Averages
I'm curious as to the age of most people on this site, as well as to their general location (eg, country.)

I imagine that it's fairly widespread.

Preference Lists
I am asking this here to see if it is popular.
Would people like to enter games with a list of prefered powers in order?
A recent poster said he did not like Italy, while that is my favourite. Oddly I dislike playing England and Turkey. Would this be hard to code?

why is the colonial diplomacy variant inactivated?
anyone know if it was for technical reasons etc?
Tom2010 (160 D)

That's a good question. I would think it's at least as "classic" as the Med map.

Cololonialism is dead.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

I think it is a somewhat arbitrary choice.

Do you mean here or somewhere else? It was never activated here because kestas wants to make certain any variant on the site is solid and bug free *and* he doesn't want an overabundance of variants.

diplomat61,

Colonialism is not dead. Take French New Guinea for example. France has practically direct control over the territory just north of Brazil. The European Space Agency even lauches a few craft from French New Guinea.
yayager (384 D)

You mean French Guiana? It's legally a part of France, not a colony.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))
03 Sep 10 UTC
Yes, I meant that. I am asleep or something.
StevenC. (1047 D(B))

Aren't colonies legally attached to their host countries as well?

orathaic (1009 D(B))

that all depends on the legal situation in any given area at the time...

The Kingdom of Ireland was united with the Kingdom of Great Britian in ~1800 to create the United Kingdom (of Great Britian and Ireland)

so at that point in history Ireland wasn't a British colony the two formed one kingdom - previous to that the two kingdoms were in a personal union - ie two kingdoms unified under one King/Queen (previous to that again it had been a personal union between the kingdoms of England and Ireland and Scotland) - however previous to that again the English had control over only small areas of Ireland (and planted settlers) who would probably have been considered colonists.

The legal defiition is a little bit messy and i'm not sure what the importance is.
Anyone else see what diplomat did there with "coLOLonialism"? =P

I cannot take credit for cololonialism it that was a typo.

The point was meant as a joke.

That's a pretty epic typo.

I for one, sincerely think that Colonial Dip has absolute enough merit to be implemented here! It is also one of the most established variants out there , so!
but of course, it is a total hassle for kestas :(
orathaic (1009 D(B))
03 Sep 10 UTC
not a hassle, variants implemented on otehr sites are all compatible with this site, at present it's almost a case of drag and drop (the folder... then a few lines to copy and paste)

However, Kestas has said he doesn't want to implement them here - go to olidip if you want to play!

Understandable points on both ends. I don't want to give Kestas any more work than he already has, but if enough interest was displayed in the variant do you think Kestas would reconsider? I've played several Colonial games and love the variant.

I just read some supporting articles on Coldip, and I thought it would be an interesting play. Interestingly what interested me is the fact that the powers are *not* very balanced, making for interesting different styles of play necessary depending on your country. I like this site, but will check out olidip, thanks for the tip.

wow, OliDip is like the evil twin of this site. I feel like I am in the ST episode where Spock had a mustache.
killer135 (100 D)

olidip has no players though, like a ghost town. near impossible to get a live game going. but if this site had those variant, or just like one or two of those variants olidip has, then it would be fairly easy to start a live one up.

to second killer: if live-game-loving people wanted to make olidip accounts (that haven't done so already)...I'm sure the rest of us would think it would be lots of fun. :D

same as on here, 1 day phases, more if needed, and we test out oli's different variants.
digitsu (1254 D)
05 Sep 10 UTC
well I started a game on olidip, so those who want to play please join.
As for it not being on here... I have no issues with it. But I may point out that if you aren't going to, or never did support a variant, then why bother mentioning it on the Variants page?? Makes it sound like you turned it off for some reason.

The colonial variant still has some rules not implemented (eg. the railroad and the Suez-Canal).
digitsu (1254 D)

No railroad? hmm that takes a lot out of the game then. I guess that makes sense why its not implemented here then.

I'm kind of new to the site but I understand people have more than one account and play in games with those other accounts to cheat. Would having a second account but you don't use it to cheat be against the rules?
