Any buy-in under 50 I prefer 24 hour phases.

I did exactly the same thing a little while ago. I won't say exactly how it turned out so as not to influence this game, but Italy is more important than you'd think.

I'm in for this if it happens.

I tried this varient and had an AP and CP draw.

Hard to have a "Winner" in an alliance game. So go for PPSC

Yeah, I prefer 24 hour phases for normal games, I just figured a little extra time would be needed to cooridinate moves.

Still though, count me in for the game even with 24 hour turns.

Perhaps we should have a CD Italy.

In the one I did Italy went into the game undecided and could declare which side he was on whenever he wanted. Once he picked it was permanent, of course. This lead to each side promising him supply centers, like the Central powers offering Greece and the Allies Spain. I was Turkey and went so far as to offer Smyrna.

We had at least three Italies due to CDs, and I think two Austrias too. It would be nice to see how the game went with everyone being consistent.

Also, may I suggest no talking between alliances? Our Germany tried to make a deal for England and Russia not to attack in 1901, and I felt it really went against the spirit of the variant.

In this type of variant, is Italy allowed to change sides throughout the game, or does he become a permanent part of the alliance he chooses?

Italy's side selection will obviously have a huge effect on the game - if he sides with E/F/R, then it's Austria whose going to struggle and Russia will have some pressure relieved. Of course if he sides with G/AH/T, Russia's going to be fairly isolated and it's France who will find it tricky. Having no Italy will still isolate Russia, but it won't pressure France/Austria.

I think that once Italy has chosen sides he should have to stick to it, otherwise we're in a position where there are two solid alliances and nobody trusts the green guy.
