Opinion on different map colors
I'm interested to know what people think of these colors, which apparently more commonly used on real boards these days:

i vote keep it the way it is. it's easy on the eyes and we're all used to it.

It might be what boards now use, but I say keep with the historical accuracy and keep England pink. The British Empire was always red or pink on maps and making it blue is just, it's just not correct.

Also, the Western countries have more subdued, and similar, colors while the East is so bright and busy.

What's wrong with the colors now?
those are just too loud

I like these colors. They are the original colors and official colors of the countries in the American sets.
The colors that are used by Kestas come from the British Waddington's set which is without a doubt the ugliest set ever made of the game.
Why not allow people to choose their color scheme?
There could be an option in player's set ups that allows them to select the color scheme and map icons of their choice.

I think those were the original colours of the game. For some reason the UK board was different the US version. In Australia in the 1980s you used to be able to get both versions. I always thought the US version was much nicer.
But yeah, that looks pretty good. Especially the way there is more contrast between Germany and Austria.
My 2000 edition has little metal pieces and uses silver for Russia and gold for Turkey - its very nice (even though I have never played a single game with it).

Btw while I agree with Edi that the British version of the game is quite ugly, and even though you have used the same colours for phpdiplomacy, your map (the usual one - not the new one is not ugly).
For one thing the US version uses a physical map, which is fine for the board game; but for online, using a political map with different colours, depending on who controls what, makes sense.

Does this help with the color blind blind problem at all?

I'm going to speak out in favour. This will probably get some opposition because everyone is used to the old one but I think its better. Especially the fact that Russia is White, finally!

I like the original colours, but if it's too much trouble to change, then don't bother. I like the improvements in functionality that you have made this past year. Thank you for improving the game play.
I think the current colors are better. The other scheme is fine for a board (they match my own, which is the metal set like spyman's), but are too bright for the screen. They also make it harder to see the actual orders, which is pretty annoying.

I welcome any change of colour if people visual impairments who are members of this community agree can benefit from it.

If possible to choose, I personally would prefer less saturated colours than the ones in the example provided.

I think white for Russia is a bit too bright. What about a kind of silvery/grey colour like the 2000 edition of the boards game.
I am very unskilled at the sort of thing but I just had a mess around with Paint to try and show what I mean (this is very crude).

Hey, remember the colours here at phpDip used to be just as bright before the arrows were put in. People complained then that it looked too faded.

I think those new colours aren't bad. I wouldn't mind a change, but I'd like them to be paler so they're easier on the eyes. Also the colour of the support move arrow there is gross. Actually the order presentation there is all around bad.

So this is cool, what is this pd.7kill? Who's hosting it?

It is so loud. I liked this site because you could actually see the provinces you controlled change color like a real map. But these new colors seem so loud. And they really don't fit with the countries.

I mean, blue for Britain?
paulg (358 D)

Having played elsewhere, I'd vote for those colours. I would have thought that this would help the problem for colour blind players, although red-green colour blindness is the most common so I'm not sure how that would affect Austria and Italy. I wonder what background colour they use for the press.

is 7kilkl a chinsese subsidiary of phpdiplomacy?
as for the map, it looks good, nice and fresh. but im worried about how some countries might look if they got larger, a large green Italian empires, the many armies might not be that clear, same goes with a germany and her fleets on coastal lands.
sean (3490 D(B))

Really need to see the map in 7 different versions, one for each country being in a 14 plus control of the map to get the full impact of the colours.
Friendly Sword (636 D)

I concur with those in favour of the new colours.

Perhaps they are too 'loud' and need a bit of tweaking, but I like the colour scheme. A white Russia and no more Pink England... whoo

I also like the bigger distinction between Germany and Austria and obviously support any scheme that will make it easier for someone who is colourblind.

I don't think there are any valid reasons for not changing beyond the dislike of new and unfamiliar things.
figlesquidge (2131 D)

Well, I would like to vote for the current ones again.
Edi - Kestas has explained several times that for now it's not possible to let everyone have their own colour schemes. With the way maps are currently drawn this would take far too much from the server.
spyman (424 D(G))

I favour the new colour scheme, but with a bit of tweaking. The new colours are a bit harsh. But in principle I agree.
Pandarsenic (1485 D)
03 Dec 08 UTC
The new color scheme burns my eyes - but not because it's bad colors ('cept for England).

It's because those things are glaringly high-saturation.
thewonderllama (100 D)

I find the colors garish, personally. On a less subjective note, I had trouble making out the British fleets. That gray vs that blue gives me some trouble.

Those colours gave me seizures...
Churchill (2280 D)

The colours are too loud to fit the scheme on the site- not to mention that the current map matched my board to a tee.

When Turkey makes a support move, it is difficult to see the support line, which is Gold, over the background of the Turkish province, which is yellow.
cgwhite32 (1465 D)
03 Dec 08 UTC
Arggggggghhhhhhhh!!! My eyes actually hurt when I looked at the new map! Keep the existing one. There is a reason why the the British Empire "painted a quarter of the globe *pink*".

@Edi: "The colors that are used by Kestas come from the British Waddington's set which is without a doubt the ugliest set ever made of the game." I'd say the one being suggested is far uglier!
Wotan (1587 D)
03 Dec 08 UTC
I'm very much in favour of the old colours, they're gentler on the eyes. The new ones are much too bright and, as Stevelers and others have pointed out, there are some problems with reading the map in certain situations.

Retreat Phase Suggestion
I know this has been brought up before, but I don't remember if there was support or not so I'll bring it up again. If a unit is dislodged and has no retreat options can we please change the code so a forced disband is automatic? It's incredibly annoying to wait on somebody to order his forced disband.

Bug?
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6952

This seems pretty basic, but there's either a bug, or I don't understand the rules? Take a look at the Iberian peninsula. Shouldn't the English attack on Spain cut the support to Mid-Atlantic Ocean?

Games don't draw while paused?
http://phpdiplomacy.net/board.php?gameID=6969
The game got screwed up because of a failed attempt to pause (which later passed); we then voted to draw and were told the draw would come into effect in 5 minutes, but it hasn't happened and our best guess is that that the game can't be drawn while paused.

(a) that seems wrong. If we've voted to draw, then it should come into effect regardless of a pause. (b) can we get the game ended?

GFDT needs your help!
A player has had to drop out of the tournament in the early years of round 1. Is there any soul out there willing to take up his mantle and carry on the struggle for him?

Links to the games will be in the first post. If you're willing to take up these positions, drop me a line at [email protected] ASAP. It'd be a pity to play a tournament game with a CD.
