Gunboat Strategy
How does strategy in gunboat games differ from that of regular diplomacy games? I played one a while back and was gone in the first 2 years. What do you differently in gunboat than in regular games?

Catholicism VS. Protestantism
I would like to hear the opinions of those on this site. I respect the position of atheism or otherwise, however I would appreciate responses that prefer one of the aforementioned religions/sects to the other and why.

I'm neither, but I would guess that 90% is because they're parents are Catholic or Protestant, and maybe 5% because one is easier or harder (some people like a "harder" religion) than the other, and 5% because of actual theological considerations. =P
Friendly Sword (636 D)

Catholicism, because it is the true church, and the true church is obviously the best one. Why is it the best church? Because the Catholic church is the true church of course.

It is further supported by the fatc that the Catholic interpretation is the best. It is the best of course, because Catholics make the best interpretations. This is because Catholicism is the best church. :)

My reasoning is impeccable, and anyone who disagrees with me is obviously a godless heathen on the on-ramp to the highway of hell.

@Friendly Sword
What do you mean the "true church".
It is heavily based on traditions from the middle ages that often have no evidence supporting them.
Protestants are a newer sect, yes, but are more based on the bible and have adapted more to the modern world on contemporary issues like contraception.
Evidence is a substandard word when relating to religion.
Acosmist (0 DX)

The thing about the Middle Ages is that there is actually a lot of excellent reasoning in it. Have you read, say, Aquinas? One cannot say he was full of unsupported assertions. That is one of the things impossible to say.

Hmm, Protestantism....

....because I feel that the Catholic faith puts too much emphasis on the saints rather than on God.
dave bishop (4694 D)
15 Oct 09 UTC
i think Aquinas was very clever in his philosophy in for God.
I'm more talking about the belief that Mary should have an altar for herself, that Christians should pray through saints to get to God, the unnecessary wealth of the churches and the fact that a priest or the Pope can override a teaching in the bible
Agreed with StevenC. The pope has more power than God does. Let's worship Mary because God chose her to be Jesus' earthly mother (even though he chooses everyone for their own purposes).

@dave bishop (aka Godless church corrupter)

Obviously you didn't read my post clearly. The Catholic Church IS the true church! It has been since Jesus was born and will be forever. This statement obviously doesn't need evidence right? I mean, c'mon, Catholics giving evidence for points of view!? Who do you think we are? Scientists?

Anyway,

All ye protestants had your little demonstration; please come back to the true church before the Pope, er, God gets really ticked off.

Not that we're concerned that Church attendence is steadily dropping worldwide and non-religious is persistently growing in all 'catholic' countries.... erk

"non-religious is persistently growing in all 'catholic' countries"

Is it? I was sure those countries were seeing a huge increase in religion. You know, a slightly different Abrahamic religion...
Friendly Sword (636 D)

Nope, not even Muhammad and his pals are enough to halt the demise of religious fervour in the west. :)

Friendly Sword,

I'm sorry, you say that the Catholic Church is the TRUE church and yet they deviate from their own teachings every day. Not to mention that they try to override biblical texts as they see fit.

Also, from what I've seen people tend to worship saints as if they were "mini-gods".
dave bishop (4694 D)

religion is on the decline when compared to overall population (growth). The church no longer has the power it had in the middle ages

StevenC. (1047 D(B))

I'd even go as far to say that the church will be a dead religion by next century at the rate people are converting to aetheism.

"hasn't africa had enough imperialist preachers in it's time?"

what did this have to do with native africans preaching to native africans about catholicism

also have you heard of ethiopia

do you know that that is a country

it used to be called Abyssinia if you don't know what I am saying

"I'd even go as far to say that the church will be a dead religion by next century at the rate people are converting to aetheism."

Is there a century when this wasn't said? Since, like 1600.

Is "aetheism" a religion about interstellar substances?

my question is would God care if you were catholic or protestant? or would he more so care about whether you are livign for him and are a beliver straight up.
Invictus (240 D)
15 Oct 09 UTC
He'd care more that you were Catholic or Protestant. Why? Because that's what the Catholic Church teaches. It's really that simple, people.

Jesus may be Jewish, but God is an old Italian man. Why else would He have His Church speak Latin?

Here is what the OP said:

"I would like to hear the opinions of those on this site. I respect the position of atheism or otherwise, however I would appreciate responses that prefer one of the aforementioned religions/sects to the other and why"

Some of you need to lay off the sarcasm and let the people who actually DO believe in one of these positions talk.

And seriously, I get the distinct impression that atheists feel the best way to make an argument is to belittle and mock anyone who disagrees with them. Do they honestly think that is going to help? Can't you guys break the mold a little bit?

Friendly Sword (636 D)

Don't worry Jacob, I don't only enjoy mocking the religious. Anyone is fair game in my view. The Catholic Church just makes a rather juicy target, tis all.

If are interested in having a debate about the finer points of Christian theology, I'd be delighted to oblige you.

We need a pause
Game: http://webdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=13961

We've been trying to pause for two turns now, but one player didn't submit it before the end of the first one, and then during the second he signed in a bunch of times and still didn't vote. Our Russia is away, and can't submit orders; can a mod please pause this game? Russia has also missed the unit destruction phase as a result of this; can that please be reset?
