Ethics of replacing CDs
Would it be frowned on to find a replacement you know is pliable? In effect, is it okay to take the game into consideration in terms of your hunt for a replacement (or lack thereof)? I feel this is under-discussed, compared to, say, pauses.

Do boycotts work? Should we boycott a pape and their sister papers and put in jeperdy the careers of innocent workers? Should we support advertisers pulling their adverts and protest against companies who don't pull their ads?

Game will start on next process cycle
How long is a 'process cycle' concerning a live 5 min/phase game?
I just ask because I joined such a game and ended up CDing against my will after waiting for 2 hours for it to start.

Diplomacy strategy articles?
I'm pretty familiar with openings... and general concepts for the mid and late game... and have read the articles available on these topics in the Diplomatic pouch (diplom.org) and the Diplomacy Archive (diplomacy-archive.com)... Where can I learn more about more specific strategies beyond the openings in 1901? Or, at least, where can I find more good articles beyond these two sources? Thanks!

How to Actually Fix the 500 Errors
Instead of complaining about them, let's try and have a productive discussion about what we, as a community, would accept to make them go away.

The way I see it, there are pretty much two options: More money for a better server or less demand so we can use the one we have.

In terms of money, I think the best way to generate that is ads. I know many have long been opposed to ads on the site, but I, personally, have no objection, and I think they may become needed to finance it. And hey, if Kestas starts to turn a profit, I'm not going to complain. I know he turned off Plura and is paying for this out of his own pockets, which I guess means he's paying the mod salaries out of his own pocket too, since they don't get their plura checks anymore...

Anyway, in terms of reducing demand, this would most likely require a significant amount of coding work. I could see where limiting the site to one or two active live games at a time would help - or setting a cap on registration, since a continuation of the influx of new users that we've experienced over the past year (?) may make the site untenable.

Another thing, and I don't know if this is even possible, is to limit a user to accessing a new page or refreshing once every, say, 15 seconds. I know I commonly will constantly refresh during a live game, which I'm sure is terrible for the server.

Alternatively, if we could incorporate some form of live updating, that would eliminate entirely the need to refresh, making the problem disappear entirely. Of course, this wouldn't work if it created more of a load on the server than it eliminated.

So what are your thoughts? What are good ways to address the issue, and what are we, as a community, willing to accept in terms of ads, etc.?

Can people donate for a better server?
Geofram (130 D(B))

Donate button is in the FAQ under "Helping out"
☺ (1304 D)
12 Jul 11 UTC
Current donations don't pay for the server we have, Furball. Kestas pays the rest out of pocket. So I don't think that's realistic.

12 Jul 11 UTC
That being said, absolutely go ahead and donate. :-)
Ads are fine by me. I'm not sure I like the less demand option -- would definitely prefer increased revenue to decreased expenditure.
and yeah, I second lol @ mod salaries

I agree with you Ads are the best option, Eden. But I think Kestas is the one who leads the charge against ads...
I know. I'd be interested in the rationale -- I'm sure kestas has a good one, and I suspect there's got to be something I'm missing, but I'm not sure what the exact hangup is with ads.

I'd rather paypal knowing that a portion goes to cover newebies for 6 months. 508 active games X 7. Take out for duplications of players and add a figure to allow noobs to play.

Advertisements can be a pain in the ass to manage compared to their return. Or they can be really easy to manage and not return much at all. I wouldn't mind to see some google adsense going on. As long as the ads aren't on-purpose annoying and don't take away from the performance of the site, I'm happy to see them.

I'd also like to see more incentive to donate. People would donate more if they got to tell people about it. Make someone's nametag in the forums change colours depending on how much they've donated. (This is also a better way to show mods) Also make the donation button easier to find, most people don't even know about it.
dexter morgan (225 D(S))
12 Jul 11 UTC
Donate is step one. I've donated before, I'll donate again. It feels good - I recommend it. Give up a soda a week and put the money toward the game and site you love. Easy.

Reduced service probably wouldn't even make a significant diference... isn't this on a shared server - i.e. other websites effect us as we share the same hardware, right? Reduced service is already what we're getting with these server problems... so I'm not sure we'd be gaining anything in the bargain anyway.

Ads suck - but I'd still come here so long as the ads were not pop-ups or with sound. I actively avoid sites that do that.

"...or give points for donating :-)"

Oh, I don't know. It's almost worth it just to see the looks on noobs faces when they realise that the points they've just spent their beer money on aren't really worth anything. Of course, to achieve that you would have to allow them to post pictures of said faces on their profile pages... We could charge them for that aswell :D!...

Here are some questions I think we need to answer before we can move on:

How much does the current server cost per month?
How much would a server cost that can meet our current demand?
^agreed. Now if only I knew the answer to either...

I like very much the idea of the nametags changing colors based based on how much they've donated... it would reinforce/reward donation without something screwy like giving points (I was joking on that).
krellin (80 DX)

1. Ads -- go for it. Harmless and *very* easily ignored...unless Kestas actually has some good causes/interesting things to advertise. Like it or not, advertising is not *always* a bad thing. I'm sure "capitalism" pays for this site already (whoever is paying the bills, they have a job)....so embrace it.

2. *Love* the idea of changing screen names for donators. It is harmless (as opposed to pay-for-points, which could allow noobs to buy into games they should not be in) and would demonstrate to the community just what sort of commitment people have. I confess, I have never donated -- In all honesty, I never saw/looked for a donate button (it just wasn't on my radar!). But I will donate now that I know where to find the button...
krellin (80 DX)

Seriously....that donate link was a link to a page of questions that had a question "can I donate" that opens up a link if you click it. OK, I know the site is full of anti-capitalists, but seriously, *TRY* to make money. *TRY* to encourage donations by actually making the donation link *OBVIOUS*. Clearly nobody here is in marketing...
Geofram (130 D(B))
13 Jul 11 UTC
Yep. I think a tiered system of flavour rewards (like changing name colour) is the best way to encourage donations.

$5 = violet (expires at a rate that keeps the server alive) maybe three months?
$10 = green (expires at a rate that keeps the server alive) maybe six months?
$20 = yellow (expires at a rate that keeps the server alive) maybe a year?
$50 = orange (two years?)
Admin = red

And donations can be cumulative per account. So if you pay to be violet twice (6 months) and then green once, you'll automatically get bumped to yellow for a year.

And in any combination, if you reach $50, you get orange.

If it was August 1939, and you were a German, Aryan male aged 22 and were offered to join the SS (and you had no knowledge about what was to come) do you think you would have been smart enough to say no? I Have An Honest Question Here...
This one's bugged me for a while, really, and I've just got to ask it:

If you believe God sent Jesus to die for our sins or that Jesus wanted to die for our sins and save us and all that...why? If he/they/both are God, ie, almighty, why not just "waive the debt," rather than self-mutilate? And why would either care at all? (and "because he loves us" is NOT a valid answer...somehow Hell + Pain On a Cross =/= LOVE to me...)
