Serious question concerning Ghost Ratings and games...
If seven players wanted to play a game and not have it counted for GR purposes, could that be accommodated? A bit like choosing WTA or PPSC, we would have a button for GR // non-GR.

Why the kids?
In soccer matches, when the teams line up and the National Anthems are played, why are there little kids standing in front of them (in this World Cup little African kids) awkwardly - these large men with their hands on the shoulders of these scrawny little kids?

Support - have I been playing wrong all these years???
Hey - I am confused on an issue of supporting.
Example: DEN-s-KIE, BAL.Sea-s-DEN and NS-DEN
...why is the support at DEN cut to KIE?
I was under the impression that this situation would result in KIE being supported and that if KIE was being attacked by a unit with another supporting it into KIE that it would be a stand-off. Somehow I have managed to survive a lot of situations despite this appearing to be the case...Have I really got this wrong?

Sitter needed for 2 league games.
I will be in need of a sitter for my league games for two weeks in July. I'll be vacationing at a lake house from July 10 through July 17 with no internet access, then will be on retreat from July 23 through August 1, again with no internet access. Please let me know if you are able to fill in. The links to the games are below, and a third one will be starting shortly. I'll email my password out to whoever can commit to both. Thanks in advance for your help!!

This Time On Philosophy Weekly: But You Don't Really Care For Music (Do You?)
Plato certainly didn't seem to have a problem banning a good deal of music (including whole styles and instruments) in his ideal Republic...however, Kant and Nietzsche both agreed (a RARITY) on the importance of music, Nietzsche going so far as to infamously claim "Without music, life would be a mistake." (And to prove I'm a Nietzsche dork- my favorite composition of his.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yoFL6C2Rjw&feature=related How important IS music? Which kinds? To whom?

Possibly the Worst Argument Against Evolution and Worst Use of Peanut Butter EVER!
I hate to open the can of worms twice ina day (I've already done my "This Week in Philosophy" bit...) but this isn't a can of worms, folks.

It's a can of peanut butter- and apparently, it totally can be used to disprove and and all arguments for evolution...yep...screw Darwin and screw priests, folks- the answer was with peanut butter all along! :O http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FZFG5PKw504&feature=related

I don't really understand how that disproves evolution. It just proves that life cannot come from a non living thing. How does it prove that a living thing cannot evolve into a "better" living thing?
PettyOfficer117 (0 DX)

Very very weak point and doesnt prove anything.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Jul 10 UTC
Wow, I actually felt embarrassed watching that. I really don't understand this notion that evolution can't be true because we lack an explanation for a prime mover. It really makes no sense to me.

Furthermore, how do we know there isn't new life inside peanutbutter? Do they really expect a monkey to pop out of a jar? No, they would be microscopic. Talk about worst argument ever.

peanut butter supports life
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Jul 10 UTC
Actually, what I really don't understand is why, to so many people, evolution and god are mutually exclusive. Wouldn't it be enough if he created an entire universe and set evolution in motion?
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
03 Jul 10 UTC
Ironically, the closest to an argument this comes, as I think someone said already, is it argues against spontaneous generation, life from nothing...

Which would seem to actually contradict the Biblical account rather than actual evolutionary ideals...
COTW (836 D)
03 Jul 10 UTC
what I mean is... if you eat it. Particularly with apricot jam.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))

Jam is murder!
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
03 Jul 10 UTC
and @abgemacht:

Precisely; I don't think we have a conception of what sort of higher power there is, but I do think, personally, that that's how life came to be, that higher power lit the fuse, so to speak,a dn evolution exploded us and thw world we have today onto the scene...

People are just too black-and-white about things...
COTW (836 D)

"Which would seem to actually contradict the Biblical account rather than actual evolutionary ideals..."

There are few things to which the scientific method cannot be applied. Religion is one of them.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Jul 10 UTC
@obiwan,

I think it would be hard to argue that that is an unreasonable view to hold.

Personally, I think the coolest scenario would be if the universe just came out of nothing. Of course, god/nothing, in either case, I ask: what before that?
The sad part about this video is that people buy it. Some people go to extreme to convince themselves that evolution does not exist, and to convince others that it doesn't. In my own church I've even seen people convince themselves that the degeneration of the human body is proof that evolution does not exist. If a human's body decays, wouldn't a species?

I'm a disbeliever in evolution myself (yeah, hate on me now), but this type of thing is ridiculous.
chamois (136 D)

@abgemacht : Christianism, Judaism and Islam cannot be true if Evolution is true :
Adam and Eve or whaterver they are named in English were immortals before eating the magic fruit. If they were immortal, how natural selection worked?
chamois (136 D)
03 Jul 10 UTC
so God couldn't have creat them through natural selection etc... They want the bible to be litteraly true.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Jul 10 UTC
@chamois

I'll try to say this as politely as possible:

Do you believe in everything in the bible is literal? If so, then you aren't a very decent person. If not, then why can't Adam and Eve also be non-literal?
warsprite (152 D)
03 Jul 10 UTC
What they refuse to take into account is that a few billion jars a year for a hundred years is not enoff time or units. A new planet has trillions of units since you have an entire planet surface with the additional volume of the oceans miles deep, and the energy input is continius over millions of years. Than you also need to look at the energy levels needed to trigger an event. Your talking about UV, electrical discharges, and, or temps of moltan rock, much higher than levels used in pasturizing.
chamois (136 D)

I don't believe in god, but most religious believe that what is said in the bible is litteraly true, that what I said : I don't see what you must help yourself stay polite.

No the UV level from them would not anything like earth without the ozone. Maybe a tanning bed. :)
COTW (836 D)

The universe expands for billions of light years and has billions of galaxies and has lasted for billions of years. Considering the fine detail to which we can reduce and study matter (life is inversely minute to the size of the universe), I think it is rediculous to consider the source of this existence as 'accidental' or 'not divine'. I think it is equally rediculous to form governing scientific theories as to how the universe was created. Talk about a no win situation, time is better spent on Led Zeppelin.
abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Jul 10 UTC
@war

I propose an experiment: We each put a jar of peanut putter in a tanning bed. If one of us gets life, we know evolution is true. Otherwise, God is the winner.

@COTW

How did God form?

What I think would be a far more discussion worthy video, which I got from the 'related videos' of the Peanut Butter one is this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTYe_V2hOZ4&feature=related

@abgemacht You got one with bulbs that last a billion years?
COTW (836 D)

Once again abgemacht, incorrect use of peanut butter.
God always existed. Or, at least, God existed prior to the creation of the universe
obiwanobiwan (248 D)
03 Jul 10 UTC
@COTW:

I agree- but as they (the video's people) were trying to disprove atheism with...peanut butter science, and they opened the can of worms...well, if they start a "we can prove our view with science!" fight, then let the better science prevail...

But yeah, generally, science and religion shouldn't mix.

abgemacht (1076 D(G))
03 Jul 10 UTC
@jarad

I honestly have no idea what this guy is talking about.

@COTW

That's an explanation that I'm simply not satisfied with. To me, that's just really short-changing the remarkable universe we live in

@war

The real question is, do the preservatives in peanut butter have an adverse affect? I suggest you use regular peanut butter (as a control) and I'll use organic peanut butter (variable) Now, we're doing science!
COTW (836 D)
03 Jul 10 UTC
I couldn't watch the video (I'm running in safe mode and media player is disabled), but it sounds like hogwash. What is the basic argument?
COTW (836 D)
03 Jul 10 UTC
@abgemacht

I don't think it's short-changing anything besides us, in respect of the remarkable universe we live in
