Bad luck on the world map...
Which countries is it unluckiest to be landed with playing gunboat on the World Diplomacy XI map? Surely some are especially awkward to deal with. I'm looking at you, Australia...

It seems that we have many experts on here, but I'd like to find out what we don't know. Post your topics to see if we can find something we all know nothing about. I'll start.

Christie linked to Fort Lee traffic
http://www.nytimes.com/2014/01/09/nyregion/christie-aide-tied-to-bridge-lane-closings.html?hp&_r=0

Officials from Chris Christie's office have reportedly been linked to lane closures earlier in September as a measure of political retribution against the mayor of Fort Lee, NJ.

Auburn gets crushed in the national championship game and people realize that the SEC just wasn't that good

Auburn might lose the title game (although I don't think they will be "crushed"), but that won't be because the SEC isn't good. The conference has already guaranteed at least an even bowl record, with more bowl games than any other conference, so it's not like it's only the best of the SEC playing a bunch of scrubs. The SEC already has the best out-of-conference regular season resume.

It's true, though, that the conference isn't as dominant as it has been the previous seasons. FSU would be a contender in the SEC this season, something you couldn't really say about most non-SEC national title contenders in the previous few years.
ckroberts (3548 D)
03 Jan 14 UTC
My mistake - the ACC has the most bowl teams, with 11, compared to the SEC's 10. It has also guaranteed a losing bowl game record.
steephie22 (182 D(S))

Talking about bowling eh?
ckroberts (3548 D)
04 Jan 14 UTC
Indeed!

Steephie, if I remember correctly, you are from one of the Low Countries, right? (Is Low Countries what they call themselves?) If so, is college football something people are interested in there? If I am misremembering your location, my apologies.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

@ckroberts,

ACC - 11 out of 14 teams. (78.6%) - 4-6 record so far with 1 game left
Pac-12 - 9 out of 12 teams. (75.0%) - 6-3 record
SEC - 10 out of 14 teams. (71.4%) - 6-2 record so far with 2 games left
Big 12 - 6 out of 10 teams. (60.0%) - 3-3 record
Big 10 - 7 out of 12 teams. (58.3%) - 2-5 record
SEC > Pac 12 > Big 12 > ACC > Big 10 this bowl season right now IMO, still too early to say for sure tho
ckroberts (3548 D)
04 Jan 14 UTC
Alderian, 7-2 with the Vandy win today. That's the most wins, although the SEC has more chances than everyone but the ACC. I'm not interested in going back and seeing who covered the line etc, but it would be cool if someone else did or had a source which did.
Alderian (2425 D(S))
04 Jan 14 UTC
Yeah, I saw Vandy was up 24-0 at halftime when I posted that.

I know the Pac-12 was also 6-3 against the spread due to the Pac-12 pickems I participate in on the cfn.scout.com forums on the Pac-12 board. But I don't know about other conferences.

I'm impressed with the big ten this year. Iowa should have never been that close to LSU. Minnesota let that one go against Syracuse if I remember correctly. Glad ohio state wasn't in the championship. But, this was an up year for the B10. We actually won the rose bowl!

Gunfighter06 (224 D)

I'm cheering for Auburn for the simple reason that they've have an extremely fun season. Their wins against Georgia and Alabama respectively will become legend. In the case of Georgia game, the moronic actions of TWO FBS collegiate defensive backs (going for an interception on fourth down instead of merely swatting the ball away) In the case of the Alabama game, the moronic action of the Alabama special teams coach, who failed to put a single fast man on the field goal squad. Anytime you try and kick a ball more than forty yards, have someone out there who's fast and can tackle.
Alderian (2425 D(S))

I saw someone intercept a deep ball on fourth down sometime this year. I don't remember what game it was but it made me wonder WTF the player was thinking.
Gunfighter06 (224 D)

If I had tried to intercept a fourth down pass in high school, I'd *still* be running sprints and bear-crawling up and down a hill.

You'd think players would think of that stuff *before* the play so that they know what to do.

You have to understand the NFL is a business. It's not just a sport anymore. Stats (An Interception for example for those who aren't familiar) equals how much the player will get signed for or resigned for. So when the company's (The NFL Teams) look at the players resume (Players Statistics In The League) they won't point out that one of the players interceptions was late in the fourth quarter. They will look at all the stats and the players condition, age, etc for whether they will sign them or resign them.
BusDespres (182 D)

As for Alabama, I love the fact they got "Roll Tided" I was sick of seeing them. Also no college team will ever be able to beat ANY NFL team. Not even the worst NFL team to ever play the game. They are two way different animals when it comes to speed strength and intelligence
President Eden (2750 D)

I'm not sure about that, Bus. I mostly agree, but given how many first-round picks were on that squad, I'll bet the 2001 Miami Hurricanes could give the 2008 Detroit Lions a game. I dunno that they'd win, but I bet it'd be competitive.

That's the absolute extreme though. 99% of matchups would be a laugh
Orka (785 D)
06 Jan 14 UTC
I have to ask this question.
Does anyone else hate the Alabama? Theyre good, Ill give them that, but I just dont like the bandwagoners that come with success. Half the people know Alabama due to how good theyve been, but in a few years when they arent good, those people will forget all about them.
BusDespres (182 D)
06 Jan 14 UTC
That's just how sports go though. A lot of New England Band Wagoners have now turned into a Seahawks fan or Broncos fan. You will always have those people who jump teams because they aren't true fans, they just like to win which is quite shameful if you ask me. I'm a Steelers fan and have been since I could walk. But I live in Michigan and will root for the lions (Who were such a disappointment) unless they play Pittsburgh. This doesn't mean I'm a bandwagoner, it simply means I am a Steelers fan who also roots for the the home state team.
President Eden (2750 D)

I do not like Alabama one bit. I even (mostly) subscribe to the idea that it's smart to pull for other teams in your conference during out-of-conference games to make you look better. But it's just too hard to pull for Alabama. Fuck 'em

I am new to this web based forum, but holy cow is there anything than people who don't move? I mean for crying out loud, you have 12 hours! to figure out what to do and, nope, can't be bothered! Yeah, it kind of wrecks the game for everyone else when the neighbor of the lamehead grows too strong too fast, but whatevs.

The People's Choice--Facebook's Top 5 Great Authors...by Likes--Thoughts?
At least from my searching for them on the pages with the most likes to their name...leaving aside the J.K. Rowlings, Stephenie Meyers, And Stephen Kings--Shakespeare (surprise!) ranks 1st with 6.8 million, Maya Angelou (surprise...?) is 2nd with over 4 million, Gabriel Garcia Marquez is 3rd with over 3 million, Fyodor Dostoyevsky ranks 4th with 1 million, and Jane "Life Begins at Man and Gossipy Bickering" has 900K. ...Thoughts on what that says about our popular choice in classic authors?

Player needed

Anon, 50 point buy-in, 2 day phases. This group has played several games with each other, but we need someone to fill in one spot. Post here if you're interested. This is a pretty good group, so the games have been pretty challenging (we haven't seen a solo yet). As long as you don't have any CDs, I'll PM the password to the first interested player.
