Magnavox Micromatic Cabinet Record Player
So, I bought a Magnavox Micromatic Cabinet Record Player circa 1968 at Goodwill today. I've never been a huge audiophile but this is still one of the best purchases I've ever made. I'm particularly impressed I was able to plug it in after more than 40 years and have it work right away.

Automatic Cancel
How come games that start with less than 7 players don't automatically cancel? If 2 or more countries don't even show up in a live game why does the system allow it be voted on? It seems like the countries that can get an immediate jump have no incentive to cancel.

I was a right shit to my parents at times at 15, especially my father, sure, who isn't as a teenaged boy...but if I'd EVER done or said what she did, I'd have been parented and HOW...and I'd NEVER post something that disrespectful on Facebook like that...but--her father works for Information Technology, and she did that and thought it was smart? Good for him, I say, good parenting...agree?

Malvinas War Part II?

*They* claim *we* are militarising the region! How much bigger are their armed forces than ours? It's just posturing.

Cameron, in an attack of massively short-sighted idiocy, may have given away our aircraft carriers, so we couldn't retake the islands if we lost them; but compare how big our forces down there were 30 years ago to how big they are now. I think it's unlikely the Argies would try to take the islands. They would sustain massive losses if they did. We've got nuclear powered subs down there, so their fleet could be stopped before it got near the islands and our fighter aircraft and anti-aircraft systems would make it unlikely an airborne invasion of West Falkland would be attempted. I don't know what defensive capability we have on East Falkland. I don't think it's much though.

A nasty suspicion creeps into my mind - The Argies get West Falkland and we keep East Falkland and we both share the oil, fishing rights and of course the mineral rights in those areas of the Antarctic that we can lay claim to because of the islands. Anyone want to give odds that the politicians (ours and theirs) have already agreed this "sensible solution" between themselves?
Octavious (2701 D)
08 Feb 12 UTC
The Argies don't have a hope of taking the Falklands. They're properly defended this time with a good sized group of soldiers and, more importantly, a dedicated RAF presence. Whether there is a slightly newer version of Royal Navy frigate in the area or not doesn't really make a great deal of difference.

What does amaze me is the fact that this recent wave of Argentine Imperialism seems to be led by the left wing. I was wondering if Putin could give any insights as to why this is?
Octavious (2701 D)
08 Feb 12 UTC
@ Speaker

Not a chance. Aside from the fundamental injustice of such a solution, it would be political suicide for any Prime Minister to agree to it.
A massive first strike could neutralize a lot of the RAF presence on the island, and the overall British military presence there is decreased, but that "slightly newer version of Royal Navy frigate" is the most sophisticated ship-born anti-aircraft weapon made and can target several hundred objects independently. That shit is a crazy vessel.

But still, all the Brits are doing is defensive posturing. It's not like that ship can attack Argentina. They can only defend. Argentina is just trying to use the political system and the media to get the islands back
Xapi (194 D)
09 Feb 12 UTC
I find it laughable (really, I laugh) that people are considering an Argentinian military incursion on the islands, and the use of the phrase "Argentinian Imperialism" is somthing that has me really baffled.

Argentina is working for a diplomatic solution, to wich the UK has no interest (basically, because the UK is happy with the military solution).

Our president will keep the political and maybe economical pressure, and that is and will be all.

Where are you reading news, that you consider an argentinian attack even remoltely possible?
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 12 UTC
Who cares about the UK's nuclear subs or anything else. The Malvinas occupiers are completely dependent on the good will of the South Americans for their transportation and food needs. Good luck with that.

And yes Xapi, I am as baffled by you by Octavious's claim of Argentine "imperialism". The British, whose name is synonymous with imperialism, accusing the Argentines of imperialism. That's like Japan accusing China for being "imperialist" for wanting Taiwan and Manchuria back.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 12 UTC
But that is the tactic of the right, to hijack terms like racism, imperialism and whatnot for their own misplaced sense of grievance.
youradhere (1345 D)

Can someone remind me why the Falklands *don't* belong to Argentina? The whole situation seems a little archaic.
Xapi (194 D)
09 Feb 12 UTC
They were basically occupied in 1833, when Argentina was in the process of establishing itself as a nation (There was an appointed governor in the Island, and some population if I'm not mistaken).

The UK has kept a mix of military and civil population on the island ever since.
Britain had a presence there, had to leave but never relinquished a claim. An American captain made a claim for what became argentina which in turn grew into a colony. The British, unhappy with this, (re?)took the island.
spyman (424 D(G))

The falkland islands should belong to the Falkland Islanders. The Islands were unoccupied before European discovery. The current inhabitants trace back to the earliest permanent inhabitants of the Islands. Thus if they want to go with Argentina that is their perogative, but if they want to stay with the Uk then who is to argue?
NikeFlash (140 D)
09 Feb 12 UTC
The trolls on here.
Spyman has it right. The people of the Falklands wish to remain British, end of discussion. The right to self-determination has been around for a while now, i don't know why we are still arguing about it.
And if Argentina does wish to start another war, good luck to them. They'll just get their arses kicked once again.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 12 UTC
"The Islands were unoccupied before European discovery."

And what of the fact that Argentines and Argentine administration were expelled from the island once the British came back in 1833? The British left voluntarily & then came back and used brute force to establish a colony. This is a Rhodesian style "self-determination" argument.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 12 UTC
But I guess the English speaking people believe that anywhere they plant their flag they can get a claim to "self-determination", the people living in the place be damned.

Argentina was one of the world's top economies back in the early part of the 20th century when the London investment scene pulled the rug out from under the folks in Buenos Aires. I assume that, like Iran, Argentineans have had it out for the UK ever since. And like with Iran, it's just too bad for Argentina that the US-UK alliance is eternal.
Putin33 (111 D)

"The people of the Falklands wish to remain British, end of discussion."

The people of Danzig want to remain German, end of discussion. Oh wait.

I don't quite get the analogy with Danzig.

Do the Falkland Islanders not want to be British? I was of the impression that the majority had an affinity for the UK.
The Islanders want to stay with Britain. So the reason you think that a change of ownership should be forced on them is because under your interpretation Argentina had the first sustained claim. It isn't bout people, it is about who planted their flag most firmly back in The early to mid Nineteenth Century, again, about flags and rocks, not people. Your stance is that Argentina are the rightful owners of the island so the current residents should deal with it.

It isn't rhodesia with a oppressed majority being held under by a powerful minority, this isn't remotely like China's claims on taiwan which were hundreds of years of history as opposed to barely a hundred months of Argentine control of the Falklands. Terrible analogy's to Argentina's claims which is based purely on nationalism
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 12 UTC
"I don't quite get the analogy with Danzig."

The residents of the "Free City" of Gdansk most assuredly wanted to be part of the German Empire, and voted overwhelmingly for the NSDAP. World War II began because of this issue of "self-determination", which the British denied then but somehow the Malvinas are different.

"I was of the impression that the majority had an affinity for the UK."

The majority is British because they expelled the Argentines and currently ban Argentines from even visiting the islands, let alone moving there. Any Argentine who manages to get in is treated like a spy.

"The early to mid Nineteenth Century, again, about flags and rocks, not people."

Because the Spanish inhabitants of Malvinas in the 1800s were not actually people. Not white enough I guess.
Putin33 (111 D)

"Terrible analogy's to Argentina's claims which is based purely on nationalism"

Hong Kong was "uninhabited" until the British took it, Britain has a better claim to Hong Kong than it does the Argentine Malvinas. You can't steal a piece of a country and then whine when the victims want it back just because you created facts on the ground by brute force that favor your position. I know the Ulster Scots like to make this kind of claim in Northern Ireland and the Israelis think they took over an empty desert, but it's just bullshit.
yes a few settlers in 1833 are enough to hold a claim on the island in 2012. Show me the suffering colonies of ex Falklanders who are waiting for their chance to repopulate the island. By some accounts they stayed on the island.

And believe me the spanish settlers of Argentina would have been just as "white" as the British.
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 12 UTC
"Show me the suffering colonies of ex Falklanders who are waiting for their chance to repopulate the island"

So your argument is because the population is small that means you can just invade a piece of a country, annex it, settle it, and then it becomes yours forever?

The British left in 1794. How they manage to have this continuous uninterpreted claim to the islands when they weren't even the first Europeans to settle there (the French were) is beyond me. So what claim do the British have other than they succeeded in expelling the Argentines in 1833 and then banned any more from settling?
Putin's position:

Override the wishes of the island's inhabitants to honor the memories of a small colony of Argentines who died 150 years ago, possibly quite happy to be subjects of the King of England. Perhaps while we are at it the Swedish should re-invade southern New Jersey
Putin33 (111 D)
09 Feb 12 UTC
"And believe me the spanish settlers of Argentina would have been just as "white" as the British."

Well I'm trying to figure out why you keep claiming the islands were uninhabited, and why Spanish speaking people are "rocks".
