Looking for a decent game (RR96%)
I'm looking to join a game with players that will actually play. I haven't played for a couple of years and was quickly reminded why I stopped when in Autumn 01 3 people failed to submit orders in my first game back. My RR is 96% (I'm still ashamed it's not 100% - I CD'ed once before RR was visible and didn't know it would negatively affect my stats). I prefer to play classic. Other than that, I'm not too bothered on rules or phase length. Also, I love players that "ready" often.

Throwing a game
What is everybody's opinion on players throwing a game? There's a debate going on in a game of mine whether it's a form of metagaming or a valid strategy, or just unsportsmanlike, and I'd be curious to see how everyone feels about it.

HR always gets a free pass D1 because (according to goldie and others) Mafia will lynch him N1 or N2 if he isn't scum.

xorxes what's your opinion on everything that's happened so far?
xorxes (31128 D)

I haven't seen any convincing arguments yet. The argument against civ for starting with "So, anyways..." was... imaginative.
Ikaneko (97 D)
07 Feb 17 UTC
I think we should bring others into this.

@all
a) Do you believe that people should not contribute on D1?
b) Other than voting, how else can we apply pressure on those who do not contribute?

If you agree with a) and do not find an appropriate or sufficient alternative for b), then what's your excuse.

At this point in the game, we should be trying to ascertain as much as possible about everyone before making our verdict, and if we do not ensure that everyone contributes to a sufficient level, then we are simply hindering ourselves.
Yeah, 23 hours in we should hear from the lurkers by now. HR and Peterlund are the only ones who have yet to talk, according to peterlund's site.

Since xorxes is working on HR, I shall ##vote Peterlund to get him to join us
snowy801 (591 D)
07 Feb 17 UTC
@xorxes Is that all you have to say about what happened so far? You're walking in here nearly a day into the game, say nothing of value and take a stance against lurkers as if you're not guilty of being one yourself.

If we are to policy lynch a lurker, I move that the potential targets of the lynch include all players who do not contribute, and not just the two players who have said nothing thus far. To name a few: bo_sox, captainmeme, ezio and zorclex on top of the people who have already been mentioned.

I have been using all evening to read up on the first 23 hours of the game, while also playing finals. I became a boring VT again. At game start, last midnight my time, I was only trying to make sure that the bot behaved reasonable well after all my refactoring of the code the last couple of weeks since after last game. And it did. Just fixed one single bug with a missing deadline schedule this morning.

Tuesday evening after work I surf in to the bot's thread reader (http://mafia.peterlund.se/e/web/msgs?part=p1-19) and catch up with the thread in a couple of hours. Imagine how much less traffic to webdiplomacy.net this results in. This text I write in the a normal text editor on my laptop.

Reading the thread reader I discover a bug. Some messages were duplicated. Asked the bot to reread from file and that issue fixed, but H.T.F. could that have happened in the first place?
Maniac (184 D(B))

Nah we shouldn't vote Vash of for not contributing. His contributions aren't usually worth much anyway so we're not missing much. (love you Vash).

civwarbuff, Day-1 46:32, page 3 wrote: "Alright, great. Thanks. As of now, I have essentially nothing other than the fact that brainbomb finds me suspicious, for some reason."

That last piece "for some reason" sounds intriguing, like he was surprised that his fellow scum is bussing him!

... and immediately Brain was telling civwar, presumably his fellow scum, to not be so cryptic and not to sound so scummy:

brainbomb, Day-1 46:31, page 3 wrote: ' "So... anyways...."?? Was there something you didnt like? Were you not amused? What? Why post "so anyways" '

civwarbuff, Day-1 46:11, page 3 wrote: "It does not seem like there is too much to talk about yet, is there?"

Everything civwar says seems so ... constructed, forced and overly careful, like he is very afraid of being perceived as being too silent so he must say something, but then again he is also being very afraid of slipping, so it becomes short, unnatural and strained ...

##VOTE civwarbuff

I also noticed the duplicate messages. If it's not too much trouble, could I ask for a way to isolate individual posters' messages? If it is too much trouble, then never mind.

If you've caught up on the discussions you must have some thoughts. Please share them.

##VOTE HR

And on the other side this Brain/Gold interactions (around page 8) has really caught my eye too. Seems like something is not right/normal here. One may be scum big time or is it even 2 scum bussing each other?

Vash attitude to this game is irritating to say the least. Childishly demonstrating his intentional lurking. Not nice at all! Almost worth a vote.
Ikaneko (97 D)
07 Feb 17 UTC
Thanks for your contribution. To clarify, you allege that:
Civwarbuff is scum *with* Brain?

This is what Vashta needs to be doing.
Maniac (184 D(B))
07 Feb 17 UTC
i don't get this voting for pressure idea either. Has anyone ever been lurking away as Town or Scum and seen a vote on them and thought 'damn my lurking days are over.'?
snowy801 (591 D)
07 Feb 17 UTC
Does anyone else have thoughts on xorxes' easy dismissal of civwarbuff's scumminess? Even if you don't necessarily agree with his being mafia it's still an interaction worth noting, and I'm curious why xorxes is so certain it's nothing to worry about.
snowy801 (591 D)
07 Feb 17 UTC
@Maniac yes, because either your lurking days are over or your playing days are over. The very fact that everyone here signed up to play means that the choice is obvious.

Noting, once again, that Maniac has made another useless or potentially misleading comment without adding any reads or insight.
peterlund (1310 D(G))

Gold on page 4 said "Typically, by now, some newbie has said something stupid and..."

See http://mafia.peterlund.se/e/web/msgs?word=%22newbie+has+said+something+stupid%22

This is odd! Whom of the newbies is Gold protecting is my question?
Ikaneko (97 D)
07 Feb 17 UTC
@Maniac That's kind of useless, everyone agreeing to vote for lurkers will necessarily mean that lurkers will have to post. Trying to shield someone?
Tom Bombadil (4023 D(G))
07 Feb 17 UTC
I don't like this vibe I get from snowy where everyone who doesn't post is lurky and scummy, and everyone who doesn't post as much as him is adding nothing of substance to the game. Snowy, who do you list among players who have contributed insight to the game thus far?

Also, if you think Maniac is "very scummy" why aren't you voting for him?

@civwarbuff: please read the page http://mafia.peterlund.se/PlayerVoting.html

xorxes, Day-1 25:31, page 11 wrote: "HR always gets a free pass D1 because (according to goldie and others) Mafia will lynch him N1 or N2 if he isn't scum."

Well HR was not NKed last game despite being town. I scum read him but to my surprise he was town.

23:27 pm my time, so I have only some few minutes more to go here before bed...

@ Maniac (and anyone else giving Vashta a pass)

I'm not voting Vashta for failing to contribute. People are busy. Things happen. Life intervenes.

I am voting Vashta for coming into the thread about a quarter of the way through D1 and outright declaring that he has no intention of participating in the game this phase. How can you defend that?

I suggest Vashta is relying on a "too awful to be scum" gambit. "Oh we can't lynch him for lurking because he said he was gonna lurk."

Fuck that. If you're willing to let an experienced player declare they aren't going to participate, as Vashta did, and give them a free pass, what's the point in anyone else taking part?

Not good enough.
Jamiet99uk (758 D)
07 Feb 17 UTC
I declare that I will not post again until Vashta does.

If you vote me for that, explain clearly why you won't vote for Vashta for doing exactly this.
