We had this project. We had to make a device that could measure time, without using mechanical parts. Its parts also had to fit into a cardboard file box. My parther's and mine, was about a half-inch taller than the box. The lid could rest on top easily. We could have taken the top part of the timer off and duct-taped it when it was time to set up on the day of the competition (there would be a competition between the timers). My partner's mom said that it would be fine if the box didn't close as long as the lid stayed on top, and this way it was better so that we didn't have to worry about anything last-minute. I agreed, because I though the penalty for not fitting was going to be 10-20

(it never said in the rules). When we got to the competition, sure enough, it was too big, but only by half-an-inch. But even so, my science teacher gave us a 180 point penalty. We got last place and a C-. If we didn't have that penalty, we would have had a B. I don't see why my teacher maked us down 180

for not fitting by an less than an inch. So, my science teacher (and my friend/partner's mom) is a stubborn asshole.
