webDiplomacy 1.3
Hi all, released webDip 1.3, which actually doesn't contain any new features but makes the code easier to translate for developers. I'm deploying it here so it gets a good bug test before I release it, so please let me know if you spot anything odd or experience any errors.
(The next release will contain new features)

No, the state should not have the right to take away a person's life. If we think it is morally wrong for individuals to exercise this power (and self-defence should have limits) then there is no logical reason for a collection of humans (represented by a state, at least in a representative democracy) to have that right.

Likewise, war is morally wrong; though here self-defence can go a little further; especially if a state-like entity attacks another state-like entity, as the defence of state may require killing any attacking soldiers. (unfortunately this gets complicated when you have a state versus a non-state, as the division between soldier and terrorist harder to determine)

Castration will usually do the job...that is if victim actually survives. When victim dies, it is not merely rape, it is murder.

Few months ago in Croatia there was sick case of rape...One couple at the party separated so that they could spent some time together, but some time after girl was found unconscious in room fool of blood with her "boyfriend" near her. He claimed that they intended to make love but his "manly organ" failed to perform as he wanted so he tried to satisfy her with fingers. The sick part is that medical staff that inspected her found that few meters of her intestine was pulled out of her. She barely survived and will never be healthy again. Croatia is well known with mild sentences for crimes committed by kids of the powerful personas and there is danger that this boy will get out of this with ease.

I don't follow your argument, orathaic. It is wrong for individuals to take someone's life, true, but it is also wrong for individuals to lock someone away in their basement. Regardless of this I cannot think of a state on earth that doesn't do the latter, or a population that would argue against it.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
13 Jan 13 UTC
But it is not wrong for me to avoid a person, i can move to a different city if i don't want to see them.

Collectively a population can justify imprisonment as a seperation of themselves from individuals they do not wish to meet in a dark alley - like segregation.

Who cares about rapists? It's such a non-issue used by politicians because it draws emotion from the middle-voters and gives an illusion of danger that serves to validate government
Draugnar (0 DX)
13 Jan 13 UTC
If an individual has already proven to be a martal threat to others, the state is justified in executing them.in defense of the individual's other future victims especially if it is deemed this individual will never be reformed. Rape, however, is not mortal in the literal sense so execution for rape is out of the question. Life without parole, on the other hand, is a perfectly valid sentence for a unreformable rapist.

Remember that rape is rarely about sex. It is about control and power. Castration won't alter that desire for power and control as the rapist can use other appendages or even tools to rape.

India is not the country we should be looking at to determine our policies on rape...
Octavious (2701 D)
13 Jan 13 UTC
In this case in particular the victim was killed by the attack, and so the OP's suggestion that rapists are exectued in India is wrong. India is in fact seeking the death penalty for murder.

That being said I would support the death penalty for clear cut cases of rape. The fear of death would be an effective deterrent for rape in ways it isn't for murder, and underline its status as grossly unacceptable.

"Who cares about rapists? It's such a non-issue"

Probably not to the victims or the people who live in fear of rape or sexual violence. Statements like this make me realize that not everybody takes this issue seriously, maybe that is why it is till such a big issue in 2013.
dubmdell (556 D)
13 Jan 13 UTC
Octavious, I agree that for clear cut, undeniable cases of rape, the death penalty is valid and, honestly, the only morally acceptable answer. However, it will not work as a deterrent to rapists, it will only work as a deterrent to those raped to not report it. A high percentage of rapes already go unreported, and part of the reason (in my neck of the woods at least) is that girls don't want to ruin the rapist's life, or their own social life for that matter. Rape is also already hard to prove in many cases because most rapes that are reported (again, at least in my neck of the woods) are days after the crime and so the DNA evidence has left her system. I will debate this (these?) points with you, if you like.

All that said, rapists should be, at the very least, castrated and, ideally, executed.

I won't argue with any of you on my stance about rape. It is a personal issue to me, not just some hypothetical issue that I suspect it is for most people, politicians included.

"Octavious, I agree that for clear cut, undeniable cases of rape, the death penalty is valid and, honestly, the only morally acceptable answer. "

Two wrongs do not make a right. That is not my idea of morally acceptable.
Octavious (2701 D)
13 Jan 13 UTC
Allowing the victim to decide not to ask for the death penalty will counter any extra deterrent not to report it a death penalty would provide. To be honest though the rapist's life will be ruined death penalty or not. If a woman holds her desire not to ruin the rapist's life higher than her desire to punish the rapist and prevent further rapes then I fail to see what society can do for her.
orathaic (1009 D(B))
13 Jan 13 UTC
But then, i do not take this stance because the issue at stake is rape, I take this position for murders, paedophiles, terrorists, and Paris Hilton.
Octavious (2701 D)
13 Jan 13 UTC
I have a lot of sympathy for murderers. Plenty of murders are just decent people in extreme situations. Rapists, by way of contrast, are all scum.
SYnapse (0 DX)
13 Jan 13 UTC
I do not take this issue seriously at all, to rebut. Rape is an offense as damaging as getting your home burned down with all your possessions, or being shot in the kneecap. It is not at all like being killed, and for those of you who think it is, you obviously haven't seen many people killed, but have heard on the news a lot of people being raped, and find it easy to empathize with.
Octavious (2701 D)
13 Jan 13 UTC
Out of interest, SYnapse, how many people have you seen killed, and how many would you need to make it a lot? I've seen none. Coincidently I've also seen no rapes or kneecapings.

Noting for future reference that everything SYnapse says can be disregarded as the inane ramblings of a disconnecting-from-reality chauvinist.
SYnapse (0 DX)

Note: this also applies to males being raped, an offense which occurs daily in many prisons, but is not given half as much media attention as the innocent "Red Riding Hood" walking through a local park, whom we can all get very angry about, and wave our pitchforks.

On a side note, I find some of the opinions in this conversation really offensive (you may find this ironic). You people (the extremists) are the first to cry death and stink quite frankly of vigilantism when it comes to the idea of your loved ones (sister, mother, daughter) but tend to care nothing about the mass rape that occurs in the Congo on a daily basis.

I am not saying that rape is not a criminal offense, but it is definitely incomparable to the offense of murder, and if you can't distinguish between the two, I fear for peace in general. Out of the three groups of criminals that governments use to pass extremist policy - rapists, murderers and pedophiles, murderers are quite in a league of their own, but do not get the votes of parents reading their morning newspaper.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

You compared rape to property damage, you nut.
SYnapse (0 DX)
13 Jan 13 UTC
Anyway, I'm sure you all have perfectly good reasons for butchering and/or murdering people who stuck their penis in other people, but I can assure you that I say all these things having a mother who was raped in Africa while I was very young, and I really think there is a huge difference between having sex with somebody and shooting them in the head/kicking them to death etc.
SYnapse (0 DX)
13 Jan 13 UTC
In fact the whole mechanism of rape is usually that it is better than murder ie. "do this or I will kill you" and to suggest that it is the same as murder illegitimizes the argument that you can coerce someone into rape - because according to your logic women who are threatened like this may as well be murdered. Rant over, I'm out.

I think the biggest problem with executing rapists is that it could remove an incentive for the rapist not to kill his victim.
Pete U (293 D)
13 Jan 13 UTC
I think the biggest problem is that there is the chance that one innocent person could be executed, and the live of an innocent man isn't worth the live of a million rapists.

Lock them up for life, chemically castrate them - fine, by all means. Reversible in the case of a miscarriage of justice. Harder to bring the dead back to life.

Plus the deterrent is questionable - I'm be willing to bet most rapists don't expect to be caught (rather like most criminals)

Athiests, Christians, Monty Python fans and debaters alike - you must watch this clip!
This is an interview with John Cleese and Michael Palin after the release of "Life of Brian" and it is fucking brilliant. I absolutely love the way the educated English can sound so civil while hurling insults at each other. Al Swearington would be proud! It's refreshing to see 4 people argue with eachother so brilliantly, humorously and politely

I know the positives... I've thought about it for ages. According to all of you, thinking optimistically while maintaining a realistic view on what I can get is naive.
