Who wants a piece of this???
As some of you may have noticed, I've been discretely playing a random game here and there in the last bit. Having seen my last one end because a dumb ass resigned, I thought it was time for fiercer competition. Any takers?

I tried to click the +1 icon on a posting I liked, but it just jumps you to the top of the page. Presumably this is something to do with the earlier WebDip outage.

Live game start or cancel.
So the site was out of order for a while. A live gunboat is still to begin (although it's set a 'now'), it doesn't start, nor can anyone leave. Is there anything we can do about this situation?

Sargmacher has been banned
We don't normally discuss the details behind bans, but given the high visibility of this account and the inevitable questions that may arise, we have decided to make a statement to clarify matters.

WebDiplomacy Community,

Sargmacher has been banned for a rather extensive history of multi-accounting that spanned the entire time that he has been on this site. This involved cheating in dozens of games, using many accounts to avoid suspicion, and resulting in an inflated record and ranking.
We are posting this to reassure the community that:
1) This matter has been thoroughly examined by the entire moderator team, and we followed due process in coming to this decision, including extensive correspondence with the player before passing judgment. The player was highly evasive and deceptive, but did eventually admit to most of the infractions. Given the extent to which the system was abused, we decided that a ban was the only appropriate course of action.
2) We will do our best to be more vigilant in the future to prevent such extreme cases from developing in the first place.

Hopefully this will serve as a reminder that even well-known players are not above the rules. If you have multiple accounts, I'd encourage you to email the mods to notify us before we find them ourselves.

Also, since I was barely involved in this case, I'd just like to say that I was very impressed how the current mod/admin team handled everything.
Somehow I'm not surprised.

First they came for Sandgoose, and I didn't say anything, because, well, what do you say to a Sandgoose, really?

Then they came for Sargmarcher, and I didn't say anything, because, well, I didn't know him too well.

Then they came for m--!

(But I kid...sounds like you guys did a good job...though it is troubling more and more recognizable names seem to be getting caught.)

Who'd have thought a Lib-Dem would turn out to be nothing but a liar and a cheat?

In all seriousness, though, this does come as something of a surprise. A dirty business, but weeding out the weak has to be done.

I think this is stupid. Sargmacher brought net benefit to the site and was a valuable member of the community. Assuming this is the first time he was caught, he shouldnt banned - it doesnt benefit the site and it doesnt fit with precedent. It seems like punishments are way too draconian lately. Whats the point of it?

On another note, jmo is a terrible mod who is way too overeager about banning players points, docking, locking threads, etc. For example, the no talking about ongoing gunboats used to just be a norm of etiquette that prevented substantial diplomatic talk in the forum. Now it appears to be a hard and fast rule where you arent even allowed to rally people to cancel in 1901 or whatever.

sarge huh You know, one day he whined about me talking about an on going game (that was 1 turn from finishing) and called me a cheater, and should be banned. Interesting how the ones who point their fingers the most are usually the ones who are guilty of the crimes.
Willtor (113 D)

@Obi:

Since it's multi-accounting, you might even say:

First they came for Sandgoose, and I didn't say anything because I wasn't Sandgoose. Then they came for Sargmarcher, and I didn't say anything because I wasn't Sargmarcher.

;)

But, seriously, thanks admins for your vigilance. It builds confidence in the legitimacy of the games in which one participates.

@Frank

This is not the first time he was caught. He had systematically cheated dozens of people for months and showed no remorse when confronted.
zultar (4180 DMod(P))

Looking at Frank's comment, I'm going to clarify a few things. The entire mod team was heavily involved in this case. It wasn't just jmo. He is just the one to post the message. Moreover, Kestas was informed before hand and he agreed with our decision. Kestas might very well choose to post in this thread.
Regardless, we are not going to discuss what Sarg has done other than what Jmo has already revealed. We do not like banning people. We only do it as a last resort.
yebellz (729 D(G))

@Frank, this was a matter examined by the entire moderator team and we made this decision together. This was an extensive case of cheating, spanning nearly two years and his entire time on this website, that ruined over 50 games, through systematic abuse to avoid detection and inflate records and ghost ranking.

I don't understand the desire to win that way, but w/e screw him.
While I did enjoy playing with him (at times) and will say that I'll miss him, a cheater is a cheater and the punishment fits the crime.

But I must admit I am curious about who his multis were. I was in the Leagues with him shortly after he joined and some of the play now looks suspicious when viewed in this light.

Frank reading comprehension ftw.
I always thought his play was suspicious but I always stopped myself because he was such a highly respected player. I remember some games where I was playing a anon was ready to accuse someone of cheating and when I saw it was Sarg I said "well it couldn't be true"

After a brief look at Sarg's games it appears most of his treachery to the community was committed in gunboats. Is it generally true that gunboats have a larger multi problem than the traditional game? I say this as I hardly ever play gunboat and have rarely been in a game spoilt by cheating.

@Frank, all members are more then welcome to appeal any decision to the admin's if you feel a decision made by a moderator was inappropriate.
I'd like to say, I don't know what changed, but I appreciate that mods are finally disposing of the good old boy approach to enforcing rules around here and are actually applying them equally. I had quite a few problems early on with Mods who blatantly favored established players. I'm glad to see this is changing.

Such a bad example for the young ones. What if CM makes a multi because of your influence, Sarg? Have you thought about that? Have you thought about the threads he'll make about his multi touching him inappropriately?

I hope the Mods have a system that will keep him (and other cheaters) from returning with a different username.

Had a chance to explain American politics today
It was an interesting opportunity. It started with my coworker asking about the electoral college and evolved into a general question of how American politics works. Her reaction was mixed. I know we log on here every day and gripe about how our politics suck, but after my holistic explanation, I feel almost grateful we have politics to gripe about. Our problems really aren't that bad. (Unless Romney/ Ryan wins, jk! not really.)

Game
In commemoration of a string of high-profile bans lately, I've created a game to celebrate. I am looking forward to decreasing the number of games "infected" by a multi from 45% to about 10%, which is what mine is. If you want the password, message me. Don't play if you're a multi because the mods will be keeping close tabs on all of us I'm sure.
