For less experianced players
I'm wondering if there are any other players who haven't been playing diplomacy for very long but are still intrested in trying a variant game. If so, please post and say what variant you would be interested in. I will try to start that game.

Why is it no one here seems to understand what Gunoat and No Press mean...
Are the players here that ignorant of postal play and the judges that they don't know the standard terms used for decades now? I even had one person ask me what A-H was.

We really need a section of the FAQ that covers the standard terms used in the hobby.

Alliances game, anyone?
Anybody up for a pre-set alliances game? I was thinking of the WWI alliances (England, France and Russia VS Germany, Austria and Turkey with Italy choosing a side at the start) Probably a low point buy in, let me know whose interested.

Looking for something to do right now?
We're doing a game at the speed of the board game: 15 minute phases (is not enforceable, you just have to promise to finalize and be able to play for say 3 or 4 hours).

Starting ASAP...

The Stimulus - for or against???
So I notice a lot of political discourse on this site - usually I dont participate as I do that elsewhere - but in this case, I felt that an ongoing discussion between me and <Captain James Tiberius Kirk> deserved a wider audience and discussion. what do you think of the stimulus plan?

Ghost-rating List
February Ghost-rating list.
A couple of changes have improved the algorithm, and increased the chances of players with low to middle game counts (less than 60, say) to reach higher scores. I have recalculated the January list with this change too.

There are a few discrepancies between the databases used between January and February, which have resulted in some games being missed on one or the other. I do not have time to sort this out just yet, although if time arises I shall check through and correct it where necessary.

Somehow I'm now 76th?

:O
!!!

I feel a bit suspicious of this ranking system. I mean, I'm good, but I'm certainly not that good in terms of my record at least from what I can tell.

What exactly are the differences between your new system and the old elo rankings?
Chrispminis (916 D)
03 Feb 09 UTC
Is it that surprising? It's not a gigantic leap for someone around your rank and you must have played decently well your last 3 games or played against top notch players.

thanks ghost - but I really think you should have posted the top 150, not just the top 100!!

(Guess where I'm at on the list ;-)
Last time I was 11....
now I'm 10! =D
Churchill (2280 D)
04 Feb 09 UTC
Norin- the caliber of players you've played may have influenced that. Your results are quite good. 45% win and most of them pretty good. Better than I can claim!

This said, 5 point jump! wooo

Oddly, this is the same-ish rating I get when I'm at full points 27/25
Churchill (2280 D)
04 Feb 09 UTC
Speaking of- Ghost you've got inflation!

The top spot went from 570 to 490 and #32 went from 265 to 277.

This said- I know it doesn't matter as it's a relative score.
Noirin (2827 D)
04 Feb 09 UTC
Yes, the average is good, but as I don't like high stakes games I've mostly played inexperienced players and I also haven't done well against any good player, so I'd expect my elo score to be smaller than, for example, figlesquidge's.

I would guess the system used gives too much importance to survivals or to the average.
Chrispminis (916 D)
04 Feb 09 UTC
Noirin, you need not be modest. You have a 5% defeated rate and a 45% win rate... that's a phenomenal win rate and a phenomenal defeated rate. Only Rait comes to mind with a higher win rate, and only TheMasterGamer and Edi comes to mind with a lower defeated rate.
Chrispminis (916 D)
04 Feb 09 UTC
The system gives importance to survivals because you play PPSC...
Chrispminis (916 D)
04 Feb 09 UTC
Perhaps the fact that Ivo managed to finish 18 games between Jan and Feb has to do with his plummet in rating? That's a LOT of games to take on...
aoe3rules (949 D)
04 Feb 09 UTC
@philcore: if it's 100, I assume you're listed as 101.
Noirin (2827 D)
04 Feb 09 UTC
@Chris: I have such a high rate only because I play small pot ppsc games. Do you remember "The 47 Society"? Reading the available chat between me and you should help you remember some of my horrible play.

Anyway, my point is just that percentages don't tell much. A professional chess player's winning percentage will be much higher against amateurs than against other pros, but his rating should be the same.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
04 Feb 09 UTC
Noirin, even if you were playing people of average rating, high win and draw rates are hard to come by. The mediocre opponents are why you weren't in the top 5
Chrispminis (916 D)
04 Feb 09 UTC
Haha, well just because we had some disagreeable press in that game can't argue with the empirical results. You still secured stronger footing than me in that game and that game was filled with some top players. Though to be honest, it was probably because I was still in WTA mentality when only PPSC was the option.

You're already penalized for playing weaker players in the Elo because you have to exceed much higher expectations to advance, and you continued to do so. I don't think I could ever have such low defeat percentage even if I only played inexperienced players.
TheGhostmaker (1545 D)
04 Feb 09 UTC
As for inflation, I haven't, within the accuracies, both have an average between 99 and 100.

What is true is that alot of top players had played relatively few games, and were still underrated in Jan09, and as their ratings are getting more accurate, and therefore higher, there seems to be inflation. Also, as the community size increases, the % that make the top 100 increases, and so the average scores of that top 100 will increase (as they are a thinner slice from the top)

TheGhostmaker (1545 D)

Edi is impossible to rate:

1. Relatively few games
2. Habit of accepting draws instead of wins
3. Taking over CD cannot be accounted for as there is no record of it.
