

An interesting little "bug" that could affect GR...
So, this game (gameID=64994) was drawn in the last half hour (around 9:45am), yet the time stamp says it ended at 5:30pm Eastern last night.

If this had been the first, instead of the 24th, this game could have been included in the previous month's GR. Something seems amiss there.
